s**t! I thought as I pushed the door open. I recognised the name of the company on the file.
M . R. Acquisitions.
"M" as in Michael. "R" as in Ross.
Mick is short for Michael... s**t! I wasn't prepared for this. I wasn't prepared for round 2 with Samantha...
As I swung open the door, Mick's tall figure was standing by my desk.
He turned and gave his quirky smile. "Quite a view you have here" He said.
I smiled back,"It is yes." I don't know why but I sat abruptly in what should have been his seat. "Do you want to get started? Or shall we wait for your wife?" I asked as she wasn't in the room.
"Huh? Oh, Samantha, no that's ok." he said as he moved back round my desk and sat beside me on the other client chair in front of my desk.
He just looked at me for several moments as I clutched his company file. I could feel the heat rise through me and colour my face once again. I had never behaved like this with a client before.
His mouth opened and closed for a few moments before he started "Look, your father already knows this, so now you have our account, I should probably tell you too." His gaze never dropped from mine despite seeming to be unsure of himself. "My wife is my business partner, and these days, that's pretty much where things end." he paused. "We are still married, but, our marriage is not what it was meant to be or should be. We do not share a bed, we live seperate lives and we work together for the good of our company."
I looked up and met his eyes now. His voice was low and he spoke slowly but as though relaying facts and figures.
I only managed an "Oh.."
He continued, " I have to apologise again for her behaviour the other night. I am thrilled to have you on board.". His hand had reached over to me and it completely enveloped my own which rested on my knee. "I tell you this incase you think our behaviour is odd or that you should tiptoe around us. You don't need to, and if she is rude to you, you can tell me. It is a marriage of convenience and nothing more"
My shoulders relaxed a little at this. I wasn't sure if it was knowing he was kind and on my side, or knowing he didn't love her that did it. I'd have to consider that another time.
I stood abruptly and his hand fell. "Thank you for apologising on your wife's behalf Mr Ross, it isn't necessary though." I strode round my desk to sit on my chair. "Shall we continue with business?" I asked.
