Chapter 4: Watchtower Exploration, Hidden Runes, Approaching Danger

1120 Words
The morning breeze blew gently over Fort Glimmer, carrying the faint scent of grass and dispelling the last traces of night’s chill. Edmund and I walked side by side toward the watchtower, the manuscript tucked securely in my arm, our silver lockets glowing faintly against the morning sun, their light weaving together softly. The watchtower stood tall at the western edge of the fort, its stone walls weathered by time but still sturdy. It was far older than the rest of Fort Glimmer, with a cross emblem carved into its top—exactly as sketched in the manuscript. A pair of soldiers stood guard at the entrance, saluting respectfully as we approached. “Stay alert,” Edmund told the guards, his voice firm. “No one is allowed to approach without my order. We’re investigating clues here, and any disturbance could be fatal.” The guards nodded in unison. “Yes, Your Highness!” Edmund pushed open the tower’s wooden door, which creaked loudly, as if waking the centuries of secrets hidden within. The interior was dim, with only narrow arrow slits letting in streaks of sunlight. Dust danced in the light, and the air smelled of old stone and faint moss. We climbed the spiral stone staircase slowly, our footsteps echoing in the quiet tower. Each step felt heavy, as if we were treading on the memories of the founding monarch. The higher we climbed, the clearer the view of the surrounding landscape became—green fields stretching to the horizon, the distant river glinting like silver, and the faint outline of the Fawa Coalition’s camp in the distance. At the top of the tower, there was a small platform surrounded by stone railings. In the center stood an old stone table, its surface covered in dust and scratches, as if it had been untouched for decades. Edmund and I exchanged a glance, both feeling a surge of anticipation—this must be where the royal secret was hidden. I placed the manuscript on the stone table, and its silver glow brightened, casting light on the table’s surface. Edmund knelt down, carefully brushing away the dust with his sleeve, and faint carvings began to emerge—intricate runes, identical to those on the locket and the manuscript’s cover. “These are the royal runes,” Edmund said, his voice filled with awe. “My father told me they were created by the founding monarch to seal the secret. Only the light of the two lockets can activate them.” I sat down beside him, and we both held out our lockets. The silver glow from the lockets merged with the manuscript’s light, pouring onto the stone table. The runes began to glow, as if coming alive, and a low hum filled the air, as if the tower itself was awakening. The runes rearranged themselves, forming a short passage in archaic characters. Under the glow of the lockets, the characters were clear and readable. I leaned closer, reading them aloud softly: “When light unites, the door of time opens; when loyalty endures, the secret shall be revealed. The jade seal of the monarch holds the power to bridge worlds, hidden where the stars align.” “The jade seal?” Edmund frowned, confusion in his eyes. “I’ve never heard of a royal jade seal. My father never mentioned it. Where could it be hidden?” I thought for a moment, flipping through the manuscript’s pages. “Look here,” I said, pointing to a small note in the margin. “It says the jade seal was hidden by the founding monarch in a ‘chamber of stars,’ where the constellations are carved on the walls. He wrote that only those who understand the runes can find it.” Edmund’s eyes lit up. “The chamber of stars… There’s an underground chamber beneath the palace, where the walls are carved with constellations! My father used to take me there when I was a child, but he never let me go deep inside. That must be where the jade seal is!” Just as we felt a new glimmer of hope, a sudden shout came from below the tower: “Your Highness! Enemy scouts have been spotted nearby! They’re approaching the fort!” Edmund stood up instantly, his expression turning cold. “They’re here,” he said through gritted teeth. “The mysterious organization sent them to follow us, to steal the clues we’ve found.” I clutched the manuscript tightly, my heart racing. The enemy had found us faster than we expected—they must have been watching the fort closely, waiting for us to uncover the clues. “We need to leave now,” Edmund said, taking my hand. “We’ll go to the palace’s underground chamber to find the jade seal before they can stop us. The guards will hold them off, but we don’t have much time.” We hurried down the spiral staircase, our footsteps quick and urgent. When we reached the tower’s entrance, the guards were already preparing for battle, drawing their swords and watching the distant woods warily. A few enemy scouts could be seen in the distance, moving quietly toward the fort. “Hold them back as long as you can,” Edmund ordered the guards. “I’ll send reinforcements soon. Protect the fort with your lives.” “Yes, Your Highness!” the guards shouted, rushing toward the woods to intercept the scouts. Edmund pulled me toward the palace, his hand warm and firm. The morning breeze now felt cold, and the sound of swords clashing echoed in the distance. I knew that the danger was approaching fast, but I also knew that we had to find the jade seal—without it, we could not unlock the royal secret, and Aetherland would be in grave danger. As we ran through the fort’s streets, soldiers rushed past us, heading toward the western gate to join the fight. The people of the fort, hearing the commotion, closed their doors and windows, their faces filled with fear. But in their eyes, I also saw trust—in Edmund, in the soldiers, and in us. “We’ll find the jade seal,” Edmund said, glancing at me, his voice firm. “We’ll unlock the secret, stop the mysterious organization, and protect everyone here. I promise you.” I nodded, squeezing his hand tightly. The silver lockets around our necks glowed brighter, as if responding to his resolve. The underground chamber, the jade seal, the royal secret… all of these were within our reach, but so was the danger. We had no time to waste—our race against the mysterious organization had officially begun.
