“Why doesn’t everybody just stop for a second?” It was more a command than a question from Carlos. “It’s been a long day, we are all very tired. We can’t do anything right this very second so get a good night’s sleep and we shall tackle this in the morning.” It was a very sound suggestion, I was feeling particularly tired after my earlier ‘work out’ with Harrison. “Did you get through to him Cora?”
“Hmm?” I was distracted by my thoughts and didn’t catch what Carlos asked.
“Did you make contact with Alpha Harrison?” He said exasperated. It was one way of putting it but I kept it simple.
“Yes, he said he will be here in 3 days.”
“Good. Well not good but anyway...” Carlos went off into his own thoughts, coming up with each and every possible scenario that could happen.
“Try not to over think my dear. Whatever happens, happens.” Penny comforted. “It’s a good idea to all get some rest, be bright eyed and bushy tailed in the morning. Cora can show us around her old stomping ground.” I didn’t want to but one does not simply say no to Penny, not on a day where she has been pawed at, her husband insulted, her son groped and the very possibility of having a daughter in law was a dream of hers for as long as I’ve known her. Today was not a day to argue with her.
Lyam was a tad quiet and playing with his hands.
“Would you like me to check your room is clear of monsters before you go to bed?” I teased to him.
“Yes I would actually.” He replied jovially. I sighed and headed out the door, ushering his parents out first, giving Penny a kiss on the cheek goodnight and Carlos walked past stuck in his thoughts.
As me and Lyam walked the 15 steps back to his room I noticed he perked up and was sniffing at the air.
“It still lingers...” He hummed. I desperately wanted to ridicule him out of love of course, but we all deserved a love that made us delirious. As we got closer to his door the smell of the Omegas was thick, it got caught around me like a bad fog and I wondered what would make their aroma this dense.
“Can you smell that?” I asked whilst holding my nose.
“No, what?” He looked puzzled as I struggled to open his door against the barrage of scents battling against me. My answer came from the other side of the door where I was greeted by the 3 presents, and they had brought friends this time. Of the male variety, they must have brought them just in case.
“Who the f**k are you?” Screeched one of them as I quickly slammed the door and held it closed.
“You can sleep on my floor tonight if you want. I would not recommend going in there.” Lyam looked between me and the door which was being rattled and banged against my shoulder.
“Good idea.” He agreed with me and almost ran back to my room, bolting it shut before opening it to pop his head out. “Sorry. I really don’t want them near me.” I chuckled and thought to myself how strange it was to see him act like this. I had always knew him to be a confident, capable man. I’d known him all his life, I was there first person his mother told when she was pregnant, and I was there at his birth. I never said anything to Carlos as he was out on a trading visit when she discovered her news and Penny just could not keep it secret for long.
“One second please, I intend to have a little practical joke with our friends here.” I gave a wicked smile, that normally meant trouble and Lyam shut the door and bolted it again. I took a second and released my hold on the door, to see it swing open and the female on the other side collapse onto her arse and I saw more of her than I ever wanted to.
“What was that for you b***h?” She spat
“Woah. No need for name calling.”
“Where is he? The yummy handsome young one?” Another questioned.
“Who?” I pleaded ignorance.
“The one whose room this is. We’ve been sent to give him a welcome party.” Toyed the third female.
“I don’t know who you mean.” I crossed my arms.
“The Betas son you cocky, son of a bitch.” The floor female had got up by this point but she had an attitude I had a distaste for.
“Oh him...” This was going to be fun. “Yes I saw him go downstairs, said something about needing a drink to work up the courage. An Omega told him about a secret store, bottom floor, down the hallway, second door on the left, then first door on the right. The door sticks so wiggle it a bit.”
“That’s all we needed.” She sneered and snapped her fingers, the other 5 followed her out the room and downstairs.
I merrily skipped back to my room and rapped on the door, I heard the bolt slide and the door peak open for Lyam to see it was me.
“What did you do?”
I pushed past him into my own room and sat down by the fireplace. For all the shortcomings every room in the manor house had a working fireplace, they were kept lit by a little band of devillish imps who would gladly take the joy of burning your fingertips if you got too close.
“I thought they might like a refreshing swim.” I sighed as I relaxed back into the chair. It smelled musty, and the fabric was tearing away in the corners.
“What are you talking about?” Lyam was dubious to ask, but he rebolted the door and joined me on the other chair. He looked at it for a second, poked it, and decided to sit on the floor instead. “Where did they go Cora?”
“First floor, down the hallway, second door on the left, first door on the right.” I repeated my instructions from earlier.
“And where does that take you?”
I leant forward real close. “If you listen really carefully you might just hear them.” I stopped and pointed to the sky for effect. “The door sticks so you can always hear the scrape of the metal on the stone floor.” Lyam turned his head this way and that before he located the sound. He was about to speak when I held a finger to my lips to tell him ssh. 2 seconds later you heard the splat and the groans. I clapped my hands together and wiggled my legs in delight. “Absolutely perfect.” I sighed in victory.
“I feel I kind of don’t want to ask this but, what did you do?” Lyam tried to look stern but a smile at the corner of his mouth gave away his enjoyment for the answer.
“Did you know the Shadow Bane have livestock and a farmland? They grow vegetables and such like, but they also house cows and pigs for milk, meat and manure.”
“Okay...” Lyam was completely confused.
“But manure has to go through a process to be used as fertiliser. It has to be heated to a set temperature. There are heated tunnels that run from the livestock yards, under the manor house and over to the farmlands. Alpha Thomas designed it that way so the heat from the tunnels could be used to warm the manor house as well.”
“That sounds quite smart.”
“It was. Of course these heated tunnels needed access points so engineers could check in on them and do safety checks. There were walkways and hatches so they could check the flow, heat, bacteria levels and all that stuff.” I grinned like a schoolgirl. “When the fire happened, the structurally integrity of the walkways was compromised and I recall hearing someone complaining that part of it collapsed into one of the tunnel hatches, leaving it permanently open and if anyone where to walk down there they would fall straight into it.”
“Do you mean...” Lyam had twigged.
“That door led to the broken walkway so they’ve taken a little swim.”
“I think you mean they are up s**t creek without a paddle!” Lyam fell over laughing. “Oh Cora, I really don’t ever want to piss you off.”
“Smart thinking. Your mother definitely didn’t raise a fool. You do right by Alicia and you’ll have no issues with me.” It was said with jest, but there was intent.
“I’m going to sleep well tonight, even in this abysmal place!” He lent back and rested his head on his arms.
“Here.” I headed to the bed and threw him some pillows and the top blanket. “ The fire won’t ever go out so at least you’ll be warm.”
“This reminds me of the sleepovers we used to have when I was little.” He hummed as he set himself up for the night.
“No midnight snacks this time.” I joked before curling myself up in bed. I didn’t hear a reply just the gentle sound of him snoring already. “Sleep well Lyam, it’s a big day tomorrow.”
