A few breathless minutes later and I was laying by his side resting on his shoulder inside the comfort of his embrace. He planted a soft kiss on my forehead.
“I’ve really missed you, my love.” His words meant everything me, but I couldn’t help but feel wrong and he sensed it. “You are all that matters to me. I would tell the world about you in a second if that’s what you wanted. I’d make you, my Luna.” And I did but without a mating bond he would be discredited, become an outcast.
“You would lose Twin Falls for me though.” I muttered into his chest.
“For you Cora...” He lifted my face to meet his. “I would rescind my title; Carlos would make a fine Alpha, I’m sure. I would be prepared if I had you.” It was romantic but it wasn’t a sacrifice I was willing for him to make, considering I was hiding a secret from him. “Besides, I need you to show me how you do that trick of pulling people through the link. You’re getting better at it.” He added with a grin.
“Shut up!” I playfully slapped his chest as he grabbed my hand and held it close to his heart.
“You are a marvel of secrets my love.” If only he knew. We only had a brief time together before he eventually had to go back. “Send me back intact alright?” He gave a jovial shrug, only a handful knew about my powers, and I was still learning to control them. He stood in the middle of the room, brushed himself down and swept his hair back. I focused my mind and with a mental strain I pushed him back through to his office and the last I saw of him was a charming smile and the words ‘3 days.’ Not but 2 seconds later came an anxious, frantic, beating on my door and a rather stressed voice calling out.
“Cora! Open the damn door!”
“In what back alley where you raised in to came barging on someone’s door like that?!” I yelled to the door as I threw on a jumper and tracksuit bottoms.
“Cora! Let me in now. Please...” Lyam begged on the other side, I yanked the door open and dragged him into my room. His face was pale, and gaunt like he had seen a ghost. “I’m sorry Cora. Really. I just couldn’t go to my parents.” He collapsed to the floor. I simply walked around him.
“What happened?” I poured myself a glass of water and handed Lyam one as well, his hand reach up shakily to take it.
“I went to my room, to get away from Mum and Dad. They’re going ballistic about my mate being one of Marc’s ‘ladies’.”
“I got the feeling that it wasn’t something she really wants to be.”
“And I want to take her away from this place, but I don’t even know her name. I don’t want to ruin any chance we have of securing passage through these lands. I don’t know what I’m feeling, my mouth is dry, my hands are wet. And the air, it’s so thick with-with---” He rattled on and stopped, trying to think of the right words.
“Let me guess… it smells like freshly baked brownies?”
He looked at me in awe. “Can you smell it too?”
“No Lyam.” I shook my head. “When you were little, it was the best way of getting you back home. Your Mum would bake some brownies as they were your favourite.” I nudged his arm hoping he would realise, his blank face staring back at me meant I had to spell it out. “We just had this discussion. Your mate’s aroma will be your favourite smell.” He mouthed a knowing ‘oh.’
“I don’t know what to do Cora…” Here was one of the packs most prospective warriors, reduced to a mess sat on my bedroom floor.
“First thing is we need to find her. She should feel the bond too.” I put my cup down and was working out a plan of action in my head, pacing around the room.
“It may be too late already.”
“What do you mean?”
“Earlier when I went to my room….” He stopped and I ushered him on. “There was Marc’s ‘present’, three of them in fact. Naked. On the bed.” He stared at a hole in the floor. “They came up to me and started pulling at my clothes, dragging me towards the bed. I tried to fight them off but before I knew it there was one on top of me and the door opened---” He trailed off.
“She had come to find you.” I guessed. He sniffled and nodded slightly.
“She must hate me; she ran out the room. I swear I saw her crying. I bolted out of there and tried to see where she went but the others came after me, so I came running to you.”
“That was smart.”
“No need to be sarcastic Cora.” He snapped. This bond had a hold of him it seems.
“I wasn’t. It was smart. It stopped those ladies coming after you. We will fix it, somehow.” I stroked his back in hopes of comforting him.
“I was terrified Cora. Mortified. Seeing those ladies-naked-I froze.”
“Anyone would, it’s a shock to the system to walk in and see that!”
“I’ve never seen them in real life…”
“Seen what?”
“You know…” He shrugged. “Breasts.” He almost whispered it as if a secret and I burst out laughing.
“You? You’ve never seen breast before? How on earth have you ever had s*x?” I joked before realising his silence. “You’ve never had sex.”
“No. It may sound silly but I’m one of those ‘wait for your mate’. It’s not like I haven’t done anything or had the offers but it never felt right.”
“I understand. I wish I could say the same.” I truly did. “I waited, and then I thought I met my mate but turns out it was just a snake in wolves clothing.”
“But it’s different for you now though.”
“What do you mean?”
“You have Alpha Harrison.”
I was speechless. “I don’t have Harrison.”
“Very convincing.” Lyam smiled for the first time since collapsing into my room. “Your secret is safe with me, well me, Mum and Dad. We all know, it’s so easy to see you two belong together. It’s for ones like you that I think the bond is an antiquated rule.”
There was no point trying to deny it. “Thank you Lyam, truly. It means a lot.”
“I think most of the pack would be happy if it was announced, no-one would refuse it.”
“The Guild would. Harrison would lose too much to have me…” Plus he would hate me for the rest of his life if the truth ever came out. “Let’s focus on a couple we can get together.” I stood triumphantly. “We will go find you mysterious mate, explain the situation and you two can live happily ever after and name your first-born daughter after me.” I added with a grin.
“Ha ha. I like the sound of that.” Lyam stood and brushed himself down. “But where do we begin? There can’t be many places for a charming pixie like her with hazelnut hair and emerald eyes to hide…” He lulled over her in his mind, but I had a recollection. A long, lost, memory of brunette hair and green eyes.
“Lyam. I think I know who she is…”
