Chapter Two: Growing Closer

491 Words
The library was quiet that morning. Dust floated in the shafts of sunlight that slipped through the tall windows. Elara moved along the rows of shelves, carefully sliding books back into place. She loved the silence here—it was her safe place, away from the noise of the city and the heaviness of the world. “Elara?” Her head turned quickly. She wasn’t expecting anyone to say her name. And there he was. Ethan. He stood a few steps away, holding a worn paperback in his hand, his smile soft but steady. “You again,” Elara said, her voice small but touched with surprise. “Is it a bad thing?” he asked, raising an eyebrow playfully. She shook her head too quickly. “N-no, of course not.” Ethan held up the book. “I was hoping you could help me. I finished this one, but I don’t know what to read next.” Elara took it from his hands, her fingers brushing his. She felt a small spark—so small she almost convinced herself she imagined it. “You liked this?” she asked . “Very much,” he said. “It felt… real.” She nodded, scanning the shelves before pulling another book free. She held it out. “Try this one. It’s slower, but the story stays with you.” Ethan studied the book, then her face. “I’ll take your word for it.” For a moment, their eyes lingered, longer than polite. Elara quickly turned away, pretending to fix the shelves again. That evening, Elara sat across from Noah at their favorite café. The place buzzed with quiet chatter and the smell of roasted coffee beans. Noah stirred his drink lazily, his sharp eyes fixed on her. “You’re glowing,” he said suddenly. Elara blinked. “I am not.” “Yes, you are,” he said with a smirk. “Spill it. Who’s the man?” She fidgeted with the edge of her sleeve. “It’s nothing like that. Just… someone came by the library today.” “A-ha,” Noah said, leaning closer like a detective closing in on the truth. “And did this ‘someone’ happen to have a handsome face and a mysterious aura?” Elara’s lips curved into a reluctant smile. “Maybe.” Noah gasped, clutching his chest dramatically. “Finally! After years of boring books, my best friend has a crush. The world is healing.” Elara laughed, covering her face with her hands. “You’re ridiculous.” “Ridiculously right,” Noah said, pointing his straw at her. “Don’t fight me on this. I want details next time.” That night, lying in bed, Elara replayed the moment at the library in her head. The way his fingers brushed hers. The way his eyes stayed on her. And though she told herself it was nothing, she couldn’t stop smiling.
