Chapter Seven: Shadows Return

445 Words
The days after that night felt different. For Elara, everything seemed brighter. The way Ethan greeted her in the morning, the way his hand lingered at her back, the way his eyes softened whenever they looked at her—it was no longer hidden. It was love, and it was theirs. Even Noah noticed the glow in her. “Oh, honey,” he said one evening, fanning himself dramatically. “You’ve got the look. The ‘someone kissed me in the rain’ look.” Elara blushed and tried to hide behind her book, but she couldn’t deny it. She was happy. Maybe the happiest she had ever been. But happiness doesn’t always last untouched. It began with a voice from Ethan’s past. One evening, as Elara waited for him outside the café, she saw a woman standing by his car. Tall, poised, and familiar in the way strangers sometimes feel. Ethan’s smile faltered when he spotted her. “Mira?” he said quietly. Her lips curved into a smile that didn’t reach her eyes. “It’s been a while, Ethan.” Elara froze a few steps away, her heart tightening. The name sounded like a forgotten echo—but the way Ethan said it, soft and uncertain, made her stomach twist. Mira’s eyes flicked briefly to Elara, then back to Ethan. “We need to talk.” That night, Ethan explained only a little. “She’s… my best friend,” he said hesitantly as they sat together on Elara’s couch. “We grew up together. We’ve been through a lot.” His voice grew quiet. “She’s… important to me. But not the way you are.” Elara tried to believe him, to let the warmth of his hand in hers reassure her. But Mira’s face lingered in her mind. Because the way Mira had looked at Ethan wasn’t the way friends looked at each other. The days that followed carried a weight Elara couldn’t shake. Mira began appearing more often—sometimes waiting for Ethan after work, sometimes dropping by the café, sometimes walking with him as though she belonged at his side. Noah whispered to Elara one afternoon, “That girl’s dangerous. I can smell it. Don’t trust her.” Liam, quieter but no less observant, added gently, “Be careful, Elara. Some people don’t let go of what they want.” Elara tried to smile, tried to hold onto the joy she had found with Ethan. But in the corners of her heart, doubt began to bloom. And though Ethan assured her, over and over, that she was the one he loved—Mira’s shadow was already creeping into their story.
