Shadows on the Horizon

I did not sleep much that night. The garden conversation with Kael replayed in my mind like a song I could not stop humming. His voice promising equality. His eyes softening when he spoke of hope. The warmth of the golden thread when he swore on the moon. I lay under the heavy furs, staring at the ceiling beams, turning every word over and over. Part of me wanted to believe him. Wanted to believe that someone could see me as more than an omega. More than weak. More than disposable. The thought felt dangerous. Like reaching for fire after being burned. Another part screamed to run. Damon’s voice echoed in my head. "You are nothing. Unworthy." The laughter from the pack. The way they dragged me away like trash. If Kael ever changed his mind, if he ever looked at me the way Damon did, the pain would be worse. Because I would have chosen it. I would have let myself hope. I rolled onto my side, curled tight. What if this was just another trap? What if the golden thread was a lie? What if I stayed and became nothing more than a pretty ornament in a king’s fortress? A queen in name only, still small, still invisible when it mattered? My chest ached. Not just from the broken bond. From the war inside me. Hope versus fear. Trust versus survival. I pressed my palm to my sternum. The golden thread pulsed softly. Steady. Patient. It did not demand. It simply existed. And that scared me more than anything. Because if it was real, then choosing to leave would hurt too. By the time dawn light crept through the curtains, my body was tired but my thoughts were wide awake. I rose, dressed in the green tunic and leggings again. They felt familiar now, like armor I was learning to wear. I braided my hair loosely, red strands slipping through my fingers, and stepped out into the corridor. The guards were there, as always. “Good morning, Lady Aria,” one said. I offered a small smile. “Good morning. I would like to walk the grounds again. Alone, if possible.” They exchanged a glance. “The king said you have freedom,” the other replied. “We will stay at a distance unless needed.” “Thank you.” I walked without direction at first. Past the training yard where warriors already sparred in the early light. Past the fountain where children played, their laughter bright against the stone. I found myself drawn to the outer wall, to a narrow set of stairs that led up to a lookout platform. The view stole my breath. The valley spread below like a painting. River glinting silver. Forests rolling dark and deep. Mountains rising sharp against the pale sky. In the distance, smoke curled from small villages. Kael’s territory was vast. Wild. Beautiful. And mine to choose. I leaned against the stone railing. The wind tugged at my braid. Footsteps sounded behind me. I turned. A young woman approached. Early twenties. Short dark hair, sharp green eyes, a scar across her left eyebrow. She wore warrior leathers and carried a short blade at her hip. “You are Aria,” she said. Not a question. “Yes.” She stopped a respectful distance away. “I am Sienna. Captain of the eastern patrol. The king asked me to speak with you if you came up here.” I raised an eyebrow. “He is everywhere, isn’t he?” Sienna laughed. Short. Warm. “He sees everything. Especially when it matters.” She joined me at the railing. We stood in silence for a moment, watching the valley. “You are thinking about staying,” she said quietly. I glanced at her. “How do you know?” “Because you are looking at the land like it could be yours.” I exhaled slowly. “I do not know what I am looking at yet.” Sienna nodded. “That is fair. Most who come here are running from something. You are running from rejection. From a pack that never saw you. From a mate who threw you away.” Her words stung. Not cruel. Just true. “But this place,” she continued, “does not throw people away. The king does not allow it. If you stay, you will be tested. Trained. Questioned. But you will never be invisible again.” I looked at her. “And if I am not strong enough?” “Then you become strong enough,” she said simply. “We all did.” I turned back to the view. A hawk circled high above the river. Sienna spoke again. “There is something else you should know.” I looked at her. “Word has reached us from the south. From Crescent Pack.” My stomach tightened. “Damon Blackwood has sent scouts to our borders. Small groups. Watching. Waiting.” I gripped the railing. “For me.” “For you,” she confirmed. “He claims you were stolen. That the Lycan King took you against your will.” Anger flared hot in my chest. “He rejected me. Publicly. In front of the entire pack.” Sienna’s eyes darkened. “We know. The scouts we captured told us everything. Damon is spinning a different story now. Saying you were manipulated. That you are still his mate.” I laughed. Bitter. Short. “He wants me back because he lost something he thought he owned.” Sienna watched me. “The king will not let him take you. Not without a fight.” I looked out over the valley again. The hawk dove. Fast. Silent. Deadly. “I do not want to be the reason for a war,” I said quietly. “You are not the reason,” Sienna replied. “Damon is. He made his choice when he rejected you. Now he regrets it. That is his burden. Not yours.” I exhaled. The wind carried her words away. Sienna placed a hand lightly on my shoulder. Brief. Steady. “You are not alone here,” she said. “Whatever you decide.” She stepped back. “If you want to train later, come to the eastern yard. I will be there.” She left as quietly as she came. I stayed on the platform for a long time. The sun climbed higher. The valley woke fully. And in my chest, the golden thread pulsed. Not louder. Just clearer. I turned back toward the fortress. I had decisions to make. But first, I needed to see Kael again. Not to give him an answer. Not yet. But to tell him what I had heard. And to ask what he planned to do about the scouts at his border. I walked back down the stairs. The guards fell in beside me without a word. And for the first time, I did not feel followed. I felt accompanied.
