Chapter 5: The Girl Everyone Hunts

2473 Words
The Mistveil Wilderness did not forgive mistakes. Shadows stretched like clawed hands across the moss-covered stone, and the wind through the dead pine trees sounded like a dying breath. Lyra collapsed against the mossy base of an ancient cedar, her breath coming in ragged, painful gasps. Her hands were caked in dried mud and her own blood, her thin leather boots torn open at the toes. She pulled her knees up to her chest, her body trembling uncontrollably as the freezing night air bit through her thin, torn dress. "Just... just keep breathing," Lyra choked out, her voice barely a whisper in the vast, terrifying silence of the forest. She pressed her palms against her eyes, but the moment she closed them, the image of Ashwood burning exploded in her mind. "Joan... Toby... Thomas..." A sob tore through her throat, raw and suffocating. She reached into her pocket, her dirt-caked fingers wrapping tightly around the cool silver pendant Thomas had given her. "Why? Why did those bandits do it? Was it gold? Was it food? Why kill everyone?!" she wept, looking up at the oppressive canopy above. She squeezed her eyes shut, her knuckles white around the pendant. In her heart, the terror was slowly turning into a bitter, hollow ache. She believed with every fiber of her being that a ruthless band of rogue raiders or mountain bandits had descended upon her home to plunder it, completely unaware that the highest rulers of the continent had signed her death warrant. A sudden rustle in the thick underbrush twenty yards away made her freeze. Lyra’s breath hitched. She instinctively shrank deeper into the hollow of the cedar tree, her heart slamming against her ribs like a trapped bird. She grabbed a sharp, jagged stone from the dirt, holding it close to her chest with shaking hands. "Who's there?" she called out, trying to sound strong, but her voice cracked with helpless fear. "Stay back! I... I have a weapon!" Out from the fog stepped a low-tier forest scavenger—a half starved mangy wolf creature with yellow wild eyes. It wasn't a shifter... it was just a feral beast driven mad by hunger, smelling the fresh blood on her scraped knees. It low-growled, its lips curling back to reveal yellowed fangs dripping with saliva. "Please..." Lyra whispered. A tears streaming down her soot-stained cheeks as she pressed her back flat against the rough bark. "Please, no... I don't want to die here. Not like this. Not in the dark." The beast snarled and lunged forward, its jaw snapping inches from her legs. Lyra screamed, throwing her hands up defensively. The silver pendant swung wildly from her hand, catching the faint moonlight filter through the clouds. A sudden, blinding burst of soft silver light erupted from her hands, washing over the feral beast like a wave of cool water. The creature halted mid-air, tumbling into the dirt at her feet. It didn't howl in pain. Instead, its wild, aggressive yellow eyes softened, the frantic, diseased tension draining entirely from its muscles. It whimpered softly, stayed on its knees, and then slowly backed away into the shadows, vanishing into the fog as if pacified by an unseen deity. Lyra stared at her trembling hands, her chest heaving. The silver light faded back beneath her skin, leaving behind a cold, numbing sensation. "What is happening to me?" she sobbed, burying her face in her knees as the overwhelming loneliness pressed down on her soul. "Thomas... what did you give me? What am I supposed to do now?" She had no map, no food, and no warm clothes. All she had was her knowledge of wild herbs, a mysterious silver pendant, and a target painted invisibly onto her back. Back in the smoldering graveyard that used to be Ashwood, the ash was cold. Kael Draven stood in the center of what remained of the town square. His black cloak was dusted with grey soot, his jaw locked so tight his facial muscles throbbed. Around him, his elite warriors stood silent, afraid to move, afraid to even breathe. The aura of raw, suffocating dominance rolling off their Alpha King was enough to make their instincts scream for them to bow to the dirt. "Report," Kael growled. The word was low, devoid of heat, yet deadlier than a drawn blade. Vance stepped forward, bowing his head deeply as he handed Kael a charred, bent piece of metal recovered from the doorway of the bakery. "We searched the perimeter, Alpha. We found these near the bodies of the elders. They weren't mountain bandits. And they weren't rogues." Kael took the piece of metal. His silver eyes narrowed as he traced the intricate, brutal crest forged onto its surface. It was a sun eclipsed by a blood-red blade. "The Obsidian Vanguard," Kael said, his voice dropping into a chilling register. "The Grand Elder's personal, unsanctioned death squad. The shadow guards who answer only to the Council Citadel." "Why would the Council send them here behind your back, Alpha?" Vance asked, his voice laced with genuine disbelief and growing outrage. "Ashwood is under the jurisdiction of the Nightshade Pack! Sending an execution squad into your territory without your consent is an explicit declaration of disrespect—if not treason against the treaty!" "It isn't just disrespect, Vance," Kael said, crushing the piece of charred metal in his gloved fist until it bent like soft tin. He tossed it into the ashes at his feet. "It is panic." Kael walked slowly toward the collapsed structure of the healer’s cottage. He stepped over a burnt wooden beam, his eyes scanning the floorboards until he reached the heavy crate that had been dragged over the hidden trapdoor. He kicked the crate aside with a single, effortless motion, revealing the splintered wood beneath. He knelt down, sweeping his gloved fingers over the edge of the trapdoor. "There was an old man here," Kael murmured, his sharp eyes picking up the microscopic details in the crime scene. "He held the door shut from the top. He bought her time." "To execute a single human girl... they slaughtered sixty innocent villagers," Vance said, looking around at the blackened landscape with a heavy heart. "Farmers. Children. Women who had never picked up a sword in their lives. Why? What could one human girl possibly do to warrant the total extinction of a peaceful settlement?" Kael stood up, turning to face his commander. His silver eyes flashed with an ominous, cold intellect. "Because she isn't just a human, Vance. The Elder told us she was a 'threat to the stability of the packs.' He told us her death was a mercy to prevent a war." "And you don't believe that anymore, Alpha?" "Look around you!" Kael snapped, his voice ringing out across the dead valley like a thunderclap. "Does this look like a controlled execution to preserve peace? This is an erasure! The Council didn't want a threat eliminated... they wanted a secret buried! They were terrified she would speak to me before I drove my blade through her heart!" Vance gasped, taking a small step back. "You think... the Grand Elder manipulated you?" "He used the Nightshade Pack as a shield," Kael hissed, his inner wolf thrashing against his chest, demanding vengeance for the insult, demanding the capture of the girl. "He assigned me to lead the hunt to keep my eyes on the borders, while he sent his butcher squad to incinerate the evidence. He knew if I met her first, if I questioned her... I would find out whatever truth they are desperately trying to hide." "What are your orders, King Kael?" Vance asked, his hand going to his chest in a formal salute. "If the Council has betrayed us—" "We do not march on the Citadel yet," Kael interrupted, his voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper. "Not until I have the truth in my hands." He looked toward the dark ridge of the mountains where the girl's faint footprints led into the untamed wild. "Find her before the Vanguard does," Kael ordered, his dark cloak billowing as he turned toward the tree line. "If the Council wants her dead so badly, then her survival is the only leverage we have to tear down their lies." High above the continent, in the grand gilded hall of the Alpha Citadel, the mood was far from victorious. The seven Alpha Kings sat around the towering obsidian table, but the atmosphere was fractured, thick with paranoia and quiet rage. At the head of the room, Grand Elder Varukan stood before an ancient bronze basin filled with bubbling, black water. "She escaped?!" Silas, the Alpha of the Northern Crags, slammed his fists onto the table, shattering the marble inlay. "You assured us your Vanguard was absolute! You burned the entire village to the ground, and you let a twenty-four-year-old human girl slip through your fingers?!" "Calm yourself, Silas!" Varukan barked, though a bead of cold sweat rolled down his withered temple. "The village is ashes! Her supporters are dead! She has no food, no weapons, and nowhere to run! She is trapped in the Mistveil Wilderness!" "She is in Kael's territory!" Alpha Joshua pointed out, his brow furrowed with deep concern. "And Kael is not a fool, Varukan! He found the crests of your Vanguard in the ruins. He knows you operated behind his back. Do you have any idea what happens if Kael Draven finds that girl before we do?" "He will execute her as ordered," Varukan insisted, though his voice lacked conviction. "He won't!" Silas spat, leaning forward with his golden eyes glowing dangerously. "Kael is proud. He obeys the laws, but he does not tolerate being used as a decoy! If he realizes the girl holds the key to the Moon Successor's bloodline, he will use her against us! He will use her to claim the supreme throne for the Nightshade Pack!" "Then we make sure she never reaches his hands," Varukan said. A terrifying, desperate sneer twisting his wrinkled face. He stepped up to the central altar and unrolled a massive parchment scroll stamped with the golden seal of the High Council. "If one pack cannot find her, the entire continent will." "What are you doing?" Joshua asked, his eyes widening. "You can't mean—" "I am issuing an open decree," Varukan announced, his voice echoing through the massive stone chamber like a curse. "A worldwide bounty." He raised his hands, and a massive projection of light erupted from the magic circle on the floor, beaming out across the magical communication towers scattered across every realm, every territory, and every dark alley of the continent. "Listen to me, leaders of the Great Packs! Clans of the Rogue Wastes! Mercenaries of the Obsidian Sanctum!" Varukan's voice boomed through the projection, reaching millions of ears at once. "The High Council issues a supreme mandate! The human female known as Lyra Ashbourne is declared an enemy of the realm!" Across the continent, in crowded taverns, dark guild halls, and frozen war camps, millions of shifters and hunters stopped in their tracks, listening to the echoing proclamation. "To whoever brings her to the Citadel," Varukan declared, his eyes burning with mad desperation, "alive or in chains... the High Council guarantees ten thousand bars of pure gold, full immunity from all past crimes, and a guaranteed lordship over the border territories!" In a shadowy tavern in the dark markets, a hulking mercenary lowered his ale, a wicked grin spreading across his scarred face. "Ten thousand bars of gold? For a human girl?" In the depths of the Obsidian Sanctum, Cassian Noctis adjusted the straps of his silver blade, his black eyes flashing in the darkness as he heard the decree echo off the stone walls. "The price has risen. But the target remains the same." In the Crimson Wastes, Darius Voss stood atop a rocky outcropping, listening to the proclamation echoing through the sky. He let out a dark, amused laugh, drawing his meteoric iron dagger. "You're getting desperate, old man. You just turned the whole world into a pack of starving hounds." Back in the Citadel, Silas looked at Varukan with a mixture of awe and horror. "You just put a target on her back that every monster from here to the southern seas will kill for. She won't survive three days!" "She was never meant to survive," Varukan said, a dark, cold smile settling on his face as he looked at the black basin. "Let them hunt. Let the rogues, the mercenaries, and the Alphas tear each other apart for her. As long as Lyra Ashbourne dies before the Blood Eclipse, the power remains ours." The rain began to fall over the Mistveil Wilderness, heavy, cold, and relentless. Miles away from any civilization, Lyra stumbled through the thick mud of a steep ravine, her breath coming in ragged gasps. She clutched her torn shawl around her soaked body, her fingers numb, her vision blurred with exhaustion and unshed tears. She stopped by a small, rushing stream to wash the dirt from her burning face. As she bent over the water, she caught her reflection in the dark, rippling surface. She looked tiny. Fragile. A broken girl shivering in the dark. Suddenly, the air around her felt heavy. Far off in the distance, beyond the mountains, a low, collective howl echoed through the sky—not from one wolf, but from hundreds, scattered across different corners of the land. A chorus of predators, all turning their heads toward the same mountain range. Lyra gasped, scrambling backward into the wet mud, her heart pounding against her ribs like a sledgehammer. She looked around at the towering, dark trees closing in on her from all sides. She didn't know about the Grand Council's decree. She didn't know about the ten thousand bars of gold. She didn't know that kings, assassins, and monsters were currently tearing through the continent to track her down. All she knew was that the forest had suddenly become very loud, and the silence of the night was filled with the sound of a thousand footsteps marching toward her hiding place. Lyra clutched the silver pendant to her chest, her voice breaking as she whispered into the pouring rain. "Please... somebody help me..." And deep in the darkness of the woods, the hunt for the Moon Successor had officially begun.
