Chapter 6: The Silver Executioner

2311 Words
The storm over the Mistveil Mountains did not slow Cassian Noctis down... it fed him. Rain washed over his black iron armor, pouring off the sharp edges in steady streams, but his footfalls remained completely silent against the sodden earth. He didn't breathe hard. He didn't shiver. He moved like a ghost forged of steel and cold shadow. Before him, three spectral figures bounded through the dense, foggy timber. They were not living beasts, but silver-manifested wolves—summoned through ancient Lycan blood rites. Their glowing, ethereal bodies cut through the dark, their glowing noses pressed close to the wet mud, tracking a scent that no living creature could mask. "Find her," Cassian whispered, his voice a flat, dead rasp behind his iron mask. The lead silver wolf paused near a crushed fern, lifting its glowing head toward a steep, muddy incline that led higher into the jagged cliffs. It let out a soundless howl, its form flickering like a dying candle flame before pointing directly up the ravine. "Good," Cassian murmured, stepping over a fallen pine log with frightening ease. Behind him in the gloom, two human bounty hunters... mercenaries who had tried to follow his trail after hearing the High Council’s worldwide bounty lay motionless in the mud, their throats sliced open with clean, mathematical precision. They had tried to bargain with him. They had offered to split the ten thousand bars of gold. Cassian had not answered them with words. He had answered with six inches of silver steel. "Money is for the living," Cassian muttered to the howling wind, his hand resting lightly on the hilt of his massive silver blade. "A contract is for the dead." He paused, touching the side of a massive cedar trunk. His leather gloved fingers felt a microscopic smudge of fresh, drying mud left by a small hand. He brought his glove to his mask, catching the faint, undeniable scent lingering on the bark. Earth. Rain. Wild mint. And beneath it, a tiny, terrified heartbeat that echoed through the stone of the mountain like a muffled drum. "You are exhausted, Lyra Ashbourne. You have walked sixteen miles without rest. Your pulse is erratic. Your muscles are tearing," Cassian said to the empty air, his black eyes devoid of pity, anger, or triumph. He unsheathed his silver blade by two inches. The metallic sounded like a death knell in the roaring storm. "The Grand Council wants your heart," he continued, taking a step up the muddy ravine. "The Rogue Emperor wants your power. The Nightshade King wants your truth. But to me... you are simply the end of a line." The silver wolves dissolved into bright, ethereal mist, their task complete. The trail didn't need tracking anymore. The scent of fear was so thick in the air, Cassian could taste it on the back of his tongue. "Run all you want, little healer. My blade has never missed a heart. And tonight will be no different," Cassian whispered, his pace steady, relentless, and unhurried. The rain fell in blinding sheets, turning the mountain slope into a treacherous waterfall of mud and loose gravel. Lyra slipped, her bare knee slamming hard against a sharp rock. Pain exploded up her leg, white-hot and sickening, causing her to cry out into the thunderous roar of the storm. "Ah! Gods... please!" Lyra sobbed. She clutching her bruised leg as she slid several feet down the muddy slope before her hands caught the root of an old bush. Tears mixed with the cold rain streaming down her face, washing away the soot from Ashwood, but leaving behind the raw, red cuts from the thorns. She forced herself back up, her teeth grinding together so hard her jaw ached. Her left ankle throbbed with every step, nearly giving way beneath her small weight. Lightning ripped across the dark sky, illuminating the sheer rock face above her for a split second. There, tucked behind a thick curtain of hanging ivy and jagged slate, was a dark, narrow opening in the cliffside. A cave. "A shelter..." Lyra gasped, her voice trembling violently. "Just... just get inside. Get out of the wind." Dragging her injured leg, Lyra scrambled up the last few feet of loose stone, parting the heavy ivy with her raw, bloody hands. She tumbled into the dark opening, landing heavily on dry, hard stone. The roar of the storm instantly muffled, replaced by the deep, echoing silence of the mountain's interior. Lyra lay on her back, her chest heaving as she sucked in mouthfuls of dry, cool air. "I made it... I made it..." She rolled over onto her knees, shivering so hard her teeth rattled together like stones. She reached into her torn apron pocket, her numb fingers wrapping around her small iron trowel and a piece of dry flint she always carried for her herb-drying fires. Hands shaking uncontrollably, she struck the iron against the flint over a small pile of dry bat guano and dead leaves near the cave entrance. A tiny, flickering orange flame caught the leaves. Lyra blew on it desperately, her breath nursing the spark until a small, fragile campfire filled the dark chamber with a warm, amber glow. "Warmth..." Lyra wept quietly, holding her raw hands over the tiny fire. "Just a little warmth..." As the flickering light expanded, casting long shadows against the jagged stone walls, Lyra froze. The interior of the cave wasn't natural. The walls weren't rough, unshaped granite. They were smooth, carved with deliberate, ancient precision. Intricate murals covered the stone from the dirt floor all the way up to the vaulted ceiling thirty feet above her head. Lyra slowly stood up, forgetting the pain in her ankle as she stepped closer to the wall. "What is this place?" she whispered. The carvings depicted a grand, sweeping story. On the left side, tall, fierce wolf-like creatures with sharp claws and glowing eyes stood in rows, bowing down toward a central figure. On the right side, hundreds of human figures knelt in the dirt, their hands raised in prayer. And in the very center of the wall, carved into a smooth slab of white marble that seemed completely untouched by time, was the image of a woman. She wore no crown, carried no weapons, and had no wolf features. She stood beneath a massive, perfectly round full moon, her hands outstretched. From her open palms, carved lines of light flowed outward, wrapping around both the wolves and the humans, binding them together under a single, harmonious sky. "The Moon Successor. It... it looks like..." Lyra breathed, her heart slamming against her ribs as she stared at the ancient artwork. Around the woman's neck in the carving, carved with microscopic detail, was a circular pendant. Lyra’s breath caught in her throat. She slowly reached into her pocket and pulled out the silver pendant Old Man Thomas had given her before he died. She held it up to the wall. The runes carved into her pendant matched the runes on the stone carving with terrifying, absolute perfection. Every line, every swirl, every ancient character was identical. "Thomas... What did you give me? What was my mother keeping from me?!" Lyra choked on a sob, her eyes wide with overwhelming horror and confusion. The small campfire flickered violently as a cold draft snaked deep into the cavern, but Lyra couldn't move. She was completely hypnotized by the central carving. Her hand trembled as she stretched her fingers out toward the stone woman's face. "Who were you?" Lyra whispered, her tears dripping onto her dirt-stained fingers. "Why are they killing people because of this? Why did Joan have to die? Why did Thomas have to die for a piece of old silver?!" The moment her fingertips touched the carved forehead of the woman on the wall, the silver pendant in her left hand flared with a blinding, ethereal light. The small campfire was instantly extinguished, but the cave did not go dark. Instead, every single rune carved into the white marble walls ignited with a brilliant, cool silver luminescence. The light pulsed like a living, beating heart, washing over Lyra's frail body in waves of suffocating, ancient magic. Lyra tried to pull her hand back, but her fingers were glued to the stone. "No! Stop! Let me go!" The air in the cave grew weightless. The sound of the roaring storm outside vanished completely, replaced by a deep, resonant humming that resonated directly inside her skull, vibrating her very bones. "Lyra..." Lyra’s eyes blew wide open. The voice didn't come from the entrance. It didn't come from the air. It resonated directly inside her mind—gentle, vast, and ancient beyond comprehension, carrying the heavy weight of a thousand forgotten winters. "Who... who's there?! Show yourself!" Lyra screamed, tears streaming down her glowing cheeks as she struggled against the invisible pull of the wall. "Do not fear the light, child of the First Seer," the female voice echoed, wrapping around her soul like a warm, protective embrace. "You have carried the burden of silence for twenty-four winters, believing yourself to be hollow... believing yourself to be weak." "I am weak! I'm just a healer! I couldn't save my village! I couldn't save anyone! I don't have a wolf! I'm nothing!" Lyra sobbed into the glowing cavern. "You are not nothing," the ancient voice corrected softly, filled with a deep, tragic grief that made Lyra's heart ache. "You are the balance. You are the vessel chosen before the first Alpha ever claimed a crown. The wolf blood was not denied to you, Lyra... it was suppressed, to preserve the spark of the true throne." "I don't want a throne!" Lyra screamed, her voice cracking with pure, raw desperation. "I just want my home back! I want my peaceful life back! Please, just take this pendant and let me go!" "The path was chosen the moment the Blood Eclipse was written in the stars," the voice whispered, growing fainter, as if fading into a vast, distant ocean. "The seven crowns are rotten, child. They kill because they are terrified. They hunt you because they know their reign of iron is coming to an end." "Please! Help me!" Lyra begged, feeling the magic starting to recede from her hands. "There are hunters outside! They have swords! They have wolves! How am I supposed to survive?!" The light on the wall began to pulse rapidly, flickering like a dying star. "Trust the spark within your blood. Run, Lyra... run into the dark... for they do not fear your weakness..." the ancient voice delivered its final, chilling warning, echoing like a fading bell inside her mind. The voice paused for a fraction of a second, the pressure in the room rising to an agonizing pitch. "...they fear what you will become." The silver light violently collapsed back into the marble wall and the pendant, vanishing in a split second. The cave plunged into pitch-black darkness. Lyra collapsed to her hands and knees on the cold stone floor, gasping for air as if she had just been dragged from the depths of a frozen lake. She was drenched in cold sweat, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs, the terrifying echo of the ancient voice still ringing in her ears. "What I will become..." Lyra rasped, her hands shaking as she clutched her head in the dark. "I'm just... I'm just a human..." A heavy, terrifying sound shattered the quiet of the cave. It wasn't the sound of dripping water, nor was it the wind. It was the deliberate, heavy, rhythmic crunch of iron-soled boots stepping onto the dry slate near the entrance. Lyra froze, her breath instantly locking in her throat. Slowly, painfully, she turned her head toward the narrow mouth of the cave. The storm outside was still raging, lightning flashing periodically across the night sky. And framed against that violent, electric backdrop stood a massive, terrifying silhouette. Cassian Noctis stepped completely through the curtain of hanging ivy, his black iron armor glistening with rainwater and fresh, dark blood. He didn't look at the ancient carvings on the wall. He didn't look at the burnt remains of her tiny campfire. His complete, absolute focus was locked onto the small, trembling human girl cowering in the dark on the floor. With a slow, agonizingly smooth motion, Cassian reached over his shoulder and unsheathed his massive silver blade. The ancient steel caught the faint moonlight from outside, gleaming with a cold, merciless light that illuminated the dark iron mask hiding his face. "Lyra Ashbourne," Cassian said, his voice flat, emotionless, and carrying the absolute finality of an open grave. Lyra backed away on her hands and knees until her spine hit the smooth, icy surface of the marble wall. She had nowhere left to run. Her trowel lay useless five feet away. Her ankle was swollen, and her hands were devoid of magic. "P-Please... Please... don't..." Lyra choked out, her voice a pathetic, trembling whisper as she looked up at the giant standing before her. Cassian raised the silver blade, pointing the sharp, deadly tip directly at her pounding chest. "Your contract has reached its conclusion," the executioner whispered into the freezing air of the cave. "Do not struggle. It will only hurt longer." He took a step forward, his shadow swallowing her completely.
