Billy Jo was in the back of the Jeep, her arms shoved in Mark’s coat because the little boy sitting beside her was wrapped in hers. Jay was five years old and terrified, yet he was surprisingly together for a kid they had found locked up. She had an idea of what he had gone through, but she didn’t know how far she could push him to talk.
“You promise I won’t be hurt. You won’t take me back and lock me up?” Jay said.
He was so damn sweet. Chris, who was in the passenger seat, kept looking back at her and the little boy, whereas Mark was doing his best to drive in whiteout conditions on roads that were barely passable. He hadn’t said one word since putting her in the back with the little boy, who was surprisingly small for his age.
