The Storm

Chapter 5: The Storm Austin woke early the next morning. For the first time in years, he had slept without interruptions, phone calls, or emergency meetings. The peaceful sounds of Harmony Village greeted him as he stepped outside. Birds sang from nearby trees. Children laughed in the distance. The fresh morning air carried the scent of flowers and earth. Austin found himself smiling. After breakfast, Grandpa Heaven and several villagers continued showing him parts of the village he had not yet explored. They visited orchards filled with peaches, apples, and pears. They walked through herb gardens where medicinal plants grew in carefully organized rows. Austin asked countless questions. The villagers answered patiently. By midday, he had filled several pages of notes. Even Grace found herself impressed by how interested he seemed. Most visitors simply admired the village. Austin genuinely wanted to understand it. As the day continued, dark clouds slowly began gathering above the hills. At first, nobody paid much attention. Storms were common during that season. But by late afternoon, the sky had turned gray. The wind grew stronger. Leaves rustled violently through the trees. Several villagers exchanged concerned glances. "This one looks serious," one farmer remarked. Grandpa Heaven nodded. "I think you're right." Austin looked toward the horizon. The clouds appeared unusually dark. Back in the city, he rarely noticed weather changes. Here, however, nature felt much closer. Much more powerful. As evening approached, villagers began preparing their homes. Windows were secured. Animals were moved into shelters. Children were called indoors. Grace helped her grandmother store several baskets of vegetables. "The storm is arriving faster than expected," she said. Grandma Kelly nodded. "Make sure all the guests have food before nightfall." "I will." Grace gathered several containers of food and began delivering them throughout the village. The first few deliveries were easy. By the time she reached the final guest house, however, the weather had become much worse. Thunder rumbled across the sky. Lightning flashed in the distance. Rain began falling heavily. Grace pulled her shawl tighter around her shoulders and hurried toward Austin's guest house. The food basket felt heavier with every step. Suddenly, a loud crack of thunder exploded overhead. The entire village seemed to shake. Grace jumped slightly. The storm had arrived. When she finally reached the guest house, she noticed something unusual. The front door was partially open. Rain blew inside. "Doctor Gorven?" she called. No answer. Concern crossed her face. She carefully stepped inside. "Doctor Gorven?" Another flash of lightning illuminated the room. Then she saw him. Austin was on the floor beside the bed. His hands covered his head. His entire body trembled. "No..." he whispered. Another thunderclap shook the building. Austin flinched violently. "Please stop..." Grace froze. She had never seen anything like it. For a moment, she simply stared. Then she quickly set down the basket. "Doctor Gorven?" Austin didn't seem to hear her. His breathing was rapid. His face was pale. "Please..." he whispered again. "Make it stop." Grace immediately understood that this wasn't ordinary fear. Something deeper was happening. Something painful. She knelt beside him. "Doctor Gorven." His eyes were tightly shut. Rain pounded against the roof. Thunder roared again. Austin's hands shook. Without hesitation, Grace grabbed a nearby blanket and gently wrapped it around his shoulders. "It's okay," she said softly. "You're safe." Another flash of lightning lit the room. Austin squeezed his eyes shut. "No..." Grace sat beside him. She remembered something her grandmother often did when frightened children couldn't sleep. A lullaby. A very old song. One passed down through generations in Harmony Village. Quietly, she began singing. Her voice was soft and gentle. The familiar melody filled the room. At first, Austin remained tense. But gradually, his breathing slowed. The storm continued outside. Yet the panic slowly began loosening its grip. Grace kept singing. Again and again. The simple melody seemed to push away the fear. Minutes passed. Then an hour. Eventually Austin's trembling stopped. His eyes remained closed. The blanket rested around his shoulders. Grace continued humming quietly. "You don't have to be afraid," she whispered. For the first time, Austin opened his eyes. His vision was blurred. The room seemed distant. But he could see her. Grace. Sitting beside him. The storm still raged outside. Yet somehow the room felt calm. Safe. Austin tried to speak. Instead, exhaustion overwhelmed him. Grace noticed immediately. "Try to rest." Austin slowly nodded. Within minutes, sleep claimed him. Grace leaned against the bed. The storm showed no signs of stopping. Returning home would be dangerous. Besides, she couldn't leave him alone in this condition. She pulled part of the blanket around herself. Before long, her eyes began closing too. Outside, the storm raged for three long hours. Thunder echoed through Harmony Village. Rain flooded pathways. Wind shook the trees. Meanwhile, inside the guest house, both Austin and Grace slept peacefully. Far away, Grandma Kelly sat by her window. The storm worried her. "Grace is late," she said quietly. Grandpa Heaven looked up from his chair. "She'll be fine." "Are you sure?" He smiled calmly. "Our granddaughter is wise." Grandma Kelly frowned. "You don't seem worried at all." "I know Grace." He looked toward the darkness outside. "If the storm became too dangerous, she would find shelter." A small smile appeared on his face. "She's probably waiting somewhere safe until morning." Grandma Kelly eventually nodded. Though she still worried, she trusted her husband. Neither of them knew exactly where Grace was. Nor did they realize that by sunrise, everything would change. Because while the storm would eventually pass... The consequences of that night would remain forever.
