THE KING OF SHADOWS

1004 Words
The square was silent. Utterly silent. Cassian’s final words echoed through every mind. “Your father is still alive.” No one moved. No one breathed. The kingdom itself seemed frozen. Elaria stood at the center of it all. Her pulse thundered in her ears. Her father. Alive. The words made no sense. For nineteen years she had believed she had lost everything. No mother. No father. No family. No past. Now the truth was shifting again. Twisting. Changing. Becoming something she barely recognized. ⸻ Selene looked worse. Far worse. The Queen stared at the place where Cassian vanished. Her face had become completely pale. Not surprised. Not confused. Terrified. Elaria noticed immediately. And that frightened her more than Cassian’s revelation. Because Selene looked like a woman hearing an old nightmare return. ⸻ “Mother.” The word escaped before Elaria could stop it. Selene flinched. The reaction alone told Elaria enough. The Queen knew something. Something important. Something terrible. ⸻ The crowd began murmuring. Questions spread like wildfire. “If the king survived…” “Where has he been?” “Why didn’t he return?” “What really happened?” The kingdom had just learned that nineteen years of history might be false. And people were desperate for answers. ⸻ Varis stepped forward immediately. “Your Majesty.” His voice was urgent. “Not here.” Selene understood. The conversation couldn’t happen in public. Not after what Cassian revealed. Not after the Shadow Court exposed itself. Not after the kingdom learned its dead king might still be alive. ⸻ Within minutes… The Royal Family and senior council members gathered inside the Moon Chamber. The most secure room in the palace. Ancient silver wards covered every wall. No magic could enter. No spies could listen. No secrets could escape. Or so everyone hoped. ⸻ Elaria sat at the long silver table. Selene across from her. Lucien nearby. Varis standing beside the throne. The atmosphere felt suffocating. Because everyone knew the same thing. Selene had answers. And she had been hiding them. ⸻ Finally Elaria spoke. The question she could no longer ignore. “Is my father alive?” The room became still. Selene closed her eyes. Pain crossed her face. The answer came slowly. Reluctantly. Like a wound reopening. “I don’t know.” The words surprised everyone. Including Elaria. ⸻ “You don’t know?” Selene nodded. Tears shimmered in her eyes. “The night the palace fell…” Her voice cracked. “The king disappeared.” Silence. “He wasn’t found among the dead.” Another pause. “We searched for years.” Another. “There was nothing.” The Queen looked exhausted. Broken. Haunted. Like someone carrying grief for two decades. ⸻ Lucien frowned. “You never told me this.” Selene looked toward him. “No.” The Crown Prince stared. “Why?” The answer came immediately. Because it had haunted the kingdom for nineteen years. “Because hope is dangerous.” The chamber fell silent. No one argued. Because everyone understood. A missing king could create civil war. Pretenders. Rebellions. False claims. Chaos. The kingdom needed certainty. Even if that certainty was a lie. ⸻ Varis stepped forward. “There is more.” The old councilor looked uncomfortable. Which immediately caught Elaria’s attention. “What?” Varis hesitated. Then spoke. “The king wasn’t merely missing.” A chill ran through the room. “He was hunting something.” ⸻ The words landed heavily. Selene lowered her eyes. Lucien straightened. Elaria felt her pulse quicken. “Hunting what?” Varis looked toward the ancient symbols on the wall. Then answered. “The first Shadow King.” Silence. Absolute silence. ⸻ The name felt ancient. Forbidden. Dangerous. Elaria had never heard it before. But everyone else’s reaction told her enough. Even Lucien looked disturbed. ⸻ “The Shadow Court follows him.” Varis continued. “Their founder.” Another pause. “Their king.” Another. “The enemy of the Lunar Throne.” The room felt colder. Much colder. ⸻ Then Elaria remembered something. The chains. The ancient prison. The voice beneath the palace. The thing she sensed during the Trial. A horrible realization formed. “What if he’s already free?” No one answered. Because no one wanted to. ⸻ That night… Sleep never came. Not for Elaria. Not after everything she learned. She stood alone on the palace balcony. Watching moonlight cover the city. Her city. Her kingdom. A kingdom falling apart. A kingdom filled with lies. A kingdom where enemies hid behind noble titles. And somewhere beyond the horizon— Perhaps a father she had never met. Perhaps a king. Perhaps a prisoner. Perhaps a corpse. She didn’t know. And uncertainty was becoming unbearable. ⸻ Then she heard it. A whisper. Soft. Ancient. Impossible. The voice came from nowhere. And everywhere. The same voice she heard during the Trial. The voice beneath the Throne. ⸻ HEIR. Elaria froze. Her heart stopped. The voice continued. ⸻ THE TIME HAS COME. Silver light appeared across her balcony. Ancient runes emerged beneath her feet. The same symbols from the Trial. ⸻ SEEK THE TOMB OF MOONS. Elaria stared. Confused. Terrified. The voice continued. ⸻ THERE YOU WILL FIND THE FIRST TRUTH. The light intensified. The air trembled. The palace itself seemed to respond. ⸻ Then came the final words. The words that shattered everything. ⸻ YOUR FATHER IS NOT THE GREATEST SECRET. Silence. Elaria’s blood turned cold. ⸻ YOU ARE. The light vanished. The runes disappeared. The balcony returned to normal. As though nothing had happened. ⸻ But far away… Beyond the Dominion… Beyond the mountains… Beyond the dead lands… A man slowly opened his eyes. Silver eyes. Royal eyes. Ancient eyes. He sat chained inside a ruined temple. His beard long. His body scarred. His power restrained. Yet alive. Very much alive. ⸻ And as the moonlight touched his face, he whispered a single name. A name he had not spoken for nineteen years. “Elaria.”
