Chapter 4Sweat slicked the inside of my hockey gloves as I poised for the opening face-off in our fourth game, which happened to be against the Aces. We’d posted a 3-0 record thus far in the young season, so it’s not like a single loss would put us in a bad spot for playoff seedings. But this was one game I really wanted to win, for a very personal reason. Opposing centre Abby Stone, who also happened to be my ex, matched me glare for glare as we waited for the referee to come over to drop the ball. My eye darted down to the “C” on Abby’s blue sweater. Just like me, she captained her team. More than that, though, she’d been the one who pulled the whole team together, arranging sponsors, rounding up players, all of it.
