I heard them before I saw them, from the roaring engine of bikes running into the courtyard to the uneven crunch of boots on gravel and the sighs of frustration barely restrained, I knew they had returned and that their mission was fruitless. I wasn't sure if I was to feel relief or anger, that the love of my life had escaped safely or that my father's killer had escaped without justice.
