The days following Viviana’s first trial were filled with both progress and setbacks. She spent hours each day in the Seer’s grove, practicing her control over the earth, but each time, it felt as though the power she sought to harness slipped just out of reach.
It was frustrating—exhausting. The Seer’s quiet encouragement was helpful, but it did little to ease Viviana’s growing sense of inadequacy. She had moved the rock once, but it had felt so fragile, as if the very foundation beneath her feet might crumble at any moment.
Viviana was beginning to wonder if she would ever be able to control her abilities.
The forest had become her constant companion, the pulse of the earth almost familiar now, but her attempts to command it remained clumsy. Every time she tried to manipulate the earth, the rocks or vines twisted in unpredictable ways, and the energy within her was too volatile to contain.
“You’re rushing,” the Seer had told her after yet another failed attempt. “You cannot force the earth to obey your will. It requires patience, Viviana.”
But Viviana didn’t know how to be patient. She wanted to learn, to control the power that lurked inside her, but the more she tried, the further away it seemed.
This particular morning, the sky was overcast, and a thick mist rolled in from the east, creeping through the trees and wrapping the grove in a quiet stillness. Viviana stood near a large boulder, focusing on the energy in the earth beneath her feet. Her eyes were closed, her breathing slow as she tried to center herself.
It had been hours of this already—trying, failing, trying again.
“Patience,” she murmured to herself, repeating the Seer’s words.
She could feel the energy beneath the earth’s surface, a deep rhythm that pulsed with life, but it remained elusive. When she reached out for it, it slipped through her fingers like sand.
Frustrated, Viviana stood up, dusting off her hands. “I can’t do this,” she muttered to herself.
The Seer, who had been sitting in silence nearby, finally spoke. “You’re too hard on yourself.”
Viviana shot her a look. “How can you say that? I’m getting nowhere.”
The Seer’s expression softened, and she rose from her seat, walking over to Viviana. “Do you truly believe that?”
Viviana hesitated. She wanted to say yes, but deep down, she knew that wasn’t entirely true. She could feel the power inside her, could feel it just beyond her reach. But it was more than that—it was fear. Fear of not being able to control it, fear of making a mistake, of hurting someone.
The Seer’s eyes sparkled with understanding. “You are afraid of your own power,” she said softly. “You are afraid of what you might become.”
Viviana looked away, unable to meet the Seer’s gaze. She had never said it out loud, but the fear had been there all along—ever since she had first felt the earth shift beneath her. What if she lost control again? What if the power inside her consumed her?
The Seer’s voice broke through her thoughts. “You must learn to trust yourself, Viviana. Trust that you will not be consumed by your power, but that you will master it.”
“But how?” Viviana asked, her voice breaking. “How do I trust something I don’t understand?”
The Seer smiled gently. “You begin by accepting it. You begin by embracing it—not as something that controls you, but as something that you are meant to wield.”
Viviana felt a weight lift from her chest as the Seer’s words sank in. “Embrace it…” she whispered.
“Yes,” the Seer replied. “You cannot fight against the earth. You cannot fight against your own nature. You must become one with it.”
Viviana turned back toward the boulder, her mind spinning with the Seer’s words. She had been trying to force her power, trying to control it like an outside force. But what if the key was to let go of that fear, to accept the power as a part of her?
She closed her eyes again, her breath steadying as she centered herself. She focused on the rhythm beneath the earth, the pulse of the land, and for the first time, instead of trying to control it, she allowed it to flow through her.
The connection was different this time—gentler, as though the earth was reaching out to her, not as something to conquer, but as something to join. Viviana felt herself sinking into the rhythm, the earth’s pulse becoming her own heartbeat.
With a deep breath, she reached out and focused on the boulder before her. Instead of commanding it to move, she simply allowed her mind to guide it, letting the energy flow through her without force.
For a long moment, nothing happened. Then, slowly, the boulder shifted.
Viviana gasped, her eyes snapping open. The boulder rose into the air, just a few inches, but it was enough. She could feel the earth around it, guiding it, supporting it as it lifted.
She held her breath, the boulder trembling slightly in the air. She could feel the power within her, the same power that had once been so terrifying, now flowing smoothly through her, calm and controlled.
But just as quickly as it had risen, the boulder dropped back to the ground with a soft thud.
Viviana’s knees buckled beneath her, and she sank to the ground, breathless. “I did it…” she whispered, a grin spreading across her face.
The Seer was smiling, her eyes glinting with approval. “You’ve taken your first step toward mastery, Viviana. You are learning to trust yourself.”
Viviana’s heart was still racing, but there was a sense of triumph in her chest. She had done it. It wasn’t perfect, but she had done it.
The Seer crouched beside her, her voice gentle. “Patience, Viviana. This is only the beginning. You will face many trials, but each one will teach you more about your abilities. You must learn to be patient with yourself.”
Viviana nodded, wiping the sweat from her brow. It had been a long road to get here, and there would be many more challenges ahead. But for the first time, she felt as though she could rise to meet them.
“I’ll try,” she said, a determined glint in her eyes. “I’ll trust myself.”
The Seer placed a hand on her shoulder, her expression warm. “That is all anyone can ask.”
