The shocking truth
As Christian prepared to start explaining he got really serious which made Ella more nervous. Still she promised herself that she would not show it so Christian would be able to tell her all he needed, because truth be told she was more curious than nervous at this point. What did he mean by werewolves were real? and how did he know?
Before Ella's mind managed to take her imagination to wild places Christian started to speak. 'Ok so I just want you to know that I care for you deeply and ever since I first saw you I have had the need to be around you. And just the thought of not speaking to you for an entire day drives me crazy.' Ella just smiled and nodded her head to try to tell him that she felt the same. She didn't dare to speak since he had asked her to wait to hear him out first so that was what she was going to do. 'So I guess I should start at the beginning so you will have an easier time following me' he continued.
'So as you have gathered I am quite privileged in my life' again Ella nodded her head. 'I know you think my dad is this big business man who has worked hard for what we own, and in some sense that is true, but the truth is, he is not a businessman, he is a king' Ella couldn't hide her surprise as without meaning to she took a big gulp of air and felt her eyes open wide along with her mouth. Christian became shy again but just took her hand and continued 'I know that for you America is a Republican country with elected leaders but for me and my kind we are not. We have a king and a queen, who are my parents and my father's parents before him and my grandmother's parents before her and so on since the beginning of time' He looked at Ella to see her reaction and when she only nodded her head again he knew she was giving him what he had asked, to be able to tell her everything before speaking herself.
With that he continued 'So from that you can deduct that one day I will be king and I hope you can accept me as that, but there is more' Ella was so shocked that she could hardly breathe but still managed to nod her head. 'Now for the really hard to believe fact' he continued 'I am not just a prince who will inherit a kingdom, but I am a lycan prince who will inherit a lycan kingdom that exists within the US in secrecy.' Again he looked at Ella to see her reaction and like he expected she was looking at him with disbelief, it hurt him a bit but he knew this was a big bombshell he was dropping on her so he decided not to take it badly and continued. 'Ok I know it is a lot but I promise we are not monsters and contrary to the stories that you have heard and read about werewolves we don't hunt humans or eat them. We are just like humans in the sense that we are a civilized society with rules and laws and our own legal system.'
At this point Ella couldn't hold it in any longer and had to ask 'So you are a werewolf? and they are real and have always been real but no one knows about it?' Christian smiled and nodded his head before he continued. 'Yes, we come from the moon goddess who we cherish above everything else and we live by her laws and she rules our lives.' Again Ella had to ask 'what do you mean she rules your life?' Christian cleared his throat and continued 'humans have the freedom to choose their live partners, or mates as we call it, but the moon goddess chooses our mates for us. We live in hierarchical societies within packs. The size of the packs varies and the biggest pack is the pack of the king and queen. Each pack has their own hierarchy within itself where the leader is called Alpha and his mate is called Luna, next to them is the Beta and his mate, the Gamma, Chief warrior and their mates. Everyone else in the pack is called Omega, they are the workers of the packs. Without confusing you with more information right now, I'm just going to tell you that the Omegas have their hierarchy as well, but more about that later.'
'The Alphas are born Alphas but they can be challenged even though it is rare and never ends well. We also have our criminals who we call rogues, who have for some reason been sentenced to live without a pack. Some rogues have formed an alliance and call themselves a pack but they have no rights in our society and no land.' Ella decided to ask again 'You say Alphas are born, not chosen, how did the first Alphas come to be then?' Christian seemed happy that she had asked and answered 'The first lycans that the moon goddess put on the earth were the Royal family, the first king and queen, they had many sons who could not all inherit the king title so the first born became the next king and his brothers became the first Alphas. Now, the moon goddess realized that in order for the lycan race to continue she would have to give the sons of the first king mates. So she put female lycans on earth, each one made to fit one son, she made the females to be truly made for one Alpha so that each of them would be guaranteed a mate who would never leave him, making families and packs in the end. Again the Alphas all had many pups, or children as you would say, making the hierarchy within each pack necessary to ensure order. So the first born sons of the Alphas became the next Alpha and the second son the Beta, the youngest the Gamma. As each of them found their true mates and started a family it was always the first sons that inherited the title of their father unless they only had daughters. In that case the true mate of the first born daughter would inherit the title.' Christian looked at Ella to check if she was following his story and also to see her reaction. To his surprise she was not only following his story but seemed to be believing it as well. 'So it's always just lycans that are true mates to other lycans then?' Ella asked. 'At first that was the way it was, but throughout the centuries there have been many power struggles who have not ended well and thus created rogues. Some rogues are true criminals and go berserk in order to try to find vengeance while others, the peaceful ones have gone to live as humans, chosen a mate without claiming them, which has resulted in many human bloodlines to have a dormant lycan DNA in them.'
Ella looked at Christian and asked 'claim them? what do you mean? how does that work?' Christian smiled 'Ok as you know, humans have the freedom to choose their live partners but at the price of not having any guarantee of them staying together forever. Also they have no guarantee that other humans won't try to come between them but as a way to let others know that they have chosen and are committed to each other some get married. Now you know that even with a marriage contract they still have no guarantee of staying together. Either one of them can always change their minds and ask for a divorce, with that they are free to choose a new mate.'
Ella knew first hand how human marriage worked, or more didn't work, as her father had married her mother only to leave both of them without any notice or explanation. Christian realized what was going through Ella's mind and continued 'Now for us lycans we don't choose our own mates, the moon goddess chooses for us. When we meet our true mates we feel a strong bond instantly and it's like we have known our mates our whole lives, even though we might be meeting them for the first time.' Ella realized that Christian was describing the feeling she had with Christian the first time they met, the feeling that had only gotten stronger and more right with each day since. 'In order for every other lycan to know that these two are mates, they claim each other and have a mating ceremony. When lycans find a true mate in humans they can choose to claim them, therefore making them fully lycan, or they can choose to leave the lycan community and live as human with the consequences I just listed'
Christian smiled and ventured closer to her and when she didn't move away he put his arms around her. 'This is the feeling I have with you, the feeling I had when I first saw you at the campsite' Ella smiled as she recalled their first meeting. 'So are you saying that I have dormant lycan DNA and that I'm your true mate?' Christian nodded his head 'I think, without being completely sure, that my father will be able to explain a lot about your father and his actions. I have a feeling that he knows something he hasn't told us yet.' Ella just nodded her head, not knowing what she should say about that. All of a sudden she seemed startled 'If I'm your true mate, do I have any choice whether I am with you or not? and what will happen to my mom?' Ella asked. Christian hugged her close 'Of course you have a choice, why do you think I have been so afraid of you rejecting me and choose to live on as human? We always have a choice, but if you reject the mate the moon goddess has chosen for you, you are essentially choosing a life without a mate. Unless you have a solid reason to do so but it is really rare to have that so...' Christian's sentence trailed off like he couldn't bear the thought of what his life would be like if she rejected him.
Now it was Ella's turn to comfort Christian so she hugged him close 'I'm not rejecting you, I just can't imagine leaving my mom, she has no one besides me because her family rejected her when she chose to move away with my family after university. When he left she tried to reach out to them but they basically told her that she could only blame herself and they would not help her since she didn't listen to their advice before.'
Christian hugged her tight and told her they would figure it all out, that he would do whatever it took to make her mom always be able to be a part of her life. 'Thank you, umm if I would be fully lycan and we had grown up in the same umm pack? would we have known that we were true mates when we were little kids? Christian smiled 'No, you can't feel the mate bond until both have come of age, at 18. When I turned 18 I couldn't find my mate which meant that she was either not 18 or human.' Ella looked at him 'Couldn't it have meant that you just hadn't met her yet?' Christian chuckled 'No, with me being the prince and all, my 18th birthday party was huge, every unmated female lycan over 18 in the kingdom attended. It's a tradition for the Royal princes and princesses to have every unmated lycan of the opposite s*x who are of age there to help speed up the process of finding their mates. That was how my parents and Christopher's parents found each other, my mom and aunt came to my dad's 18th birthday.'
'Ok so has Christopher found his mate?' Christian just smiled and nodded his head with this knowing look in his eyes. Ella knew that Julia had hooked up with Christopher on his birthday a few weeks before and when she realized what that meant she just looked at Christian who was still smiling. 'Is Julia his mate?' Christian nodded 'Yes, they are having a very similar conversation themselves.' Ella just smiled, knowing Julia, she knew that she would be enjoying this because ever since Ella could remember Julia had claimed that she just knew werewolves were real and one day she would find a way to prove it.
When she looked back at Christian to tell him this he seemed to be in deep thoughts, then all of a sudden he said 'My father wants us to go to his house now so he can talk to us about everything' Ella giggled 'How do you know he wants us to come now? Can you read his mind or something?' Christian just smiled 'Or something, you'll figure it out when the time comes. But we should get going, we shouldn't make my father wait. He is not fun when he is cranky'
With that Christian stood up and held out his hand for Ella who took his hand, allowing him to help her up. They quickly packed the blanket and the leftovers of the picnic back in the basket and went to the car. Ella couldn't help to notice that Christian seemed really relaxed smiling from ear to ear. She also realized that she was just the same, relaxed and smiling holding his hand, knowing that she hadn't been imagining that he liked her.
