Just like twenty years ago.
He immediately shut all the thoughts down. That event wasn't something that he allowed himself breathing space to even think about.
Micheal stared at the girl crumpled up on the ground, and he had no idea what he was about to do with her. She grabbed onto her Nana's body, her own body trembling.
"Nana... Please open your eyes. It's me, I brought help."
Micheal bit his tongue to bite back any sharp retorts that bubbled in his throat.
One part of him yelled to make her pay for even thinking of stealing his beryl. The other part whispered to just leave. The reason she stole the beryl was dead. He got it back, and now there was nothing joining them together.
Her cries filled the air, high pitched sounds of sorrow that pierced through through his cold heart. he took a step to the door and paused, turning back to her.
This place is filthy, he thought to himself. his skin crawled with the thought of staying here any longer.
"Ah shit." He grumbled under his breath. "What the f**k do I do now."
A dull thud filled the air. Micheal jumped back, shocked to see what had happened.
Melody collapsed beside Nana's body, probably from shock and exhaustion.
A sneer appeared on Michael's lips. "This girl..what is she even trying to do?"
He crouched down beside her fallen body and touched her face. Thankfully, she was still alive. Irritation flashed through Micheal and he got to his feet.
He walked out of the shack and headed outside. Once he was out, he inhaled a large lungful of air. The air outside wasn't any better, and it still settled in his throat like a warning of death. The smell of rot and decay was pungent here.
"Are you done, sir?" Zakai asked. Micheal turned to him.
He paused and turned to the house. Through the open door, he could see Melody's unconscious body sprawled on the ground.
"Is anything the problem, sir?"
"Keep quiet."
"Yes sir."
Micheal let out a huff of annoyance. "For goodness f*****g sake." He muttered to himself.
"Sir. This girl just lost her last family."
"Zakai I said shut up."
"Don't you think it'd be quite cruel to leave her behind?"
"I was f*****g thinking about it." Micheal snapped.
"We need a new cleaner anyway." Zakai added with a hint of a smile. "Think about it."
Right. The last cleaner had been shot by Zakai. The fool was caught divulging private information. And since then, Micheal hadn't been bothered to get a new cleaner.
He stormed back inside the house and picked Melody up, slinging her over his shoulder like a sack of potatoes.
She weight almost nothing. Did she even eat at all? With the state of things in the shack, Micheal highly doubted that she had had a solid meal in months.
"You should be grateful to me," He muttered, annoyance lacing his voice. Melody groaned, her body limp. "I should have cut your damned fingers off. Heaven alone knows what I'm doing now."
He carried her outside to the car. Zakai held the door open while Micheal laid Melody across the back seat.
"Let's get out of here." He said to Zakai.
Zakai got in and started the car. He drove off.
Micheal tried to stay as far away from the girl, but that was near impossible in the backseat. For such a tiny and frail looking person, she had quite the pair of long legs on her.
Begrudgingly, Micheal took he rhead and placed it across his lap. She moved, folding her hands and putting them under her head as a pillow.
Micheal looked up and he and Zakai's eyes met through the rearview mirror.
"I know," Zakai said with a chuckle. "I will keep my mouth shut this time."
"Why thank you."
Suddenly Melody woke up. she sat up, rubbing sleep out of her eyes. "Where...where am I?"
"In my car." Micheal replied.
She jumped back as if she had touched something burning. "Nana! You can't leave her behind!"
"You should worry about yourself." Micheal snapped at her.
She twisted her body around, grabbed the door handle and tugged. "Let me out! I have to bury her! You can't leave her body there to rot!"
"Will you stop it?!" Micheal yelled. He grabbed her shoulder.
She struck out immediately her fist aimed right at his face. Had he been a second late in dodging, she would have given him a black eye.
He scoffed. Such sharp reflexes on her. Little wonder she was able to get close to him and steal his beryl.
Her eyes burned with anger, her body shaking "let me down."
"Zakai, turn the car around." Micheal commanded.
He didn't miss how she exhaled a sigh of relief. She scooted to the farthest corner of the car, her arms folded in on herself, sharp eyes glaring daggers at him.
She reminded him of a kitten who's mother had been crushed by a car.
