"If life can remove someone you never thought of losing, it will replace them with the one you never dreamt of having"
Eva's POV:-
Pushing the key in its lock, I unlocked the door and stepped inside. There hung a certain antique smell in the air that gave this place a rather unique identity. My eyes closed and took on the memories of this place that hung heavy in the air.
This house was absolutely gigantic from the outside however the inside was a whole different story. It was magestic, thats the only word I could use after watching a huge old house sitting in overgrown vines and an orchard behind it.
What put me more at ease was the fact that this place was secluded. It was a tranquil and serene area, at least from the looks of it. The best part was that it was nearer to Raaky's mansion. I'd get back here in under 10 minutes that is if I walked at human speed and a benders speed can bring me in under 60 seconds. My advantage grew me superior to those young benders who can flash.
Being the age I was, it would only take me a few seconds to reach here. A bender can flash at their will if they learn and practice, some never even try and some fly, while age remains the best scale of testing speed. Like wine, the older it is, the finer it will taste.I looked around taking in my surroundings already liking the interior.
This house was an old 18th century mansion but I could sense that some things were older than that. I did wonder sometimes on how I got the ability to sense all this and it always remained unsolved. Maybe just a small reward for living my life on the run. The interior was amazingly preserved. Its a shame how the real Eva never knew she was lucky enough to inherit all this but never had the chance to put it to better use and live good. She might have lived like a queen because the Whitmore's sure owned more than Any family in this city and as far as I have found they were a talented bunch.
Eva worked with artists, exposing the art work in exhibitions and places like that, she herself was quiet an artist. What I had to do to her was unfortunate and regretful. No matter how much I try to tell myself that my purpose was much grave and demanding it would still not justify what happened.
Humans and supernatural creatures can be defined very simply if we look at it. Our selfish reasons will always demand us to do the unthinkable and it is in our nature to justify it to be of greater purpose or the need of the hour. That is the reality of this world. I couldn't afford to lose, I did what I had to but regret is something I can't rid of nor the consequences. All I can do is provide myself comfort in justify it for whatever reasons. At this point it's not about what's right and what's wrong. It's about me doing what I have to do no matter what.
Walking around the house I came across a room with french windows and glass doors, the sun peeked through the woods behind the house astonishingly calming. The room had a black piano in front of those doors and a couch set on the opposite side covered with a cloth to keep the dust away. Through the glass doors I could see the huge garden behind the house with a dry swimming pool at one side and a dead greenhouse with some overgrown and some dead plants around it.
The looks of this property gave away a feeling of some happy childhoods and kids playing around. Ira Whitmore was a very strict man but unlike most old rich men he was different from what most perceived him to be. This city has brought back so many memories that I've buried so deep. Its been a thousand years and to this day I feel my grief like a new cut, bleeding out uncontrollably, probably because of the things my family's loss led to. I still hear the laughing and the cheers going on around the village, I hear how father asked me to dance with him picking me up and swaying around and how I erupted in a fit of giggles. Times were good and the Whitmore's were friends.
Where at one side benders have endless possibilities at getting what they want and I being what I really am, we still live in the dark, unknown to the world. I am still here to avenge my family because yet being what I am I could not save them.
The thought of things never returning back to the same way saddens me beyond measure. For every smile and every happy moment there will always remain an unimaginable amount of days that you will spend paying for those moments. Then experience a short happy relief and pay for it again. On and on this wheel spins. Hopeless.
Traitorous tears started to form in my eyes and I had to remind myself to remain unbreakable because letting tears in the way would only hold me back. It has taken too long and too much for me to build my merciless demeanor and I am not letting it go until I have my revenge. While we try to numb out the pain we numb out our humanity, which to begin with is already very minimal in supernatural creatures.
Getting familiar with the house further, I selected the master bedroom as my own, then took a bath and got ready to go meet Abelia. Putting on a maroon baggy, one shoulder off sweater and jeans pairing it with black pumps and a black scarf all over my hair. It took me forever to calm my hair but I had no choice but to cover them up.
Remembering last night I recalled how Raaky had his eyes planted at me like some vulture ready to prance and grab his victim. But what confused me was why his eyes kept changing color at a constant rate while every other bender's in the room had their normal eye color. I haven't seen something like this before. Even if he is among the ten first class benders it still shouldn't be happening. None of the others had this, why him?
The council has degraded more than my expectations. It used to be a society of members with equal power. Last night was a different representation of them. The council's hesitation to speak against Raaky did not go unnoticed by me and the fact that Clark was the only one who dared to do it told me that he is the way to Raaky's trust. He addressed Raaky directly and none of the council members made any eye contact with him besides Clark. It's like they were scared to put up their opinion. Then again since I left the Alesina's had the tables turned in their benefit. The council openly welcomed the older system of a ruler for the supernatural population.
I would not deny the fact that Raaky had an aura of power and authority around him even at the party he looked as if the alpha wolf, alone. Couldn't even deny the fact that he was strikingly handsome and sure caught the attention of the female crowd around him. Even though he was in his bender's age of 20 to 26, he seems like a person who would fit well in the shoes of a dangerous man not an immature teenager. He is the enemy here, I can't risk anything over this glorified, dangerous, mystical factor of his.
My memories of the past are what keeps it all alive. The events of a day can be forgotten but how do I forget that the Alesina's have not let me live for even a day since I left.
This council thinks that they can cover everything up and walk like nothing happens besides the budget getting high or some sick bastard beating his wife to death while intoxicated or probably minor bender issues of the city that Raaky makes them handle. Not that I am aiming to bring the existence of benders to the human world. Its within the supernatural world that I need things to make a shift for the better.
Our world is heading towards destruction and as it is the human race is already fighting amongst themselves destroying the planet, if we don't change, might as well just burn the planet. At least we can try to keep balance in the world because no matter how capable the human population is, it is us who get the work done. Human's were the first to set foot in the world and they have a right to be independent without threats from our population. However them being incredibly stupid and power hungry is a combination that does not sit well together.
Benders can be perceived as the closest things to nature due to the elemental powers we possess. The reality is far from it, there are sides so dark to us that even we cannot describe at times. Our connection to nature condemns us to experience every shift more acutely than any other creature or human. The older the bender the more calmer he may be but the younger ones are the most atrocious and repulsive cases. Raaky unfortunately with what I've seen so far has either matured too much and blown his switch or just not enough. I have heard how he kills ruthlessly and how his ways usually end up bloody though successful. He only see's bloodshed as a means of productivity. Not at all what I remembered.
The world is better without the fake, power hungry democracy that breathes every day in places like Sayonara, with councils of murderers, looters and of simply put monsters.Even though scared of Raaky, the members are vultures in disguise.
Me being a mysterious presence in this city was the best cover I could have ever had and their obliviousness to who I really was, would do me favours unimaginable. Time is a traitorous thing, your world can stop and you can only watch this ruthless entity passing by you and leaving you behind if hou can't hold on. How I wish to be who I am today and travel a thousand years back.
Standing up from the chair I was seated on, I walked towards Abelia who was busy working on her spell.
"Abelia you have been of great help to me and I appreciate you holding up with my attitude at numerous times. But now the danger to all this has increased about 10 times and you living alone will only make it more difficult for me to concentrate. I think you should come live at my mansion till we are done here." She looked at me bewildered and all her movements stopped.
"I can take care of myself. I appreciate you thinking about me to this extent but I will be fine." Abelia is a strong woman and there is no doubt about that. Her past was not really rainbows and sunshine's. However, still she is a liability for me where I can't let her get in the wrong hands nor can I dispose of her.
"Look I know you are strong enough to protect yourself and on occasion you have proved yourself time and again. I still can't risk you dying on me. I brought you into all this and it is on me that you walk out of this unscathed. We are going to be meddling with forces that have no presence and people that will be after me which ultimately means they will be after you." It was a silent promise I made to myself when I brought this girl into all this. Too many lives have already been taken because of my cause, the least I can do is try and save the ones that can be saved while I have the chance of saving.
"Our only deal was that you help me bring back Nick and I help you with the visions. There was nothing about me coming under your protection." She sure is stubborn. But she has helped me a lot and I have to convince her nicely. "And I walked into this knowing fully well what I was getting into. If you are worried I'll give out all I know about you then don't worry I am spell protected to not do that. Before I spill anything I'll die from that spell. Being involved in some sort of torture plan for the king of the city I know this day can come so I came prepared."
"I remember about the deal. And look." making my way to my bag I searched for the box and handed it out to Abelia once I found it "I found these and the spell is also not far I just need a few days. Please just try to understand that I can't keep worrying about you while I am out practically on a war with the council. You are no good to be dead or captured." I could see her contemplating her ways and waited for her reply but she was really in thought, perhaps just a little bit more convincing and she would agree.
"You know how important this is for me and not just me but all of the supernatural population. Plus you know this may even be your comeback at the council too. Now I know you said that you didn't want revenge but at least you can sit back and watch them being brought down and do the little you can." She only helped with the visions because I was giving her the means to resurrect Nick, her witch mate who was killed by Raaky.
There was a prophecy that the witch line of Abelia and Nick mating together would be the most powerful witch line Sayonara has ever had. If you think of it, the insecurity and power hunger at all costs, runs in the Alesina family. Raaky being threatened by this prophecy killed Nick so there would be no offspring and the line would end right there. Not once did he think to make them allies given their history as friends.
Abelia tried to kill Raaky numerous times and each time she lost not just the war against Raaky but a loved one too. There came a time when Abelia finally decided she would bring back Nick from the other side and they would both live in secret until both are powerful enough to stand up.
She decided a long time ago that killing Raaky was no revenge. Making him watch his downfall on the other hand was more tempting. Seeing as he is all arrogant and practically speaking, a spoiled rich brat.
"Alright but once I bring back Nick, I will reside with him outside the boarders of the city." our motives matched to a great extent and maybe that's the reason she can understand my thousands of years old rage.
"Thank You so much I really appreciate it. Now shall we start if thats all sorted." I planted myself on the chair again and looked at her grinning.
"Sure"
*_*
"I told you. I will do it" I said narrowing my eyes at him. He was a pain in the ass.
"Alright lets see if you are as you speak yourself to be" he climbed down those last few steps of the stairs and walked over to me with that cocky smirk of his that I only could wish to slap off.
He was dressed like a million dollar and I was impressed. You watch those movies about apocalyptic worlds and in walks the male protagonist looking as if right out of some competition where they choose the winner for who is the sexiest. Even with their dirty sweaty clothes they still manage to look unrealistically amazing and save the world on top of that. That is what I felt when I saw Raaky. Those sand brown narrow pants and that black t-shirt clinging to his amazingly built body. To top it all like a cherry on a big birthday cake, he wore a leather jacket taking the shape of his body.
However I could clearly see that the present I sent earlier had already been received. His eyes were red like sleep deprivation red yet still, the irises changed color at a constant rate, and even a single whiff of wind around him, has been provided a reaction by him. He is at full alert. How I felt internally happy knowing my plans were really working.
I was not like this always. Deriving fun out of a person's misery was something left out of my upbringing. The little upbringing that my parents did and the rest the cruel world. So yes I did not give too shits about anything anymore. It was my turn now.
I felt myself shifting uncomfortably under his gaze and quickly retrieved my usual confident stance.
I was currently seated crossed legged-all thanks to my mother's constant nagging at how I sat like a man and needed to sit like a lady-on one of the chairs surrounding one of the many small tables. A lot of benders were looking at me like I was some species' out of this world. This place was like a cauldron, an open space surrounded by the building and a set of stairs leading to the bottom from where Raaky came down. No doubt this place was amazing. Rich with history of the olden days, though showed every bit of power and authority. Raaky had cleverly kept this place, I could spot things even from the time when I was a child. Small small things all around the mansion, it was all there.
"You'd have to find a stone" his cocky smile was telling me that this was not as easy as it seemed and I stopped the snort that I was about to give out and make a fool of my self.
"And....?" I continued for him to follow. He walked right in front of me approximately two steps apart from me and spoke in a hushed voice. Sad, even surrounded by so many of his men he couldn't trust anybody around him.
"This stone is a piece of one complete rock and it is hidden somewhere in Sayonara. You have to find it and then you have to tell us what part is it of the rock and what does it signify. This stone is really important, it was broken off from the rock about 1000 years back like all the other parts of the rock and this part of the rock was hidden somewhere in this city by its previous owner. I couldn't find it lets see if you can." during his talk he had grown more closer to me there transpired something touchable between us almost as if I could see it, this close proximity was making uneasy so I moved away from him.
"What does this stone look like. Does it have a name?"
"Its semi red and semi purple though its not shiny or sparkly so it is hard to find. And its name is ObzaPiap. This is the only information I can provide after all its a challenge." He turned smiling like a devil and walked over to the bar on my left side pouring wine in two glasses. A bit early in the day, surely the doing of certain unsettling dreams.
"What do you plan to do with it?" My curiosity taking the best of me, I asked him.
"You just have to find it don't worry about what I'll do with it." his back still facing me as he spoke but the change in his tone didn't go unnoticed by me.
"I will find it but I need 24 hours." Obviously he is too lazy to do his own work so he is handing it over to me. I certainly am no fool to give him the stone without knowledge of what he would do with it.
"Its not an easy task that you can finish in 24 hours. I must warn you though, its told that the creature that guards the stone is vicious. It moves like an Assassin and kills in the most brutal ways. You would have to trick it in order to take the stone."
Taking the glass from Raaky I dunked all of its contents down my throat even though my throat didn't receive it in the most welcoming way I wouldn't give him the satisfaction of watching me wince. He raised an impressed brow at me.
"Then I'll kill the creature. Problem solved" I turned and walked out of the main gate to his mansion ignoring the weird looks of all different species of creatures Raaky had gathered in his home. Why do these people even live here. It is one stop shop for assholes?
These were low ranked benders most of them possessed only one element being class four and a very few had two. When I arrived here most of them were guarding the mansion, some were busy in different works and in one open area some were practicing bending fights. Well atleast they were being useful. So I sat in front of them and watched the fight practices till Raaky finally graced us to his presence telling me that there was still time to back down if I didn't want to do this.
"I'll be here be back here in 24 hours or less. Keep the city's council's declaration at hand." I told him before I was out of the gate.
Taking my cellphone out I dialed Abelia who picked on the second ring.
"Abelia I need you to locate a stone. Where are you?" I asked her.
"At the burial land of the Whitmore's"
"Stay there I'm on my way." Why was she there, didn't I tell her to go to the Whitmore mansion.
*_*
I arrived at the open field shortly and found Abelia standing near a grave. Its was Abelia's mothers grave. Though I didn't understand why was her mother's grave in Whitmore land. However I did not touch the topic as more pressing matters were at hand and I was on a clock.
"Abelia he wants me to find a stone. Its called the stone of ObzaPiap, looks like a dull shade of purple and red. Can you locate it? Its in the city." She nodded and motioned for me to follow.
We reached Abelia's place shortly and she started the spell. "Eva this stone is cloaked."
"Obviously its cloaked would be too easy if it wasn't and that is why I need you to give me something, anything that can help and I can bring to help you, help me." It was obvious that the stone would be cloaked or else how would Raakay feed his ego without watching me fail miserably at the task he couldn't do.
"I need something as a medium. As in something powerful enough to at least give me a radius of a place where the stone is; if not its exact location. It can be anything like....like the rest of the stone or maybe someone who had touched the stone. Even the blood of a closely related person to stone." she hoisted herself up and looked at me expectantly.
"Even if Raakay has the rest of the stone why would he give it to me. That cuts the rock out of option. And according to Raakay the stone is hidden since it has been broken off from the rock, about a thousand years back. I don't think history is so precise that it will provide me of the knowledge of who touched the stone. That leaves us with related blood option. Which reminds me of something my mother told me. In the olden days, very old days people used to mark stones with birthing blood to celebrate the birth of a child The birthing blood would be period blood. And they named the stone whatever the child was named. Then again we know the name of the broken only not the whole rock." I tried to do the math that really just put more questions in.
"That is disgusting, remind me to never touch that stone. How will you find out who is related to the stone let alone get their blood." She was right. How? Soon an idea hit me.
"If the stone is so famous maybe I can search in books or maybe in the historical artifacts of the city, you can search with your spells contacting the spiritual world and asking for help. We know the name right."
"Alright but I will try to tap the cloaking first and for that I need your blood as power medium. My magic is not powerful enough but with your added bending powers maybe I can tear off the cloaking".
"Sure" I pushed my palm forward.
