~Saturday Night~
“That's crazy!” Dara giggled as she sat on the bed, watching me dress up for the shift dinner night,
“Mr Werner was shaking like an old man peeing in his pants!” Dara laughed again, enjoying every bit of my narration even though we had talked about it more than three times.
“Adele must have him by the collar.”
“Obviously,” I retorted sharply, “I guess being rich solves a lot of things.”
Dara shook her head, “I think luck is on your side. How can a revenge plan be so easy and thrilling?”
“I know.”
“How much longer are you going to keep the chauffeur waiting?” Dara asked, making me glance at my golden– I mean, Adele’s golden wristwatch.
“five more minutes.”
The shift dinner was scheduled to begin with a mingling, and then there was a sit-down meal for every family.
I was stalling to skip the thirty-minute socialization. I was scared I'd blow my cover if I was thrown into the high-profile society.
Who wouldn't be?
After successfully stalling for five more minutes, I did a 360 turn,
“How do I look?”
“Perfect!”
I was wearing a floor-length evening gown that hugged my curves in the right places.
The dress was crafted from a jewel-toned emerald green silk that shimmered in the light.
It had a high-slit, extending from mid-thigh, and adding a touch of sophistication and allure.
When I was out of my apartment, I met the chauffeur waiting patiently and without further ado, we hit the road.
It was only a fifteen-minute drive from my house to the venue but this evening, it wasn't.
The traffic congestion was almost unbearable and I wished I had left home earlier.
My lateness was extended by another thirty minutes, making it an hour.
I was nervous as hell but I tried my best to look relaxed. The guards didn't seem to need my name or ID as they all curtsied the moment I walked into the lobby.
The door was opened for me, I sauntered in with my head up but shrank mentally at what I was met with.
Tardiness didn't do me any good because it only brought every eye in the room boring into my face and I could almost feel the holes.
The room fell silent and everyone's jaw literally dropped to the floor.
For a while, I stood there awkwardly until my father, Adele's father, came up to me with a big smile spreading across his face.
“Sweetheart,” he stressed the word and walked me to what I could call our family’s table.
I was grateful for that rescue.
At our table was seated a woman with a sheepish smile who I recognized as Margaret, Adele’s stepmom, and a young man who looked equally surprised, Cole, Adele’s stepbrother.
Though the speech continued, I could still feel eyes boring into my back.
The banquet hall radiated power and extravagance and I hated to admit that I loved how I stole the show for a moment.
The speech didn't take much longer, It was followed by applause and people started mingling… again.
Adele’s father who couldn't take his eyes off me stood up, pulling me up with him and then giving me a big fatherly hug.
A kind of hug I've never received in my twenty-seven years alive.
I embraced him, sinking myself in the warmth of his hands.
I never had a father to call my own.
It was an opportunity to feel the love of a father, he patted my hair and whispered;
“You'd be as good as dead if you didn't show up today, dirty little w***e,”
I blinked, my eyes almost popping out of my head. Adele was known to be her Father's princess, and the media was full of their unbeatable father-and-daughter relationship.
“I would forgive your tardiness since you made such a grand entry but know that your unreasonable break is over.”
He pulled away and cupped my cheeks, chills ran down my spine seeing his wide smile again.
How dreadful!
A tall blonde man in a black suit, holding a champagne glass who came over to us was a red herring.
“Sweetheart, meet Jefferson, he's the owner of CT information. Jefferson, Adele, my daughter,” Father introduced.
“I’ve heard a lot about you. You look stunning,” He kissed the back of my hand, his eyes roaming my body for a rather long time.
“She’s such a beauty, isn't she?” Father chipped in, placing a kiss on my forehead.
Oh, I didn't like it!
Especially because he proceeded to peck my both cheeks and then he was about to kiss the bridge of my nose when he suddenly jerked me away.
A frown crossed his face as he spoke loudly enough for everyone to turn their heads.
“This is not my daughter!”
