Ties and Truth

Ethan’s footsteps echoed lightly against the marble floor as he stepped into the quiet mansion. The evening air outside had been cool, but inside, the warmth carried a weight — a reminder of the conversation he’d been avoiding. His mother was waiting in the living room, seated on the couch with the poise of a queen, her sharp eyes catching his the second he entered. “You’re late,” she said, her tone clipped. “Ethan, we need to talk about your future. I can’t keep introducing you to respectable women if you won’t take any of them seriously.” He lowered himself into the seat across from her, fingers loosening the buttons at his cuff. “Mother,” he replied evenly, “what’s the essence of building a family where there’s no empire to protect them? No legacy to find them?” Her brows furrowed. “You already have a legacy—” “No,” he cut in gently, but firmly. “I have a business. A family is more than a surname and a house. I won’t bring someone into my life if I can’t give her a kingdom to stand on.” Silence hung between them, and in it came a flicker of his past — a flashback of a much younger Ethan, standing by his father’s grave. He remembered the murmurs of pity from guests, the weight of an empty name, and the way his mother’s hand trembled as she signed documents to keep the business afloat. That day had carved a vow into him: never to marry until he could give his family more than just a name. He stood, ending the conversation before it spiraled. “Goodnight, Mother.” --- Annabelle shut her apartment door behind her with a tired sigh. The scent of lavender and vanilla candles wrapped around her, easing the sharp edges of her day. From the kitchen, her roommate and best friend, Clara, peeked out with a mug in hand. “Long day?” “You have no idea,” Annabelle muttered, kicking off her shoes . “My boss is a walking storm cloud. And my heels are officially weapons of torture.” Clara laughed, handing her the mug. “Here. Drink this before you collapse.” Annabelle took a sip, letting the warmth settle in her chest. In Clara’s presence, the world always felt a little lighter. They talked about small things — work gossip, weekend plans — but beneath Annabelle’s smile was the lingering thought of a certain man with cold eyes and an unreadable expression. A man who seemed to walk into her life like a storm she hadn’t prepared for.
