– Brittany’s POV
Alice’s sobs were like little cracks in glass — sharp, fragile, and bound to shatter completely.
“Alice, what happened?” I asked, hurrying to her. My voice was soft, but my curiosity? Oh, it was screaming.
“Your best friend…” she sniffled, wiping her tear-streaked cheeks, “he broke up with me… in the most horrible way.”
I widened my eyes. “Why would he do that?” I asked. I wasn’t really surprised, though. Sam’s heart was a grenade — always ready to explode in someone’s face.
“I don’t know. He said I’m… a pest in his life.” Her voice broke again, and fresh tears spilled down her face.
“Oh, baby, come here.” I pulled her into my arms, rocking her gently. “I’m really sorry for what he did. Don’t worry — I’ll talk to him. Maybe he’ll come to his senses and realize you’re the one for him.”
“Thank you, Brittany. You’re the best,” she whispered against my shoulder.
I smiled, brushing her hair back. “It’s nothing. Now, let me get to class… we’ll talk later.”
Or never, I thought to myself as I turned away, biting my lip to keep from laughing.
By the time I entered the classroom, Sam was already smiling like he’d just won a trophy. I slid into the seat beside him.
“Dude, that was brutal,” I said, shaking my head. “You spoke to her like you were talking to the devil himself.”
“I needed her to know there’s no coming back,” Sam replied, grinning.
“That’s why you called her a ‘plum pig’?” I stifled a laugh. “You’re insane.”
He threw an arm around my shoulder. “I know.”
“So… how long for Sandra?” I asked.
“A week and two days.”
I blinked. “Why so short?”
“She’s a bad kisser. What am I supposed to do with a bad kisser?”
I laughed out loud. “Wow. Axel has really trained you well.”
“And I love it,” he said with a smirk.
Class dragged on until the dismissal bell finally rang. Sam and Sandra walked out hand in hand, looking like a picture-perfect couple. I knew better.
I drove straight to Sam’s house, where Charlotte ran into my arms the moment I stepped out of the car. We kissed briefly, and then I spotted Axel on the balcony, grinning like the devil.
“Axel, you’re a bad teacher,” I teased.
“What do you mean?”
“You trained your brother to be a heartbreaker.”
He laughed. “He’s my brightest student.”
“Oh, brightest in heartbreaks,” I added with a playful shove.
A few minutes later, Sam’s car pulled in. Sandra was still clinging to him.
“See that girl? She’ll be gone in nine days,” I said.
Axel chuckled. “That long? I’d give it three.”
“Holy Christ, your heart is in hell,” I said, laughing.
Sandra joined us on the balcony, greeting everyone politely. Sam introduced her like she was a rare gem. Axel pretended to be impressed.
Just then, Charlotte tugged on my hand. “Brittany, come inside. I have something to show you.”
I smiled. “Sure, lead the way.”
