CHAPTER SIXTEEN We soon arrived at the Castle Grau and found ourselves in the courtyard. The carriage drove up to the doors so the baron could avoid the sun as much as possible. He allowed us to exit first before he stepped out. The direct sun shone down on him and I beheld a faint wisp of smoke rise from his person. The baron took a few long steps into the shade of his castle and the fog disappeared, though the smell of burnt flesh lingered. Grau adjusted his heavy coat and smiled at me. “You needn’t be worried, Miss Harrow. Such brief time in the sun does not cause any lasting effects on my person.” We sauntered into the foyer and the soothing air in the castle reminded me that I hadn’t had a wink of sleep for quite a while.
