CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE The fireballs cast a flickering light on our surroundings, and the glow also revealed deep shadows set against the ruined walls. Those were no ordinary shadows, however. They had the shapes of people. Men and women stood against the foundations. Small children and the bent forms of the old stood with them. In the background behind the citizens stood many soldiers bearing shadowed swords and caps. There were dozens of the creatures just standing in the darkness facing us. I couldn’t see their eyes, but I could feel them on me. “Sir!” one of the guards shouted as he stabbed a trembling finger at the shadows. Voss took a step back and his eyes were wider than they should have been. “Mein Gott. . .” Even Siegel’s overbearing confidence was shaken by the shadows
