Chapter 4

“You are hereby sentenced to seven years in prison for possession of firearm and burglary,” The judge's words resounded in Kira's head as she was lead out of the courthouse by the bailiff. Kira didn't know how to feel, she knew what she did was wrong and she had brought shame on herself and her family. Her father hadn't liked her before and now she was certain he would even hate her more. She'd looked around the courthouse, looking to see if she could find Daniel, but he was nowhere near. A part of Kira felt betrayed and abandoned, but she'd been reminded herself that it was risky for him to show up in court, that her father might find out and only God knew what he would do to Daniel. Kira's eyes were glued to the handcuffs that held her wrists, the same thing on her leg, she was given an orange coverall. The weight of shame and regret sat heavily on her shoulders and she couldn't shake it off. The court process was so fast, the person she'd stolen from had big connections and the man wanted to make sure someone who tried to mess with him paid for it. If there was one thing she could go back in time and change it would be thinking of a better option than stealing. The one time she'd tried to do it, she was going to prison. for it. She hated herself for resorting to evil. Though her mind was a mess, it occasionally drifted to Daniel, if he was safe, she didn't mention his name during the trial or to the lawyer. She didn't want to mess with his dream of becoming big in the tech world. “Stop!” She heard a voice and turned to look in the direction of the voice. Her eyes were blurry, so she blinked rapidly to clear her vision and her blood instantly went cold when she saw her father. He had a look of disappointment back at the court. Even if Kira would always call him selfish and wicked, this time she knew she was wrong. She'd feel disappointed if her child did what she just did. The bailiff stopped and so did Kira. “What did you want to use that money for?” Her father didn't come to see her while she was in jail. She knew why. Anger had consumed him, and his hatred towards her had intensified. She didn't even expect to see him in the courthouse. Her step-sister never came. Kira swallowed, she didn't know what to reply to her father. “What did you want to use that money for? And don't tell me that orphanage bullshit,” Of course, Kira used to donate a good amount of her earnings to the orphanage when she didn't give Daniel after she learned that her mother was an orphan. “It's…the Truth,” Kira swallowed hard. “You're not ready to talk? Have fun in prison then.” “Dad…” Kira and her father were shocked when the words left her mouth. She told herself a man who deserved to be called a dad was one who loved his child. He was her father regardless but Kira would never know why her father hated her. As much as she liked to push it away sometimes, it was the hard truth she had to face. “What?...” He snapped through his teeth. “I'm sorry,” Kira murmured, a tear slipped down Kira's eyes but it did little to shake Kira's father out of his intense hatred towards his daughter. “Suit yourself,” He walked out, and Kira watched his back in the hallway. “Move!” The bailiff pushed her harshly from the back she almost tripped. More tears as she continued walking. Her father had always told her that she was useless and she just proved him right. °• Two weeks later. “You've thrown up a million times today, why don't you go see the doctor?” Kira's cellmate told her. Kira held her stomach, washing her face, “Maybe I should now,” Kira replied. After drying her face she informed the warden that she wanted to see the Doctor, she initially refused and told Kira to get back but after so much begging she left Kira to go. The doctor ran a few tests on Kira, she felt weak, tired, and hazy but she tried to keep her eyes open. “Ms. Kira, you're pregnant, You know who the father is? In your record it doesn't say you're married or engaged,” Kira felt like someone poured a bucket of ice on her as she laid on the bed. “What?!” Kira's eyes flashed with horror. “I said you're pregnant, do you know who is responsible?” Kira felt numb. She wasn't expecting the news and it hit her in a very bad way. Like she'd been hit by a truck. Five minutes passed in a blur and Kira was yet to say another word. “I'm guessing you don't know who the father is? We'll contact your family, you can leave now,” The Doctor said a little too harshly and Kira got up from the bed and left.
