REVELATION

"I do not care about her office job right now," I interrupt, pointing a finger at the smiling man in the photograph with his arm wrapped tightly around her waist. "Who is the guy standing next to her?" "That is the problem," Luca sighs, swiping his finger to pull up a business article from a major financial newspaper. "She is officially engaged to that man, and his name is Mark Hayes." I read the bold headline under the photograph and feel a cold, hard knot form in my gut. "He is the sole heir to Hayes Financial, which means his father is Arthur Hayes," Luca adds, leaning his elbows on the bar and dropping his voice to a grim whisper. "They are billionaires, Sandro, and they own half the real estate in the financial district." I know the Hayes family reputation very well because they own half the politicians and judges in the state, using their massive wealth to control the local government. Arthur Hayes is a ruthless corporate shark who crushes small businesses for sport, and his son Mark is known for being a spoiled, arrogant prick who uses his trust fund to buy whatever he wants. I frown down at the tablet, trying to reconcile the polished, smiling woman in the photo with the barefoot, destitute girl who just confessed she had zero dollars to her name. "If she is engaged to the heir of a billion-dollar financial empire, why is she stranded in an industrial park wearing a soaked dress with no money to pay for a cheap motel room?" I ask, genuinely baffled by the contradiction between her public profile and her current reality. "Rich people have their own kind of twisted problems, Sandro, and maybe she just decided to run away from the pressure of the wedding," Luca suggests, rubbing his tired eyes. "Maybe they got into a bad argument tonight and she stormed out to prove a point." "No, it is much worse than a simple argument," I disagree, shaking my head as I push the tablet back toward him across the wet wood. "She is a high-society runaway, but she was looking at me with the eyes of an abused, starved animal." I remember the specific way she held her body against the door in my office, shrinking her frame down to make herself as small and unnoticeable as possible. Women who are merely angry at their wealthy fiancés do not flinch at shadows or assume every offered glass of water is a trap designed to enslave them. Mark Hayes might have a massive bank account and a pristine public image, but I know exactly what kind of monster he is behind closed doors because I recognize the damage he caused. He systematically isolated her from her friends, stripped away her financial resources, and broke her spirit so she would never have the strength to fight back or leave his side. "She told me he drained her accounts tonight and took everything she earned over the last three years, leaving her with absolutely nothing so she would have to crawl back to him," I tell Luca, feeling the violent urge to punch something solid start to simmer in my veins all over again. "Well, the bastard is not waiting for her to come crawling back on her own," Luca says, his expression turning pale as a loud notification suddenly pings on the tablet. Luca taps the screen quickly, minimizing the social media pages to pull up an active police scanner alert tied into our local precinct system. A wall of red text scrolls across the digital display, listing active warrants and high-priority bulletins for the city patrols. I stare at the flashing alert, watching Chiara's full name and height pop up on the police dispatch board along with the license plate number of an old sedan. Mark is already using his vast wealth and political connections to hunt her down, turning the local police force into his own personal tracking dogs. "Sandro," Luca whispers, the tension in his voice making the quiet bar feel incredibly dangerous. He points his finger at the glowing red text on the screen, verifying the nightmare unfolding in real time. "Mark Hayes just reported her car stolen and flagged all her ID cards," Luca reads, looking up from the tablet to meet my eyes with absolute dread. "If she steps outside, she's going to be arrested."
