"Beta Lucas." the voice responded as Furrey unlocked the bathroom door.
Beta Lucas kept his back straight and gazed downward to show his sign of respect to Furrey.
"You don't have to do all of that here in the school premises, but anyway, welcome Beta Lucas. It's been over 28 months since we last met."... Furrey grinned sheepishly at his assistant.
"And why did you mask your scent?" he asked.
"I hid it to protect my identity from the unknown energy and to stay undercover in the school, as the king asked me to,"Lucas explained.
"Hmmm," Furrey breathed.
"I felt a strange energy this afternoon during our chemistry practical in the laboratory. Something wasn't right. I felt so uneasy, but I couldn't place it. This is a confirmation of what you told the king about what you experienced two weeks ago," Beta Lucas said with a frown.
Furrey hummed in thought, "There might be things going on in the school we are not aware of, Interact more with the students in case there are rumors or news floating around." I'll do the same so we might get clues."
Beta Lucas nodded in agreement as Furrey changed into his uniform and they both exited the locker room to their lecture rooms.
Furrey entered the crowded dining room, surrounded by the mouth-watering aroma of freshly prepared dishes. It had been three years since he last ate with his classmates in the dining room.
Mr Maxwell's instructions lingered in his mind: "Catch up with your classmates on what you missed during your basketball competitions and get enough rest. I told your teammates the same thing earlier while you were in the bathroom. And do not let what happened on the basketball court happen again. You can always come to me or any of your teammates to discuss what you are going through. We are one and we care. You can take your leave now," he had said.
"Yes coach." Furrey replied as he left the coach's office.
"This little brained human thinks his mind can understand everything happening in their world even if I explain to him? I don't blame him, I blame the out-of-vogue laws binding my blood." Furrey sneered as he headed towards the dining room.
Furrey's gaze swept across the room, taking in the faces of those he had rarely seen outside the basketball court. He noticed Beta Lucas at a nearby table, engrossed in conversation with a group of students.
"Lucas, in no time, had already become a social butterfly, effortlessly interacting with everyone." Furrey thought to himself.
Furrey approached the food counter and served himself a plate of steamed curry rice, grilled chicken, and a bottle of water.
As he settled into an empty seat, the students cast glances at him, intrigued by the towering figure who rarely interacted.
Furrey focused on his meal, avoiding the admiring looks. Suddenly, he noticed the room's energy shifted. His wolf, Greygo whispered in his mind, 'Mate.' The word resonated, causing his heart to skip a beat. He looked around, attempting to figure out who the person might be, but there was no one.
'Look up, she is here, my Mate.' Greygo whispered again.
Then he spotted two girls approaching his table. One had tanned skin, an oval face, and wavy black hair. She was stunning, no doubt, but it was the other girl who captured his attention. Her skin was light, almost translucent, and her eyes had a depth he couldn't understand. She walked delicately, limping on one leg as if carrying secrets with her every step.
Furrey felt an electrifying intimacy as they passed by. It was something pure and soothing, something deeper than attraction or desire. His wolf stirred, urging him to take what was truly his, but Furrey hesitated.
Time seemed to pause as the pale girl's gaze met his. He could see the vulnerability in her eyes, fear concealed by strength. What is this feeling? He could not confirm, but every part of his being called for her.
All he knew was that fate had intertwined their destinies, and he was already immersed.
"Let all students come together in the main auditorium immediately after the lunch hour for special announcements and welcoming of the new students" the principal announced into the public address system.
Furrey joined the other students in the auditorium, trailing the two girls with his eyes as the students rushed into the large space. He spotted a vacant seat beside them in the back row while the other students settled down, some even fighting to sit in the front.
Some of the female students in the auditorium glanced at him with seductive smiles. The two girls next to him giggled and whispered softly as they peeped at him.
When the principal concluded her statement, Goblett got up to march forward to the podium along with the other new students who had not yet introduced themselves to the school.
'My mate.' Greygo mumbled.
"Hi,' Furrey uttered as he turned to face her.
"Hey Furrey," Attima whispered and giggled, her voice like a fragile melody.
Furrey gazed into her eyes, surprised. "How does she know my name? Does she know who I am?"
'She is so beautiful,' Greygo said, interrupting his thoughts.
I know Greygo, please quit interrupting me, he grumbled silently.
"I guess you are surprised I know your name," She said.
"My friend Goblett informed me about you, the most handsome and popular student in the school. She learned about you from the other swimming girls two weeks ago." She grinned and added, "She is crushing on you, by the way," as she glanced at her friend and the other new students who were gathered at the front.
"Why didn't you hear about me since it seems you've been in this school before her?" he asked.
She grudgingly responded, "I only hear other students in my class talk about the most proud boy in class three. I had no friend to tell me anything about you before she came into my life."
'Is she the one, your mate?' Lucas' mind linked him.
'Yes, she is the one. But she has no wolf, I cannot feel her.'
'That is strange, get to know her more Alpha.'
'She looks familiar…. Oh, she's my classmate,' Lucas said through the mind link.
"My name is Attima by the way," she said, extending her hand for a shake.
"Nice to meet you Attima," Furrey said as he accepted the handshake, feeling an electrifying warmth run through his palm.
Her hand felt so soft and thin as he held her. She smells like fruit and coffee as he inhales her scent.
"So the 'Mate Bond Theory' is true, I can feel it holding her hand. Furrey thought to himself.
Greygo grumbled under his skin at the closeness.
"Can we be friends for the sake of my friend who has a crush on you?" she asked as she released her hand from his clasp.
Greygo growled at the thought, not interested in any other closeness.
"On one condition, Attima. Let us meet up after closing hours at the basketball court, and you must not tell your friend or anyone about it."
Her amber eyes widened in confusion as she gave him a shy smile.
"It's fine by me, anything for my friend," she said.
"What are you trying to do, Alpha? Lucas asked through the mind link.
Keep off ! Furrey snapped through the link.
