CHAPTER 4
Draven’s POV
The air outside was biting cold, but inside, my body was a furnace. A fever of pure agony clawed at my insides, trying to tear its way out.
I stood on the veranda of my Chamber, the black fur of my robe heavy against my shoulders. I gripped a cup of coffee, the steam rising into the dim morning light, but it did nothing to soothe the fire in my veins. I was the Alpha King, the ruler of the Abyss, yet I was a prisoner to this burning curse.
A sharp knock echoed.
"Come in," I rasped, my voice like grinding stones.
Davey stepped inside, bowing low. "Good morning, Your Majesty."
"Greetings. Why are you here?" I demanded. I didn’t have the patience for pleasantries today.
"News from the human village, Sir. The tributes will arrive by the time the moon is full," he informed me, his eyes searching my face for signs of the beast.
I let out a harsh, bitter laugh. "Those rascals. They’ll throw always away their own kind just to save their pathetic skins, won't they?"
Rage boiled in my gut. I hated them. I hated their weakness, their superstitions, and the way they treated their own like trash. Every thought of that village felt like salt in an open wound. And I've swore to give them back every bitter cold agony that they will feel in their bones. Not after what they did to my parents and my kingdom.
"Tell the chief guard to bring them in the moment they arrive," I snapped, setting my coffee down with a bang.
"I will inspect the slaves myself."
"But my Alpha," Davey hesitated, "your presence is needed at the council meeting to present the new project proposals."
"The full moon is tonight!" I roared.
A surge of pain erupted in my chest like a volcano, making my vision go red. "I would rather lose my mind among those lowlife humans than sit through a meeting!"
Davey flinched. "Forgive me, Your Majesty. I will handle the council. Hopefully... hopefully these tributes will help stabilize your wolf."
He saw it. He saw the way my hands shook. Davey had been my right hand since childhood days, my only true friend. He knew when the beast was winning. Without another word, he bowed and hurried out.
I collapsed against the wall, clutching my chest. I should be used to the pain by now, but every full moon felt like being burned alive from the inside out. My wolf was growing more monstrous every day, fueled by the curse. Tonight, the beast wanted blood.
By the time I reached the throne room, the transformation had already begun. The night was growing thick, the moon turning a bruised, bloody red.
My wolf was screaming. It wanted to taste innocence. It wanted to tear through skin and paint the palace walls in crimson. I fought to stay human, but my body was betraying me.
Thick, green veins popped up across my arms and neck, pulsing like snakes. My scars burned a fiery red, and my claws began to itch, pushing against my fingertips. I didn't look like a king anymore. I looked like a nightmare.
In the throne room, the air was heavy with the scent of fear. My warriors wouldn't even dare to look at me. They knew one wrong glance meant death.
But then... There was her....
This girl. This tiny, fragile human.
She dared to raise her eyes. She dared to look at me in the face.… the monster without turning away. She even dared to interrupt me.
My lungs filled with a breath of pure fire. I wanted to wrap my fingers around her throat. I wanted to break her for her disrespect until she has no life left. How dare a low human stand against my command?
I lunged forward, my fangs bared, ready to graze her neck and tear her spirit apart. But as I got close, a scent hit me.
It wasn't the scent of a normal human. It was sharp, unusual, and pure. It sliced through the fog of my rage like a silver blade, trailing down my veins and resetting my brain.
I stumbled back, my heart hammering. The madness in my head suddenly went quiet. My eyes stayed glued to her, my mind spinning as I tried to understand what had just happened.
I forced the shock down, masking it with a sneer as I sat back on my obsidian throne. I could feel her bravery radiating off her, and it drove me insane. She was trying to be a hero.
"You said you would take the other slave's punishment?" I growled, my voice echoing off the stone walls. "Fine. You will serve me your blood. You will serve me yourself. And when I am done, you will be tossed to the pack to entertain them."
I watched her. I wanted to see her spirit snap.
"Strip, now!" I howled into the silence.
The word was a command, laced with the power of an Alpha. I felt the air shift as she froze. I saw the terror finally flood her face, her body trembling like a leaf in a storm. A cruel smirk pulled at my lips. She needed to know who I was. She needed to know that in the Abyss, I was the only god.
"Ple...ase," she stuttered, her voice breaking. Her knees hit the cold floor with a thud. Tears began to stream down her face, hot and fast. "Please, my King..."
“You know I'm not asking? And you wouldn't want me repeating myself! " I snapped. “I want to see you raw!”.... In that moment, I saw her legs give out. Her strength vanished, replaced by a raw, naked terror that somehow excites my beast in triumph.
Her knees hit the cold floor with a thud that echoed through the silent hall. She curled into herself, and tears began to stream down her face, hot and fast, dripping onto her trembling hands.
She sobbed, looking around the room like she could find salvation hidden somewhere in the deep shadows of the night, her small frame shaking with a pain so deep it filled the room.
She was begging for mercy, but I turned my heart to stone; I didn't even blink or move.
This was only the beginning of her nightmare.
