Something Is Starting

Luna didn’t sleep. She kept replaying the same words over and over in her head. I was told to stay away from you. Not “I chose to.” Not “I didn’t like you.” Told. Like she had been a problem someone needed to control. Like her entire life had been arranged around rules she was never allowed to see. It made her angry. But underneath the anger… there was something worse. Curiosity. She hated that part the most. Because curiosity meant she was starting to care about answers she wasn’t supposed to want. And Noah Nightfang was the center of all of it. By morning, she had made a decision. She was done waiting. Done being told to stay out of things. If Noah knew something, she was going to force it out of him. One way or another. She found him near the training grounds. Of course she did. Noah always moved like he owned space, even when he wasn’t trying to. He was talking to two other wolves, but the moment Luna approached, his attention shifted. Instantly. The others noticed too. Silence followed. Luna didn’t hesitate. She walked straight up to him. “We need to talk.” One of the wolves awkwardly stepped back. Noah didn’t look surprised. Just tired. “You shouldn’t be here,” he said. “That’s becoming your favorite sentence,” Luna replied. A flicker of something passed in his expression. Not amusement. Not irritation. Something more restrained. Careful. The other wolves left. Noah turned slightly toward her. “Luna—” “No,” she cut in. “You don’t get to say my name like that and walk away again.” His jaw tightened. “You’re making this harder than it needs to be.” Luna laughed once. “Harder for who?” Silence. That silence again. Always the same pattern with him. Luna stepped closer. “I know you know something,” she said. “About me.” Noah didn’t answer immediately. That was answer enough. “I don’t know everything,” he said finally. “That’s not what I asked.” A pause. Too long. “I know enough to be careful.” Luna narrowed her eyes. “Careful about what?” Noah exhaled slowly through his nose. Like he was holding something back physically. “You’re not supposed to feel what you’re feeling yet.” Luna froze slightly. “What does that even mean?” He didn’t answer. Of course he didn’t. She stepped closer again. “Noah,” she said sharply. “Stop doing that thing where you act like every sentence is a secret code.” His eyes snapped to hers. For a second, something sharper appeared there. Warning. “Stop pushing,” he said quietly. “Or what?” she shot back. That landed. Something shifted in him. Not anger. Instinct. Like something inside him reacted before he could stop it. He took a small step forward. Luna didn’t move. Too close again. Always too close. “I’m not your enemy,” he said. She laughed bitterly. “That’s funny. Because it feels like you’ve spent my entire life acting like one.” Noah’s expression changed at that. Just slightly. Something cracked. Then— “I didn’t have a choice,” he said. Luna went still. That again. “That’s not an explanation,” she said. “I know.” “Then explain properly.” Silence. The air between them felt heavier than before. Noah looked away for a second. Like it physically hurt to keep looking at her. When he spoke again, his voice was lower. Strained. “It’s starting.” Luna frowned. “What is?” He hesitated. Too long. “Whatever is inside you,” he said quietly. That hit differently. Luna’s stomach tightened. “I don’t have anything inside me,” she said immediately. Noah looked at her. Long. Carefully. Like he was trying not to say the wrong thing. “That’s the problem,” he said. Silence dropped hard between them. Luna stepped back slightly. For the first time. Not fear. Confusion. “What are you talking about?” Noah shook his head once. “I can’t explain it to you.” “Try.” “I can’t.” Her patience snapped again. “You always say that.” “I know.” “Then why are you even here if you’re not going to tell me anything?” Noah’s hands clenched at his sides. For a moment, he looked like he was fighting himself. Then he stepped closer again. Too close. Not aggressive. Just… urgent. His voice dropped. “You need to trust me on this.” Luna stared at him. “That is the worst possible thing you could say to me.” Something flashed in his eyes at that. Pain. Real pain. And for a second, his mask slipped. “I didn’t want it to be like this,” he said again. Luna frowned. “What does that even mean?” He didn’t answer. Instead, he looked at her like he was seeing something she couldn’t see. Something changing. Luna suddenly felt it. A strange pressure behind her ribs. A quick pulse in her ears. Too loud. Too sharp. She blinked. “Did you feel that?” she asked quietly. Noah went still. His eyes locked onto her immediately. “Yes,” he said. That single word felt heavier than anything else he’d said so far. Luna swallowed. “What was that?” Noah didn’t answer. But his expression changed. From controlled… To worried. “Noah?” she pressed. He stepped back slightly. Just one step. Like distance was suddenly necessary. “It’s happening faster than I thought,” he said quietly. Luna frowned. “Stop saying things like that.” But her voice wasn’t as steady anymore. Because something inside her felt… awake. Not fully. Not clear. Just there. Like something moving under her skin. Noah looked at her again. Longer this time. And for the first time, he didn’t look like a bully. He didn’t look like an enemy. He looked like someone watching a door slowly unlock. And not knowing if what was behind it should ever be freed. “Luna…” he said quietly. Her name sounded different again. He stopped himself. Like he had almost said something dangerous. Something irreversible. Instead, he stepped back fully. “You need to go home,” he said. Luna stared at him. “Not until you explain.” His jaw tightened. “I can’t.” “Then I’m not leaving.” A pause. The air between them shifted again. And then— Noah’s eyes flicked past her shoulder for a split second. Alert. Sharp. Instantly tense. Luna noticed. “What is it?” she asked. Noah didn’t look at her anymore. “Something is here,” he said quietly. And this time— He wasn’t talking about her.
