SURVIVAL AND RESCUE Mathilda’s POV After watching the movie in strained silence, I retreat back into my cell. My legs feel heavier than usual, like they’re carrying all the fear I’ve been trying not to feel, all the things I keep forcing down so I don’t shatter. I kneel on the thin mattress, the fabric rough beneath my knees, and clasp my hands together so tightly my fingers ache. My lips tremble as I whisper into the darkness, afraid that if I speak any louder, my voice will betray how close I am to falling apart. “God… if you really help me get out of this, I’ll stop drinking coffee. I swear. I’ll go home this Christmas. I’ll listen to Ma more. I promise.
