UNEXPECTED ENCOUNTER

The moment I step toward the bed, I can already hear the change in her breathing. It’s soft at first, then uneven like she’s trying to quietly catch her breath but failing miserably. It’s a reaction I’m used to triggering, but something about hers makes me slow down. Makes me pay attention.
Maybe it’s the way her chest rises too quickly.
Maybe it’s the way her fingers grip the sheets.
Maybe it’s the simple fact that it’s her.
I haven’t even touched her yet, but her body responds like it recognizes mine. And God help me… mine reacts the exact same way.
