Chapter 10: The Black Wood Files (appendix)

431 Words
To understand the weight of the debt, one must understand the objects that anchor it to our world. The following items were recovered from the wreckage of the Blackwood estate and are currently considered "Active Entanglements." 1. The Master Key (The Shard of Memory) Forged in 1944, this key is not made of brass or iron. It is a jagged sliver of the Original’s own physical form. It does not open physical locks; it opens the "eyes" of the house. To hold the key is to allow the Tenant to see through your own retinas. It is currently missing, believed to be in the possession of the New Anchor. 2. The 1986 Ledger A leather-bound journal kept by Chloe’s Great-Aunt. The pages are treated with a solution of salt and funeral lilies to prevent the ink from being altered by the "Other." It contains the only known map of the house’s shifting geometry. Warning: Reading the ledger aloud within ten feet of a mirror may result in "Reflective Lag." 3. The Mirror-Heart Dolls Found in the crawlspace during the final investigation. These dolls were crafted by the grandmother as "Placeholders." By sewing mirror shards over the hearts of these effigies, she was able to trick the Tenant into eating the "years" of the dolls instead of the family’s life force—for a time. The dolls are now inert, their mirrors cracked. 4. The Silver Pitcher A standard-issue hospital water pitcher, currently located in Room 402. It has become a Class-B conduit. Because its surface is curved, it distorts the Tenant’s image, making it harder for the entity to manifest fully. However, the liquid inside is now toxic, containing trace amounts of the "Black Oil" found in the Blackwood basement. 5. The Vellum Contract The Second Signature. This document is the legal binding of the bloodline. It cannot be burned, torn, or lost. If destroyed, it simply reappears in the Anchor’s pocket or under their pillow the following morning. The debt is no longer tied to a location; it is tied to a pulse. Chloe: A young girl forced into an ancient contract. The Original: An entity from the "Other Side" of the glass. Detective Miller: A man of logic facing an illogical world. The Mother: The previous Anchor, now broken by the weight. "Thank you so much for reading The Mirror's Debt.
