Chapter two
“I didn’t do it”
My voice sounded small even to me as the police pushed me toward the car
Nobody answered
Like they had already heard that line too many times before
“I said I didn’t do anything” I repeated, louder this time
Still nothing
The officer holding my arm tightened his grip slightly like I was just another case he wanted to finish quickly
But I wasn’t just another case
At least… I don’t think I was
Because none of this made sense
Not the knife
Not the girl
Not the way that man just disappeared like smoke
And definitely not the way they called my name like they already knew me
They opened the back door and pushed me inside
The metal was cold against my skin
The door slammed shut
And just like that
It felt like everything became real
I was in a police car
Handcuffed
Accused of murder
My chest tightened
This can’t be happening
Through the glass, I watched them move around, talking to each other, but I couldn’t hear anything clearly
Just bits and pieces
“…she’s the one…”
“…same pattern…”
“…we finally got her…”
My heart skipped
What pattern
What are they talking about
I tried to focus
Tried to think
But my head felt heavy
Like something was blocking my thoughts
Like there was something important I was supposed to remember
But couldn’t
The car door opened again
One of the officers got in beside me
The same one who called my name earlier
He didn’t look at me immediately
Just sat there quietly for a few seconds
Then finally
“You’re quiet” he said
I let out a dry laugh
“What do you want me to say?”
“That you didn’t do it”
I looked at him
“I didn’t do it”
He nodded slowly
“Of course you didn’t”
Something about the way he said it made my stomach twist
“You don’t believe me”
He turned his head slightly and looked at me
Not angry
Not even surprised
Just… certain
“I believe you don’t remember”
My breath caught
“What does that mean?”
He didn’t answer immediately
Like he was deciding how much to say
Then he sighed quietly
“This isn’t your first time, Amelia”
My heart stopped
“What?”
My voice came out almost as a whisper
He held my gaze this time
Steady
Unshaking
“You’ve been connected to three cases before this”
The world felt like it tilted
“No… that’s not possible”
I shook my head immediately
“I would know”
“Would you?”
His question hit harder than I expected
“Yes” I said quickly
“I’m not a killer”
“You said the same thing last time”
My chest tightened painfully
“That’s not true”
He leaned back slightly
“Same words”
Same reaction
Same confusion
My breathing became uneven
“No… no, you’re wrong”
“I wish I was”
Silence filled the car for a moment
Heavy
Uncomfortable
Then I spoke again
“Then why am I not in prison?”
If I’ve done this before
Why am I free
Why am I just walking on the street like nothing happened
His jaw tightened slightly
“Because every time…”
He paused
Like he didn’t like what he was about to say
“…the evidence disappears”
My heart skipped
“What?”
“Everything” he continued
“Witnesses change their statements, recordings get corrupted, files go missing”
My stomach dropped
“That doesn’t make any sense”
“Exactly”
He looked at me again
“And somehow, you always walk away”
My hands started shaking again
“This is crazy”
“I know”
“No, I mean it, this is insane, I’ve never killed anyone”
“You were holding the knife tonight”
“I didn’t even know it was in my hand!”
My voice rose without me meaning to
He watched me quietly
Like he was studying me
Trying to see if I was lying
But I wasn’t
At least… I don’t think I was
Then something hit me
That man
The one from the street
“He set me up” I said quickly
The officer frowned slightly
“Who?”
“The man, he was there, he”
“What man?”
I froze
My heart dropped
“What do you mean what man, he was right there!”
“No one else was at the scene when we arrived”
“That’s not true!”
My voice shook
“He was standing there, he was talking to me, he”
“Amelia”
His tone was calm
Too calm
“There was no one else”
Silence
Heavy
Suffocating
“No…” I whispered
That’s not possible
I saw him
I spoke to him
I know I did
Unless…
My head started hurting slightly
Sharp
Sudden
I shut my eyes tightly
Trying to think
Trying to remember
But everything felt blurred
Like my memory was broken
“Think carefully” the officer said
“Was anyone else really there?”
My breath hitched
Of course there was
I’m not imagining things
I’m not crazy
Am I
The car slowed down
Then stopped
I opened my eyes
Police station
My stomach dropped
The officer got out first
Then opened my door
“Come on”
My legs felt weak as I stepped out
Everything felt unreal
Like I was watching myself from outside
They led me inside
Bright lights
Voices
People moving around
But everything felt distant
Like none of it was real
They sat me down in a chair
Cold metal
Uncomfortable
One of them placed a file on the table
Thick
Too thick
My heart skipped
“What is that?”
No one answered immediately
The officer from the car stepped forward
Then slowly opened it
Photos
Reports
Documents
My chest tightened
“Take a look” he said
I shook my head immediately
“I don’t need to see anything, I already told you”
“Look”
His voice was firm this time
I hesitated
Then slowly
I looked
And my world shattered
Because every single file
Every single report
Every single case
Had one name written clearly across it
Amelia Carter
My breath became uneven
“No… this is wrong”
Then I saw the pictures
Different scenes
Different victims
Same pattern
And in every single one…
Something connected to me
A bracelet
A phone
My handwriting
My chest tightened painfully
“This isn’t real”
Then the officer flipped to the last page
And pushed it closer to me
My hands trembled as I looked down
And my breath stopped
Because this time…
It wasn’t just evidence
It was a photo
Of me
Standing at a crime scene
Holding a knife
Looking straight into the camera
