She found herself walking along with him, until the path had become rough and the sun had begun to set. He had initially beckoned her once his phone picked up and decided unharmed. He had guided her along all the while with an intrigued look on his face. Lots of questions. Most she answered in one word. Shy, cautious, he decided.
Gemma was both of those but also wanted to be the one asking questions, seeing it as a chance to get to know this handsome stranger she soon found out was called Lorenz but also this area which was new to her but to become home for a few months she found out the nearest supermarket. She found out the nearest bars. Not one she had asked but one he assumed she may want to know as a student. She let him think she was a sociable person, a drinker, but in all honestly she preferred a book in bed most nights.
They stopped. A metro sign. His way home he advised his tone mockingly sad. He added a pout for emphasis. His stubble was pretty attractive she swooned to herself. ‘Been lovely meeting you’ he stumbled in English. He knew the basics she could gather. He wasn’t much taller than her but she liked looking up at him, to see those eyes that always seemed to be having a different more mischievous conversation with her. Or maybe that was her imagination. He was probably being kind and nothing more. After all he was more than a few years older than her and she felt graced to be in his company as godlike attractive he was and she wasn’t the only person who thought so she gathere by the lustful states focused his way by others as they walked and talked. They could have flown along for all Gemma knew, her feet didn’t feel grounded and she really wasn’t as aware of her surroundings as she should be she scolded herself. One good looking man and you are acting silly again. His eyes flashed impatiently she could see as she struggled for words. This was Todd all over again she told herself. Her confidence wavered once more and she attempted a polite goodbye, eyes down, no fuss. His hand reached for her shoulder he said something she quite didn’t catch and suddenly she just wanted to go home. Except she couldn’t, she was here in Milan as wonderful and new as it was she felt naive suddenly at how time had got away talking to a man who probably just wanted to get home to his girlfriend. Her shoulders lowered she scooted off just as the tram arrived. She didn’t look back.
It didn’t take long to get home, so she wasn’t sure they had walked that far after all but they had talked at some length.
Back at her new home she met some others, one tall girl who resembled a pop star, big teeth, slightly too big to be real lips, bared midriff introduced herself as Trudy in an unmistakable American accent. She was warm though, super tactile and confided she too was homesick and Gemma didn’t want to judge too quick dispute the girls loud voice and hooting laugh. She still heard it now as she sat in her room eating the stale airplane sandwich as she had never made it anywhere for some dinner.
As promised she called her mum reassuring her all was ok before turning off her light. Her mind flutter through the events of the day and she dreamt of the handsome stranger Lorenz.
