Life had begun to settle into something peaceful for Jay Frank and Cherotich. Their days were no longer filled with uncertainty, but with a growing sense of belonging. The child’s laughter had become the heartbeat of their home, and for the first time, Cherotich allowed herself to feel safe. But peace, as they would soon learn, is often temporary. It started with small changes. Jay became quieter than usual. His calls grew shorter, his visits less frequent. At first, Cherotich dismissed it—he was probably busy, she told herself. After all, life didn’t stop just because love had found them. But deep down, something felt off. One evening, as she sat watching her child play, her phone buzzed. It was a message from Jay. “Sorry, I can’t make it tonight. Something came up.” Again. Cherotich stared at the message longer than she should have. The next time they met, she didn’t hide it. “You’ve changed,” she said, her voice calm but firm. Jay sighed, running a hand through his hair. “I’ve just been dealing with some things. It’s not what you think.” “Then tell me what it is,” she pressed. He hesitated. And in that hesitation, Cherotich felt her heart sink. “I just need some time,” he finally said. Time. That word echoed painfully in her mind. It was the same word that had once been used as an excuse before everything went wrong in her life. Cherotich nodded slowly, masking the storm inside her. “Okay,” she said quietly. “Take your time.” But as Jay walked away that evening, something inside her began to break—not loudly, not dramatically, but in a slow, silent way that hurt even more.
