Kathlyn dreaded Mondays. Was there anyone who did not? She detested that she would have to go to the office and force a smile towards random people. Was that even supposed to be in her job description? She was not sure. She hated this particular Monday more. She would have to face Adam Smith and she had no idea how she would do that without feeling the urge to snap his neck.
He did not call the entire weekend. Not even a beep. What sort of unrepentant moron did that to a lady? She straightened her peach colored gown and stood up straighter. She squared her shoulders, jutted her jaw out and felt an ounce of confidence course through her veins. Taking one last look in the mirror, she walked over to her handbag, grabbed it and walked out of the house.
“Good morning, Jess” She greeted walking into the office. Jessica looked up at her and offered her a cherry smile. She returned the greeting. Kathlyn made her way into her office before letting out the breath she had been holding. Muttering a small word of thanks, she settled on her office chair and prepared her mind for the day ahead.
The double glass doors of the office besides hers glided open. She pretended not to be aware that Adam just walked in. Instead, she typed rapidly on the keyboard, pretending to be responding to emails. Her office was separated from Adam’s by a thin, glass door which came as a surprise to her because it was not there on Friday. There was a tiny wooden door there instead. Jess informed her that Adam got it changed during the weekend.
Adam wrapped his jacket around the arm of his chair and settled on his chair. Kathlyn watched him disdainfully, hating how handsome he looked. Her chest ached that he did not as much as cast a glance her way. He opened his laptop and pinched his forehead before staring blankly at the laptop screen. He looked deep in thoughts. At this point, Kathlyn was curious. Her anger was slowly dissipating and being replaced by curiosity. She forced herself to focus on her work but she could neither stop her thoughts from straying to him nor her eyes. Frustrated, she rose up from her seat, grabbed a file on her table and her phone and made her way over to his office, pretending to have something for him.
She pushed the glass door open and walked in. Adam slowly lifted his hooded eyes and c****d an eyebrow at her in question. She moved closer to the table and dumped the file in front of him. He looked at the file and back at her in question.
“I printed out the details for your travel on Saturday. I thought you might need it” She informed. She had received a mail over the weekend telling her that she needed to prepare documents for a meeting in Georgia next weekend. Adam nodded dismissively. She turned around to go but stopped and turned to look at him again.
She was fuming, Adam could see it but he made sure to maintain the same bored expression he always wore. “How do you manage to sleep at night?” She hissed, unable to hold back the anger which was threatening to split her head in half. Adam tapped on his chin and lifted one eyebrow. “You text people for dinner and stand them up and decide to never call. Is that what you do when people reject your offer for s*x?”
“What are you blabbering about?”
She scoffed and rolled her eyes.
“Wow! You pretend not to know? Really? How much more despicable can you be?”
“I will not have you insult me, Kathlyn. What the hell are you talking about?” He snapped banging his fist angrily on the table. He looked on edge, like he was trying his best to not snap and he really did not want to be in the office today. That should have deterred Kathlyn but she was already on a roll.
“You sent me a message Friday night requesting that I go to dinner with you. Does that in anyway ring a bell to you?” She asked through clenched teeth. Adam tilted his head to the side as if in deep thought before shaking his head.
“No. I only sent a message apologizing for my attitude earlier in the day.”
“What do you mean ‘no’?” She ignored the last past of his sentence focusing only on his denial.
“I did not send such a message” He responded. Kathlyn’s head fell back in anger at his blatant denial. She unlocked her phone, opened the message icon and pointed her phone in his face to show him the message. He looked at the phone, reading through the message but maintaining a clueless face.
After reading, he looked up at Kathlyn and shook his head, maintaining the same expression. “Still have no idea about that” He maintained. Kathlyn’s mouth fell open in shock. She grabbed her hair and ran a hand through it.
“Is this your number?”
“Yes, it is.”
“Yet, you deny sending this message to me?”
“I stand on it.”
“How possible is it for you to not have any idea about this if this is your number?” She asked. Silence. She smiled victoriously, thinking that she had cornered him.
“You have the wrong guy” He blurted out after a moment of silence.
“You are a disgusting and pathetic liar.”
“Enough” He boomed standing up. His nose flared in anger and his pupils dilated. “You will speak to me respectfully. I am your boss.”
“You do not act like someone who deserves respect” She retorted.
“I said enough.” He fisted the table in anger causing it to rattle loudly. Petrified, Kathlyn took two steps backwards and averted her gaze from his. “You will accord me the respect I deserve. Next time you walk into my office to spew such trash about me, I will fire you without thinking too much about it. Out, now.” She jumped in fear and nodded her head quickly. She looked around the office and tried to walk out of the office when his voice stopped her. “By the way, this is your bloody CV not the file you should have brought.” He threw the file at her and cursed under his breath.
She was awash with humiliation. She bent down, picked the file, muttered an apology and skittered out of the office. Tears pooled in her eyes as she made her way back to her office. She dabbed the tears away with a piece of cloth and took in large gulps of air. Her eyes searched around the office before falling on Adam. He looked put together, did not seem like someone who just embarrassed her. How dare he?
The wave of anger which she felt earlier came back in triple folds. She wanted to walk over to him and land a slap across his face. She wanted to scream, thrash and curse at him but she could not do that. The only reason she tolerated him was because she did not want to get fired on the new job she just began.
She swallowed the embarrassment she felt and decided to put on her big girl panties. Despite how hurt and humiliated she felt, Adam was her boss. She could not risk getting sacked from this job too. That would mean her sleeping on the streets. She had to stay as far away as possible from him. She had to treat him the way a boss should be treated regardless of if it pleased her or not. She tolerated Maria, she could tolerate him.
The rest of the week, she behaved strictly professionally around Adam. She made sure to drop files on his desk before he arrived at the office and emailed him the ones he asked for without exchanging much words with him. She reduced her interaction with him to only office related topics and focused solely on her work. It almost drove her insane for reasons she could not fathom but she reckoned it would be better going insane from being professional around him to going insane from trying to stop herself from snapping his neck in half.
At the office, she had no friends. She went on lunch breaks alone and went back home alone. She did not want to have any friends and risk being a subject of office gossip; not like she already wasn’t. Two times that week, she heard ladies in the bathroom gossiping about how she was a lucky b***h who got to work directly with Adam. Before she got to know his personality, she would have agreed with them and considered herself lucky. The urge to walk into the bathroom and ask them to replace her was strong. Instead, she focused on washing her hands.
A notification popped up on her laptop screen showing that she had received an email. Her phone beeped almost immediately. She picked it up to see that she had received a message from Adam. Confused, she went through the message before groaning in annoyance. Adam had demanded her presence in the next fifteen minutes.
She glanced over at him but he was focused on whatever he was doing on his laptop. She cursed under her breath. ‘What if I come up with an excuse and avoid going into his office?’ She reasoned. ‘No. That would be too evident. C’mon Kathie, you can do this’. Her pep talk provided her with the motivation she needed. She rose up from her desk, straightened her skirt and strutted towards his office.
Adam pretended to concentrate on his work when he heard her walk in. He cleared his throat inaudibly and pretended to focus fully on what he was doing. The entire week, he noticed how she made efforts to stay away from him and it troubled him. He was attracted to her but he resolved to not make any moves on her. She would have to come to him herself. After what happened the last time he asked if she would have s*x with him, he reasoned it would be wise to let her say what she wanted.
“You sent for me, sir” She said. He stared up at her and back at his laptop.
“Are the files for the journey ready?”
Fuck! She had totally forgotten that it was Thursday and they had to travel the next day.
“I had them emailed to you this morning.”
“Great. Drop the file and leave” He ordered. Her nose scrunched in disgust but she obeyed his order and walked out of the office. He watched her walk away, feeling a hint of guilt and need tug at his heart. The guilt made his groin stir.
