Kathlyn walked into the restaurant and looked around the whole place in search of Adam. Her heart sank when she did not see him but she convinced herself that he might have gotten stuck in traffic. She made her way to the middle of the restaurant and chose a table which made it possible for her to sit facing the door. She looked at her wrist watch to see that it was only ten minutes past seven p.m. She chewed on her bottom lip nervously as she continued staring at the door.
A waiter dressed in a blue trouser and black dress shirt paired with a black tie walked up to her with a smile plastered on his face. His black hair was scattered in different directions showing that he had run his hands through it a couple of times; from frustration maybe.
“Good evening, Miss. How may I help you this evening?” She glanced up at him and internally shivered at the grin on his face.
“I have not gone through the menu yet. Can you come back in ten?”
“Sure. Take your time” The waiter turned around to walk away before she relaxed. She glanced at her watch again to see that it was twenty minutes past seven. She contemplated calling Adam to ask where he was but she did not know if that would be appropriate. She continued tapping her feet and looking at the door and at her wrist watch.
Her heart began racing when thirty minutes passed and she prayed that it would not be what she thought. She would not be able to bear it. She had read about it happening to people and heard Jasmine complain about it many times in the past. She would feel devastated if something like that happened to her. Maybe if she was with someone else, she could pretend like she was not hurt but she was all alone, dressed in the sexiest dress in her wardrobe because she thought she was coming to tempt Adam.
“Kathlyn, you are thinking too much. The man might just be stuck in traffic” She whispered to herself in consolation. The waiter came over again and she ordered for a bottle of wine and a bottle of water. Her order arrived ten minutes later and she began sipping the wine slowly.
Her heart dropped when she saw that it was eight p.m. already. She had been sitting there for an hour. Some of the people she met in the restaurant had gone. She tapped her phone nervously, contemplating if she should call or not. Deciding to damn the consequences, she picked up her phone and dialed Adam’s phone.
“The number you are calling is switched off” The electronic voice said from the other end. She looked at the phone and tried again. The same thing! She gritted her teeth in anger and hurt but tried to push the tears which were forming back. She looked around the restaurant, suddenly feeling like all eyes were on her.
She emptied the entire content of the bottle into her glass and downed it completely. After gulping the content, she rose up from the seat and picked up her handbag. She staggered out of the restaurant, cursing Adam loudly and ignoring the worried and curious stares shot her way. They were gossiping, she knew but she cared less. All she cared about right now was going back to the comfort of her bed and lying down.
She got back to her apartment in one piece, thankfully. She struggled to fish out her keys from her bag. She successfully found the keys after emptying the contents of the bag on the wooden floor. She picked them up one after the other and arranged them in her bag before struggling to insert the key into the key hole. She found her way into the house and threw her bag on the floor.
“Damn you, Adam. You could have insulted me at work and I would not mind. You are my boss, after all” She said angrily. She walked to the couch and laid down on it while mumbling under her breath.
She was aggravated. She was drunk and aggravated. She had put in so much effort tonight only to be disappointed. She wanted to search for Adam and tell him how much she hated him at this moment and how she never wanted to have anything to do with him anymore but she could not. His phone was switched off. How dare he? How dare he ask her out on a date and leave her like that? She was fuming.
She stood up and walked to where she dumped her handbag. She rummaged through it and brought out her cell phone. She hurriedly dialed Jasmine’s number and she was relieved when she picked on the first ring.
“You should be having hot s*x with your hot boss right now not calling your best friend” Jasmine said in amusement. The smile was wiped out of her face when she heard Kathlyn sobbing through the phone. “Kathie, is anything the matter? Why are you sobbing? Did he do something? Where are you, Kathie?” She bombarded. Kathlyn wiped her nose with the back of her palm.
“He stood me up, Jas. I sat waiting for him for over an hour but he did not show up” She responded.
“What? Did you try calling?”
“He did it on purpose. He wanted to embarrass and insult me for rejecting him at the office yesterday. Gosh! I am so stupid, Jas. How could I believe that he would actually want to go for dinner with me? I bruised his ego” She said sobbing loudly. A loud burp escaped her lips making her giggle then she went back to sobbing.
“You are drunk, Kathie. Where are you?”
“My apartment” She responded.
“Fine. I will be there in fifteen. Just be calm and wait for me, all right?”
“Okay” Kathlyn said obediently. Jasmine ended the call and ran around her room in search of something to wear. She threw an A-line, short, black, sleeveless gown on which she paired with nude sandals, got into her car and drove off.
Kathlyn was staring at the ceiling when Jasmine barged into the house. Her make-up had smudged all over her face and her hair was a mess. Her eyes travelled from the ceiling to Jasmine and the sobs which had died down surfaced again.
“Oh, Kathie” Jasmine exclaimed. She walked towards her and wrapped her in her arms, cooing her and encouraging her to cry and let out all the hurt she felt.
“I feel so horrible, Jas.”
“Oh, dear! You shouldn’t. You did nothing wrong. Adam is the asshole for doing something like this to you.”
“I seemed desperate. The things I said to him at the club might have made him think that I desperately want him. Perhaps that is why he is doing this to me” She said sadly.
“No. You were drunk, darling. Now, you will stop crying over some irresponsible big baby and go into the bathroom to freshen up. I will whip something for you to eat before you come back down” Jasmine offered.
“I am not hungry” Kathlyn whined. She wriggled herself free from Jasmine’s hands and walked over to the other chair. She curled herself up into a ball and continued staring at the ceiling.
“No, you won’t be this person. You will stand up, go freshen up and eat something. You will not turn into a miserable person because of a man who neither respects women nor knows your value” Jas said rising from her seat and walking over to Kathlyn. She shot her a pitiful look before pulling her up.
“But…”
“No ifs or buts” Jasmine said cutting her short. “Stand up.” Kathlyn pouted her lips and shook her head stubbornly. Jas crossed her hands over her chest and glared at Kathie. Her glare forced Kathie to roll her eyes and push herself up from the seat.
She lazily dragged her feet up the stairs and into her room while Jasmine got to making something for her to eat. Kathie got out of her clothes, leaving them lying on the floor and made her way to the bathroom. She sat on the floor, pulled her legs to her chest and stared into space. She felt used and devalued and she blamed herself deeply for it. She could not find it in her to put the entire blame on Adam. It was not his fault after all that she spewed trash to him at the club that night.
She did not deserve what he put her through though. Why send her a text, raise her hopes up and brutally dash them? Was she at fault for believing that he could actually be sorry for his attitude and really wanted to apologize? Maybe if she had not believed the text, she would not be in this situation.
“No” She said wiping her tears away aggressively and standing up from the bathroom floor. “No. I have to stop crying over someone as despicable as Adam. He doesn’t deserve it” She said. She turned the faucet on and let the water beat her back.
“He should feel pathetic for what he did to me today. He should be the one crying not me.” She turned the faucet off and tied a towel around her body before walking out of the bathroom. She got into her room and stared at her reflection in the mirror. She stared at herself for a while before gritting her teeth in annoyance. “Adam Smith, you will pay for embarrassing me” She swore.
