“What was it like growing up?” Kathlyn asked in a small whisper. She trailed her finger up and down his chest, drawing invisible lines. Adam’s hands held her waist firmly while he buried his face in her hair.
“The first few years were happy” He responded.
“And the other years?” She asked lifting her head up to stare at him. His eyes were shut but the erratic beat of his heart informed her that she was treading on dangerous waters. He exhaled before parting his lips.
“They were horrible. After the death of my father, everything went sour.” Kathlyn felt sad for him. She placed her hand on his chest, feeling his heart beat and breathing in rhythm to it. She was grateful for this moment but she never knew what he had gone through to be where he is.
“I’m sorry about that.”
“You do not have to be” He said stroking her hair. Then in a faraway tone said, “it’s been a long time anyways.” They fell into a comfortable silence afterwards. Kathlyn stroked his chest, humming softly to the beat of his heart. It was like soulful music to her ears, purposeful and soft.
“Do you think you are doing the right thing?” Adam asked in a strained voice which sounded like he was trying to hide pain. Kathlyn felt a knot in her throat at his words. She suddenly felt a rush of heat and tingles riding up her back causing the hairs on the back of her neck to rise.
“Why?”
“You have a boyfriend” He replied in a flat tone. Embarrassed, Kathlyn stood up from his chest and propped on her left hand. She stared at him, trying to hide the blush on her cheek which was evident under the bright light.
“You have a f**k buddy” She retorted.
“Franca is just… Franca was in a situation. She was in an abusive relationship and when she tried to escape, she had an accident. The accident scarred her face and made her lose some fragments of her memory” He explained. Kathlyn looked at him in shock. The story reminded her of Tony and his ex-wife but she pushed that thought away. She felt hurt for Franca. Nobody should go through something like that.
“Is that why you both became f**k buddies?” She spat disdainfully. The knot in her throat was getting tighter. She was trying to solve a mystery and find reasons to still stay connected to Adam. She did not want to hate him without knowing or having reasons to.
“It was a mutual decision. You can say we both needed some comforting and since both parties were willing, we went for it.” She searched his eyes, trying to make sure he was not lying while at the same time looking for something to hold him down with. She wanted a reason to not love him.
What was she doing? She had a boyfriend yet here she was with some other man – Adam. She was apparently betraying Tony. She should feel guilty for it. She wanted to feel guilty for it. Why did she not feel guilty?
“I know you think of whatever we shared that night as a mistake but for what it’s worth, it was the best night of my life. Get some sleep, Kathlyn. We have work tomorrow” He said and turned his back to her. He pulled the quilt over his body and sucked in a deep breath. Kathlyn watched the rise and fall of his back for some seconds before lying on her side facing him.
This felt pleasant and she hoped she would not wake up and have regrets. Her mind fleeted to the child she carried in her tummy making her wrap her arms around herself. Like this, in this position with Adam, she was tempted to wrap her arms around him and whisper her deepest secrets to him. She felt the urge to confess about her feelings to him and tell him about the child she was carrying – his child.
She made the decision to bear the child. She did not want to consider abortion. This child is the only thing which really belongs to her and she is eternally grateful to Adam for what he had given her. Slowly, tiredness seeped into her body. She let out a yawn and adjusted herself properly on the bed. She pulled the quilt over her and fell into a peaceful sleep.
Adam turned around to look at her when he heard the soft, even whisper of her breath. He watched her, admiring the rhythmic rise and fall of her chest. Her lips were parted enabling her expel air. Her lashes fell to her high cheekbones giving her a soft, calm and sensual feature. His groin stirred in excitement. Adam chastised himself, trying to gain control over his thoughts and c**k. Since the last time he shared a bed with Kathlyn, he had been envisioning doing it again. When he saw her at the bar tonight, he decided to make use of the opportunity. He was not sure if she would come to him but he resolved to go to her if she did not.
Three glasses of shot were not enough to make him drunk but she did not know that. All he had to do was act drunk to get close to her. His heart soared when it worked making him excited. He was certain she would never suspect him to be acting. His thoughts went to the jealous manner in which she spoke about Franca making him smile.
How long had she been thinking these things? He wondered about it. Had she wanted to ask him these questions for a long time now? Did she really care or was she trying to satisfy his curiosity? He hoped she cared. He wanted her to care. He pulled her closer to himself, stilling when she moved and relaxing when she did not wake. He placed his nose in her hair, inhaling the fruity smell of whatever hair wash she used and feeling satisfaction course through his veins.
“I love you, Kathlyn” He whispered and held her tightly till he fell asleep.
The rays of sunlight bled in through the window waking Kathlyn up. She batted her eyelids to enable her adjust to the light before groaning. She tapped the bed gently in search of Adam but was confused and surprised when she felt the cold space of the bed. She propped up using her left elbow and stared around the room in search of any trace of him. She pushed the quilt to the side and got down from the bed.
Her search for Adam proved futile making her heart drop. She felt sad that he left without at least dropping a note. Her disappointment turned to worry then jealousy. A lone thought got into her head, making her wonder if Adam left because of Franca. The thought lingered for a while. She got dressed and made her out of the hotel room.
The cold air whipped against her exposed skin making her wrap her arms around herself. She looked around the street, trying to know where she was and how she could get home. She brought her cell phone out from her bag to check the time. It was past eight in the morning. There were also messages from Jas making her bit her tongue. Deciding to deal with Jas later, she put the phone in her bag and focused on getting a ride to take her home.
All the way home, she thought about the relationship she shared with Adam. It certainly has crossed the boundaries of a boss-employee relationship. It still confused her about what name they would give what was happening and she could not tell if she was prepared to discuss that with Adam. Maybe she had to. She was with his child.
