Kathlyn’s eyes peeled open. She groaned softly, stretched her hands above her head and a soft sigh escaped her lips. “Why do I have to go to work today?” She grumbled under her breath. She sighed again and forced herself up from the bed.

She walked into the bathroom and was thrown off balance for a bit at the image in the mirror. She looked disastrous. Her hair was a mess and the kohl she lined her eyes with the day before had smeared all over her face as a result of the crying she did the previous night. She growled softly before turning on the faucet. She cursed Adam under her breath as she washed her face clean.

She walked out of the bathroom when she was done and walked to her bed. Just as she was searching for her phone, it rang from the vanity top. She rushed over to it and was relieved to see Jasmine’s name as the caller ID.

“Tell me everything” Jas demanded as soon as she picked the call. Her brows furrowed but straightened in realization. She shook her head at her friend and walked over to make her bed after putting her phone on speaker.

“Everything like what, Jas?”

“Don’t play dumb with me. Tell me everything that happened last night” She prompted. Kathlyn rolled her eyes and pressed her lips into a thin line and breathed, “Nothing happened, Jas.”

“What do you mean nothing happened?”

“Exactly what I said! Nothing happened.” There was silence on the other end for a while before a loud, hissing sound was heard.

“Kathlyn, I know you were a virgin before last night and you probably still feel shy about everything that happened last night but we are best friends. Best friends share these sorts of things with each other” Jas insisted. Kathlyn picked up her phone, removed it from loudspeaker and made her way out of the room. She went into the kitchen and dropped the phone on the counter before putting it on loudspeaker again. “Why? He spent the night, did he not?”

“He did not” Kathlyn said with a deflated tone. Thinking about it was not as painful as talking about it. Discussing this with someone made it more real – the rejection. Her shoulders slumped and she placed both hands on the counter. Her head fell as she thought about everything. “I thought he was coming in for a kiss. I pushed my pride aside and asked him why he was rejecting me but it made no difference to him. I feel like a chew toy, Jas.”

“Oh, dear! You are not a chew toy. Adam has no idea what he is missing on. Do you love him?” Jas asked in a soft voice. The question made Kathlyn swallow. She had been thinking about it for a while but she had been inconclusive. She had never experienced love from another man who was not her father before. She had no idea what it felt like being in love with someone. The closest idea she had was from books.

“I don’t know, Jas. I used to crush on him but now, I don’t know. It just stings every time. The thing at the office, the hotel, last night - everything is just too much. I feel like I’m losing my mind pining over my boss” She admitted.

“I crushed on my teacher in high school once. Despite knowing I would never mean more than a student to him, I still made advances to him. I thought it was love and I imagined getting married to him…” Jasmine’s words were punctuated by a laugh. Kathlyn laughed too.

“You have always been stupid, Jas.”

“I have. I met him some years ago and his accent irritated me. The same accent I used to swoon over. It might be the same for you now, Kathlyn. You might be in love with the idea of being with Adam but not Adam. He is a fine, rich and sexy man whose ass I feel like tapping sometimes but he might not be totally worth it. Anyone who makes you cry constantly does not deserve you, Kathie. Put on your big girl panties and go to work and face him like you are the boss.”

Kathlyn took in a huge, satisfying breath and pushed her hair back. She repeated Jasmine’s words in her head, slowly this time letting every word sink. Probably, Jasmine was right. She might just be in love with the idea of loving Adam and not actually in love with him. Jasmine’s words opened a new train of thoughts in her head. She trudged to the sink and washed her hands under the running water.

“Thank you, Jas. I never thought about it like this. You are not completely stupid, after all” She teased.

“Yeah, yeah, yeah. I will get back to you for this.” Both ladies laugh. Kathlyn felt relaxed and the weight which she felt like she bore had dissipated. She walked to her counter, brought out a coffee bag and placed it in a cup before putting it in her heater.

“What about Jeremy?” Kathlyn asked changing the topic. Jas drawled out a sigh.

“He broke up with me last night.”

“Goodness! Are you okay?” Kathlyn asked worriedly. Jasmine and Jeremy had been dating since Jas was in sophomore year. She had watched Jeremy become successful and grown to be the man he is today. Despite that their relationship has had many ups and downs just like other relationships, they had always managed to sort it out.

“Yeah. I saw it coming, by the way. I saw a video of him with some Spanish model. He is in Madrid currently, can you believe that? The relationship was crashing anyway” Jas said in a nonchalant manner.

“I am so sorry, Jas.”

“Don’t be. This is a great opportunity for me to explore my options. I’ve been seeing another guy lately, anyways” She responded waving Kathlyn’s worry off.

“I should have known” Kathlyn scoffed and rolled her eyes.

“Yeah. Are you going to work?”

“I have to. Adam probably found out that I lied yesterday. I cannot afford to not go again today” She said shrugging her shoulders.

“You should go now then. Catch you later” Jasmine whispered before hanging up the phone. Kathlyn turned towards the heater, turned it off, poured the hot water into her cup and downed the coffee slowly. She dumped the emptied cup in the sink and walked up to her room.

“Good morning, Jess” She said offering a smile to her as she walked into the office.

“Morning Kathlyn. How do you feel today?” Jess asked returning her smile.

“So much better, thank you.” She made her way over to her office and sucked in a breath before settling down on her seat. She felt somewhat energized after speaking with Jas and she felt like she would be able to take on anything the day brought.

She went through the files on her desk, searching for the one which she had to give to Adam later in the day. It was a file containing proceedings from the meeting they attended on Saturday. She had not had the opportunity to give it to him because of everything that was going on. After arranging the files, she sucked in a breath and opened her laptop to begin working for the day.

She worked for fifteen minutes before the sound of Adam’s voice reverberating through the office caused her to still. Her palms instantly became sweaty and she rubbed it on her dress. “Breathe, Kathie. He is only your boss. Remember, be the boss” She said sucking in deep breaths to calm her. She waited till he was settled in his seat before standing up from her seat, straightening her dress, making sure her hair was in place before picking the file and sashaying her way out of her office.

Adam had his back turned to the door. Without bothering to knock, she pushed the door open gently and walked into the office. Adam slowly turned around, instantly flushed by the sight of Kathlyn in a body con, black dress. His groin stirred and his eyes twitched at the sight of her. She had her hair down. It was the first time she was wearing her hair down in his presence. The sound of her throat clearing pulled him back from the land of his thoughts.

“I brought the file from the meeting, sir. It contains the details of the contract and everything you asked me to document” She informed. Adam’s concentration was on her lips as she spoke. He gaped at her, unable to take his eyes off her. She bounced on her feet, secretly smiling at the effect she had on him.

She had purposely let her hair down. She knew she looked different when she did and she chose to utilize it today. She hid the smile on her lips and pretended to not be aware of the stare Adam was shooting her way. This felt fun. It should be fun.
