“Jasmine, can you come over?” Kathlyn said leaving a voice message for her friend. She got home that evening feeling downcast. The weight of everything that transpired lately was beginning to weigh her down. She felt like she needed a break but she could not have it. So, she opted for a shoulder to lean on.
She walked to the couch and laid down on it. She curled herself into a ball and sobbed softly. The sound of her door opening alerted her. She pushed herself up and watched as Jasmine walked towards her.
“Oh, Kathie” Jas called wrapping her hands around her. “You look a mess” She said. Kathie sniffled and shook her head quickly.
“You were right about him. He is an asshole.”
“Hush, darling. Don’t be like that. Don’t think about him anymore. He does not deserve it” Jas cooed. She stroke Kathie’s hair gently and whispered soothing words to her. Kathlyn’s lips quivered as she tried to stop the sobs from escaping. “Go freshen up and wear something sexy” Jas said pushing her away gently.
“Why? I’m not in the mood to go anywhere” She said in protest.
“You won’t sit here sulking for a man who does not deserve it. Not on my watch. Stand the hell up from this seat, Kathlyn Georgia and go get dressed. We are going somewhere nice. It doesn’t have to be a club” Jas assured. Kathlyn thought about it for a while.
She was in terrible shape and going out might either turn out good or bad. Deciding that she had nothing much to lose, she went up the stairs and straight to the shower. She got dressed in a decent brown colored gown which she got from pretty little things and paired it with black flats. She chose a black clutch, applied a bit of makeup on her face and bound out of the room.
Jasmine drove them to a nice Italian restaurant since Kathlyn said she was not interested in going to a club. She let a valet park her car while they both made their way into the restaurant.
“Can we sit in a booth, please?” Kathlyn whispered to Jas. She nodded and turned towards a waiter who was walking towards them.
“Good evening. Welcome to good Italian. Where would you like to sit?” A young boy who looked to be in his early twenties said. He had a lithe in his speech as a result of his accent making it seem like he lisped as he spoke.
“We would like a booth, please…”
“And a bottle of your finest wine for the ladies” A rich male voice ordered from behind them. Both ladies turned around quickly to stare at the owner of the voice. Kathlyn’s eyebrows furrowed in concentration at the familiar face. She smiled softly when she recognized him.
“Tony. What a pleasant surprise” She said gleefully.
“You both know each other?” Jas asked looking from one person to the other.
“We met at a park once.”
“Madam?” The waiter called pulling their attention back to him. He pointed towards a booth and led them to it. Tony walked behind the ladies and stopped when they got to their destination. He smiled at Kathlyn and offered his hand out to her. She shook it lightly before releasing it.
“Care to sit with us?” She offered.
“If it won’t be a bother to you beautiful ladies” He said. Her lips parted into a smile. She moved to the side to let him get in. Jasmine shot a suspicious glance his way before focusing on Kathlyn.
“What would you fine people like to have tonight?” The waiter asked again.
“We will call when we need you” Jas snapped. Kathlyn looked at her in question but Jas waved her off. Tony reminded him about the wine before dismissing the waiter. He turned towards Jas and offered her a tight lipped smile.
“You seem uncomfortable with my presence. Would you like me to go?”
“No. No, she is absolutely fine, right Jas?” Kathlyn breathed through gritted teeth. Jasmine rolled her eyes but gave no response.
“I saw you ladies entering the restaurant and decided to drop by to say hi. I never got the opportunity to get Kathlyn’s number so I was ecstatic to see her here” He explained.
“You don’t have to explain anything to her. She is just being a child” Kathlyn convinced. He offered her a smile and nodded her head. Their wine arrived and they drank while making small talk.
Jas slowly began loosening up as the effect of the wine began to kick in. Kathlyn on the other hand made sure to not drink too much to avoid getting drunk. She wanted to drink so as to forget about the one man who had been on her mind the entire day but she had to be the responsible one and drive Jas home.
At this point, she was glad Jas forced her to learn driving. It would have been a disaster. She looked at her phone, feeling the need to pick it up and put a call across to Adam. He hurt her yet she felt like talking to him and get him to explain things to her. She knew she was being stupid for wanting to give him a chance to justify his bullshit but she had no idea what to do about anything else at this point.
“Hey, are you okay?” Tony asked squeezing her hand gently. The action pulled her out of her thoughts. She forced a smile and nodded her head.
“I am okay. It’s just the wine” She lied.
“Do you want to get going? Your friend looks like she needs some rest” He said. She looked at him, feeling her heart warm at the thought that someone cared for them. Tony had small eyes which completely disappeared when he laughed but they were beautiful. They were neither piercing grey nor big eyes but they held depth and warmth. His eyes creased at the corners when he laughed and she had seen that multiple times tonight.
He had a beautiful laugh too. His teeth were always on full display when he laughed and his laugh was always from his heart or so it seemed. She felt like they could end up being really good friends. His hair matted his face and he had his head tilted to the side, waiting for a response from her.
“Kathlyn?” He called. She blinked. “Do you want to get going?” He repeated.
“Yes… yes, sure. Jasmine needs to be home before she gets worse.” He nodded and rose up from the seat. She picked her purse off the table and rounded it till she was standing close to Jasmine. Jasmine’s eyes were drooping but she had not reached the point where she misbehaved. It was relieving to Kathlyn.
She helped Jas up and helped her put on her shoes which she had removed when she sat. Thankfully, the restaurant was almost deserted so there was no thought of being embarrassed. Kathlyn helped her to the car while Tony followed behind with Jasmine’s purse in his hand. She put Jas in the passenger’s side before closing the door and turning to face Tony.
“Thank you so much for tonight, Tony. We had fun although Jas had way too much fun” She said shooting a glance at her weary friend.
“I feel nice that I was able to do something for you. I would like to call you tomorrow though. See if you’ll be free after work…” He trailed off. She smiled softly and stretched out her hand requesting for his phone.
She inputted her number and handed it over to him with a smile plastered on her face. She felt lighter and fulfilled in Tony’s presence. It was a disparity to what she felt with Adam. Adam was like fire; threatening to burn her if she got too close. Despite the danger, she wanted to be close. She did get close.
“I will see you tomorrow night then?” Tony questioned breaking her thoughts. She nodded. He nodded and retreated till he disappeared into the restaurant. Kathlyn got into the car and drove to her apartment.
She helped Jas out of the car and into her bed before proceeding to take a shower. As was her ritual, the events of the day began playing in her head as she stood under the shower. She wanted to feel guilty for smiling with some other man when she was with Adam the other night but she could not. He had done worse after all.
Besides, she only smiled with the man not f**k him. She had absolutely nothing to be guilty about. She dismissed every thought of Adam from her head and settled for thoughts of the relaxing night she just had with Tony.
