Falling in Love

1545 Words
Kathlyn quietly followed Adam into the house, grateful for his strength which was comfort to her. It was ironic how she came here with the intentions of consoling him but as soon as she saw him, the suppressed emotions from the last few days came crashing down. She was grateful for his understanding, thankful that he did not bombard her with questions. Instead, he let her cry her heart out before leading her into his house. He walked to the kitchen and returned with a glass of water. He handed the glass over to her and settled on the loveseat opposite her. She hungrily drank the water and ran her hand through her hair. She dropped the cup on the table when she was done. She looked up at Adam, freezing at the intensity of his gaze. He c****d his head to the side as he watched her, trying to unnerve her with his stare. She adjusted slightly on the seat and averted her gaze. “Are you all right, Kathlyn?” He asked breaking the silence. Her back straightened as shivers ran down her spine at how easily her name rolled out of his tongue. He drawled out each syllable, making it sound sensual. She clasped her legs together and inhaled. “You were not taking my calls” She let out in a voice filled with strangled need. Adam gulped, struggling to hold himself back from jumping on her seat and wrapping her in his arms. “I saw the news.” “It was nothing” He said waving his hand in dismissal. “It wasn’t nothing to me” She confessed with concern dripping down each word. Adam looked at her, eyes filled with emotions and love for her. There was so much he wanted to tell her but the top of the list at this moment was to say how grateful he was that she came. He needed comforting and her presence not only calmed him but provided him with strength. When he heard about the fire, he was apprehensive. He wanted to wake her up to explain things to her as he did not want them to continue having misunderstandings. He thought against it though when he saw how peacefully she slept. His house on Prestige was the biggest house he had in France. He had built it with the intentions of moving in whenever he was ready for a family. When he fell in love with Kathlyn and was certain she was the one he wanted, he made plans on telling her about his feelings in the house. Now, everything was gone. His chest constricted at the thought of his dream shattering. He sucked in a deep breath, aware that she was watching him and afraid of adding to her concern. “How did the fire happen?” “I have no clue about that. Investigations are ongoing” He responded lightly. He twisted his fingers and rubbed the back of his head gently. “I need to have a bath. Will you be good down here?” He questioned. He rose up from his chair and fixed his gaze on her, awaiting a response. “I will be all right” She responded and bit the inside of her cheek nervously. Adam stared at her for a few minutes, nodded his head then, walked up the spiral stairs. She sucked in a deep breath when he disappeared into the entryway. She looked around the house, taking in the white walls and painting of the Monalisa placed on the right corner of the wall. There were random paintings on the wall too which made no sense to her. Funny how she had no clue about art yet she was the girlfriend of an artist. Tony. He flashed through her mind and she swallowed the knot which was building in her throat. She felt a tiny bit of guilt but nothing serious enough to make her leave Adam’s apartment and go to Tony’s. She was still mad at him for last night. Tired, she placed her head on the armrest and shut her eyes. The smell of freshly brewed coffee wafted into her nostrils making her peel her eyes open. She looked around the place, confused about where she was. She jumped from her chair, stood in a fighting stance and looked around the place worriedly. Her eyes fell on Adam who rested his body on the kitchen wall and stared at her in amusement. It took her a few seconds to recall where she was. “Are you okay?’ Adam asked walking towards her. He held two cups of coffee in hand and stretched one out to her. She stared at his outstretched arm and c****d her head to the side. She scuttled back to the couch and placed her hand on her head. Adam dropped the cup on the table and took a sip from his with his eyes fixed on her. “I have a headache” She replied. “I think you need a doctor” He suggested. She pinched her eyebrows together and shook her head. “I am all right. I only need to rest” She said avoiding his eyes. “I think you need a shower. There are some clothes in the guest room. I could get them for you to change into?” “No, please. I would rather not. I don’t want to wear anything which belongs to Franca” She said disdainfully making Adam chuckle. “She is not a bad person.” She ground her teeth while shooting a death glare at him. “I’m sorry” He said raising his hand in mock surrender. She rolled her eyes at him. “I should get going. I only wanted to know how you are. I was worried when I saw the news” She said. She combed her hair with her fingers but gave up when it made no difference. “Stay” Adam breathed in a husky whisper. “I insist.” She grazed her bottom lip with her tongue and exhaled. Adam sucked in a deep breath, affected by her action. “Where is the guest room?” His eyes lit in childlike excitement. He led her up the stairs and into a room. The walls of this room were painted coffee brown and the furniture was purely white. The king sized bed was covered in crisp white bed sheets which complimented the color of the walls. Kathlyn instantly fell in love. She moved towards the bed and grazed her fingers on it. She sat on it, threw her head backwards and smiled wholeheartedly. “I can see you love it” Adam commented walking after her. She opened her eyes and smiled shyly at him. “It is exquisite” She confessed. “It is. The bathroom is there. New clothes which are not Franca’s are in the wardrobe. Breakfast will be ready before you are done” He informed. She rolled her eyes at the mention of Franca but bit her bottom lip to hide her smile. Adam shot her a heartwarming smile then, walked out of the room. She listened to the soft, retreating, padding of his footsteps before laying back on the bed. Feeling a bit energized, she rose up and walked into the bathroom. When she was done with her bath several minutes later, she was stunned to see the cup of coffee she left downstairs sitting on the bedside table. She walked towards it with a smile plastered on her face. She walked closer to the table, intoxicated by the rich smell coming from the cup on the table. She inhaled deeply and made to pick the cup when she remembered the growing child in her tummy. Her eyebrows furrowed and she grumbled silently. She eyed the cup hungrily, wishing for a sip but knowing that it could be dangerous for her baby. She went to the closet and rummaged through it in search of something comfortable to wear. There were gowns, dress shirts, crop tops and T-shirts scattered in the closet. She selected a gray colored T-shirt which she suspected to be Adam’s and threw it on. The shirt stopped mid-thigh showing off her long, tanned legs. She walked to the vanity and stared at the mirror for some time before walking out of the room feeling fresh and excited. At the stairs, she heard sounds of arguing making her stop. She strained her ears to listen on the conversation but she could not make anything out. The only thing she knew was that Adam was talking to someone, probably Franca. The thought set off the red alarms in her head. She bound down the staircase, determined to know what the matter was and to put an end to whatever games Adam was playing once and for all. Adam’s fingers were clasped together in a pleading manner. His hair was ruffled, probably from running his hands through it a lot. His shoulders slumped when his eyes fell on Kathlyn. He ran his tongue over his bottom lip. She stared at him for some time before turning to stare at Franca who had a bewildered expression on her face.
