“Hey, mom. How are you doing?” Kathlyn breathed softly into the phone.
“I’m doing great. So great because you called” Kim responded making Kathlyn chuckle. “You should call more often, you know? It seems like you abandoned your family.”
“Mom, I call every week” She said, aghast.
“That’s not enough, Kathie. Besides, you did not call the previous week. I just miss you a lot, you know? Your papa does too” Kim responded sadly.
“Mom, please. I will call more often, I promise” She said needing an escape. If Kim continued talking about this, her father would join in and she would never hear the last of it. She was not prepared for that now. “I called for a reason.”
“I knew it. Kathie, you never call without a…”
“I’m pregnant, mom” She announced interrupting Kim’s blabbering. Her announcement stunned Kim to silence. After a short while, she gave a short gasp then, the line fell silent again. Kathlyn bounced on her feet uncontrollably as she waited for Kim to say something.
Feeling the need for some more air, she moved to her window, pulled the blinds apart and looked out at the empty streets. It was still mid day on her third day of not visiting Adam. She sighed at the thought.
“Mom, please say something.”
“Kathie, I’m shook. How are you pregnant? I thought we decided you were going to wait till you either get married or you clock thirty. What made you change your mind? The new job?” Kim was on a roll and Kathlyn knew if she did not stop her soon, she would be writhing in pain and anguish, on the floor in the next few minutes.
“Mummy, it was a mistake.”
“A mistake? Pregnancy is never a mistake. You get pregnant when you become too comfortable around a man. Also, never you call a child a mistake. They are blessings” Kim lectured.
What did the woman want?
“Mom, will you listen to me, please?” Her voice came out more desperate and broken than she intended. She swallowed the lump in her throat and bit on her tongue. “I fell in love and we made love. At the time, I didn’t know he loves me. Now, there’s a baby in the picture and he wants to be a part of it.”
Her mother’s silence unnerved her. What was going on in her head?
“Who is this man?”
This was the question Kathlyn dreaded. Squaring her shoulders and deciding to damn the consequences, Kathlyn took in a deep breath and whispered, “Adam Smith, my boss.”
The silence which followed was deafening. Kathlyn stared up at the ceiling, silently wishing that her mother would not blow up on her. The reason she hid this information from her family till this time was because of how strict her parents are.
“I will tell your father about this. He will know what to do.”
“Mom, please don’t” She cut in quickly. “I will tell him myself. Just, be patient.”
“Is he aware of the pregnancy, the father?”
“Yes, he is.”
“I need to go, Kathlyn. I need to grasp this situation properly. Take care of yourself” Kim said tiredly. Her tone filled Kathlyn with another pang of guilt but she swallowed and nodded, deciding to not object to her mother’s decision. It will probably help her think too. Before she could say anything else, Kim hung up the phone.
Kathlyn threw her phone to the end of the bed and plopped down on it. She was exhausted. For a moment, she wished she could flick her fingers to make all these come to an end. She rubbed her forehead gently and blinked back the tears which were pooling in her eyes.
Sometimes, life comes extremely hard at us and it proves to be overwhelming. Kathlyn was at that point in her life when everything was overwhelming and tiring. She wanted to evaporate into thin air but that was impossible. Her mind traveled to Adam. Instead of sitting back and thinking too much about anything, she sucked in a deep breath and rose up from her position. She drew her legs and walked into the bathroom.
She came out moments later with water dripping down her bare body. She picked a fresh towel from her wardrobe, dried herself up before selecting something to wear from her closet. She settled for a binge gown which stopped right above her knee and brown flats. She packed her hair up in a ponytail, applied lip gloss, smacked her lips confidently, took a look at herself in the mirror and smiled meekly.
Her eyes fell on her tummy which protruded slightly. She rubbed it slightly and smiled at the thought of her child growing inside her. It was surreal. Taking one last look at herself, she blew a small kiss at her reflection and turned to walk out of the room.
The ride to the hospital was short but exhausting. Exhaustion was a regular thing for Kathie now. Regardless of the distance she walked, she always felt exhausted. She got out of the car, paid for the ride and sashayed into the hospital. Wearing a bright smile, she walked to the reception and stated her intentions. The nurse welcomed her warmly and gave her permission to go to Adam’s room.
She took the elevator and tried to not give room to anxiety during the ride up. Whilst trying to not feel anxious, she also tried to push back the bile which was rising in her throat from the ride. As soon as the elevator dinged open, she flew out and took in large gulps of air which she had been holding in.
Slowly, she made her way to Adam’s room. The corridor was empty making her wonder if Adam was really on this floor. The nurse made mention that Adam was transferred to another room because his mother insisted. She would ask about that later but now, she had to deal with her nerves. She had not seen Adam in three days. She was a wreck. Her heart thumped loudly in her chest as she advanced towards his room.
She stared at the numbers at the top of the doors to know which room was his. Her heart skipped a bit when her eyes caught the room number the nurse mentioned; 401. Taking one last look around the corridor, she sucked in a deep breath and pushed the door open.
Adam wore a broad smile on his face as he stared at his sister whose hands hung mid-air. His mother’s head was thrown backwards in laughter which was cut short by Kathlyn’s entrance. There was a man in the room too who Kathlyn had never seen. Instantly, she felt stupid. Adam’s eyes strayed to her and there was a glint of happiness as he stared at her.
The room was silent as everyone stared at her in surprise. It took some minutes before the man cleared his throat, effectively breaking the silence. Kathlyn pinched her brows together slightly and pursed her lips.
“I’m terribly sorry. I had no idea that there were people in the room” She said pleadingly. “The nurse…”
“Oh, dear. You have nothing to be sorry about” Mildred cut in waving her off. Her lips were parted in a smile as she rose from where she sat and walked over to Kathlyn. “Adam almost lost his mind. Glad you came.” She got closer to Kathlyn, placed a hand on her shoulder, squeezed lightly and offered her a reassuring smile.
“Kathlyn” Adam breathed making her stare up at him. The light in his eyes calmed every wrecked nerve in her body. He looked extremely handsome – more than the last time. Probably because of the stubble on his face or because the bruises were healing or because of the bright smile on his face. Whichever it was, it warmed her heart.
Mildred’s soft tap on her shoulder pulled her out of her imagination. She looked over at Jane who had a smile on her face too. She gave her a small nod before looking back at Adam. He looked like he wanted to fly over to her and wrap his arms around her. Ignoring the others in the room and deciding to listen to her heart, she took long strides over to him and stopped beside him.
“Adam.”
A tremor ran down his spine as his name escaped her lips. He winced as he adjusted himself properly on the bed. He lifted his right hand, beckoning on Kathlyn to come closer. At this moment, they felt they were all alone in the room. Everything and everybody else vanished into thin air as they stared at each other. Kathlyn held her bag tightly, bent slowly to Adam and let his arm graze the side of her face. The action made a small moan of satisfaction escape her lips.
Adam’s heated gaze met hers. He watched her for some time, grabbed her head softly, pulled her down to himself and placed a longing kiss on her lips which she reciprocated. They kissed each other feverishly, ignoring the presence of the others.
