The sound of loud laughter rang in Kathlyn’s head but it was not as hurtful as the sight of Adam laughing with Franca. He never laughed with her that way. She clenched and unclenched her fist, shot death glares to Franca, contemplated confronting her but changed her mind when she realized she had no right to. Following her better judgment, she turned round, shut the door loudly and almost bumped into Jane.
“I think I know why Adam loves you” Jane said with an amused grin on her face. Kathlyn rolled her eyes and made to walk past her but was stopped. “You don’t have to go. If there’s anything you have troubles with, I think you should talk to him about it. Dialogues help relationships.”
“We do not have a relationship” She hissed.
“Is that decision yours or a collective one?” She made to reply but the words were stuck in her throat. “You really should do what makes you happy, Kathlyn. It’s clear that you are in love with Adam but I have no clue why you are trying to fight it. Don’t you think you are hurting yourself?”
She wriggled her fingers and chewed on the inside of her cheek, trying to avoid Jane’s eyes. Jane was right but Kathlyn was afraid. She was afraid that confessing her love to Adam would give him total power over her. She was afraid that her life would change dramatically if she decided to follow her heart. She was uncertain…
The sound of Adam’s door opening alerted her. She turned sharply towards the door and glared at Franca.
“I’m sorry if I made you uncomfortable” Franca apologized to Kathlyn after giving Jane a small nod.
“Excuse me, please” Kathlyn said to Jane before opening the door and walking into Adam’s room, totally ignoring Franca. She heard the sigh which escaped Jane’s lips but she chose to ignore it, focused only on confronting Adam.
Her heart skipped when she came face to face with him. She did not miss the smirk dancing on the corner of his lips which he tried to hide. Ignoring his gloating, she walked to the couch, dumped her bag in it and turned to look at him with her hands placed firmly on her waist.
“It’s good to see that you are having fun” She started.
“You don’t want me to have fun?” Adam teased.
“You know what I mean, Adam. I asked you a really serious question before…”
“You asked if I love you?” He cut in making her snap her mouth shut. She pressed her lips into a thin line and avoided his eyes. Every attitude and anger she felt seconds ago slowly disappeared. “Kathlyn, I would die for you.”
Adam’s words sent tiny shivers down her spine. She slowly stared back at him and her shoulders deflated as she looked at him.
“Kathlyn, I don’t want you doubting what I feel for you. It hurt me that night when you did. Perhaps that was why I did something as silly as drinking and driving” He continued. “And, no. It was not your fault” He added when she opened her mouth to protest.
“Adam…”
“You do not have to love me back. Just give me a chance to prove that I love you beyond anything else in this world, please.”
Every wall she had been trying to build the past few weeks immediately collapsed when he said those words. She twisted her fingers and tried to push back tears but the more she tried, the quicker they fell. Her lips quivered uncontrollably as she tried to get the right words to say.
“Oh, Kathlyn” Adam called in pity. Her hand flew to her mouth and before she could think against it, she trod over to him and wrapped his head in her arms making Adam wince. She released his head slightly but held on to him for dear life.
“I love you too, Adam. I’ve tried to not let it consume me but the more I try, the harder I fall” She said amidst tears. Adam lifted his right hand and patted her gently on her back.
“You are crushing me, Kathie” He coughed out. Quickly, she broke apart and wiped her tears with the back of her palm.
“I’m sorry” She apologized meekly. He shook his head and offered her a heart-warming smile.
“Can you seat here, please? I want you close” He begged, scuttling to the other side of the bed to give her room. She obliged his request and sat close to him while shyly wriggling her fingers.
A sudden wave of calmness washed over her at the thought that Adam knows how she feels. She felt inexplicably content – like a purpose of her life had been achieved. Probably because she has loved Adam longer than she can remember or because she envisages a life with him.
They sat in silence as Adam thought of the best way to prove himself to Kathlyn. For the past couple of weeks that he has known her, he discovered that she was someone who found it difficult to trust. She had admitted to having a crush on him which had metamorphosed into love but he felt he had to put in work. He knew he had to.
“Have you called Jess?” Kathlyn asked.
“I did yesterday. She knows what to do now that I’m indisposed” He replied.
“I haven’t been to the office in days” She confessed. She felt guilty for not going while also feeling like she was taking advantage of the fact that she had something with Adam.
“I told Jess that you have something to do outside the office” He informed. Her head spun to him and her eyes reflected the gladness she felt. “I know. I’m awesome” He gloated making her laugh. “You are beautiful when you smile” He complimented. The atmosphere became lightly tensed almost immediately.
He watched as she ran her tongue over her bottom lip, lightly pulled her hair out of the bun and wriggled her hands lightly.
“Why was Franca here?” She blurted out before she could stop herself. Adam looked at her suspiciously but shrugged his shoulders lightly and rolled his eyes.
“She came to see how I’m doing. Said she heard about the accident on TV but she was not in the country. She came in as soon as she landed” He explained. Uncomfortable, Kathlyn adjusted on the bed and pouted her lips. “Are you jealous?”
“I don’t have a reason to be.”
“I think you do” He said in a loud whisper. She stated at him with her eyebrows raised. “You bolted into the room angrily. That means you were jealous. It’s okay to be” He pushed, greatly aware of the danger that was lurking. Kathlyn’s nostrils flared in anger as she watched him.
“You are delusional” She hissed. He shrugged his shoulders, bit on his bottom lip and let his eyes roam round the room.
“Okay.”
She made to say something more, anything else to make him take back his words but the door was pushed open, interrupting her thoughts. They turned towards the door and she was pleasantly surprised to see Jasmine standing there with a bag in her right hand. She wore a peach colored crop top and black leather pants paired with black heels. Her hair fell in loose curls to her back while her lips were painted mauve. She looked good; too good.
“Jasmine, how did you know I was here?” Kathlyn asked standing up from the bed and walking towards her. As soon as she got to Jas, she wrapped her arms around her and held her tightly in a hug.
“I guessed” Jasmine mumbled. “You are crushing me” She managed to let out while struggling with Kathlyn. Kathlyn loosened her hands but maintained her position.
“Thank you so much for coming” She said, meaning it. The emotional and moral support which Jas always provided her was something she could never trade.
“That doesn’t work. You have to give me chicken” Jas said seriously. Kathlyn broke apart from her and scowled at her.
“Chicken is bad news.”
“What? What happened to you? You think chicken is bad news?” Jas asked in outrage, placing one hand on her chest and staring at Kathlyn in mock hurt.
“It makes me nauseous” She confessed.
“Oh, dear. You should get yourself checked.”
“I told her the same” Adam spoke up drawing their attention to him. Jasmine rolled her eyes at him and turned back to her friend.
“You want to go out for some air?” She asked searching Kathlyn’s eyes.
“I’m fine, Jas. I want to be here with him.”
Not convinced, Jas glared at Adam before looking back at Kathlyn with soft eyes.
“I got some fruit for him. As much as I detest him, courtesy demands that I get something while visiting him” She commented, ignoring Adam’s stare the whole time. Kathlyn stifled a laugh and shook her head lightly. Jasmine might never forgive Adam.
