Uncertain

“What do you mean nothing happened? You have been gloomy all evening” Jas questioned. She shoved a spoon of ice cream into her mouth and sucked on it. Kathlyn played with the hem of her dress. A sigh escaped her lips. “It was just… He saw me naked, twice” She avoided Jasmine’s gaze but she could see the incredulous expression on her friend’s face through her peripheral. “What?! Kathlyn, why did you not tell me this earlier?” Jasmine asked. Her eyes widened with each word and she walked over to Kathlyn. She settled next to her on the couch and ran a hand through her hair. “Oh, dear! Did you both have s*x? Is that why he is avoiding you?” “I wish. I accused him of harassing me” Kathlyn said in regret. She certainly regretted her actions and words. “It hurts me, you know? I don’t even know why it does. It doesn’t make any sense.” She wiped the tears which had dropped on her palms and sniffled. “Maybe because you like him.” “I don’t. I can’t. He is my boss” Kathlyn said waving Jasmine’s suggestion off. “But, what if you do? Why else would you be aggravated that he has not spoken to you in a whole day? He is your boss like you said and I will advise that you be professional around him unless you decide to admit that you like him” Jasmine advised in a sing song manner. Kathie stared at her and back at her palms. She wanted to respond to Jasmine’s words but she found nothing. It was true that she liked Adam. She had done so for years. It was nothing serious. If you could call wanting him to be the first man she ever kissed nothing serious though. Her chest hurt from the thought that he was doing all this because of the night of her birthday but she could not blame him. Instead, she blamed herself for confessing such things to him. “You know what, I’ll just go get some sleep. I had a busy day and I will have an equally busy day at work tomorrow.” She tapped Jasmine’s leg twice before using it as a support to stand up. She pushed her hair behind her ear and made her way up the stairs. “Are you abandoning me here?” “You can go home, Jasmine. Thanks for your support” Kathlyn said tiredly. Jasmine puffed out a breath of disbelief. She glanced over at Kathlyn and for the first time in weeks, she really looked at her friend. She noticed how Kathie’s shoulders slumped and she hung her head like a bird beaten by the rain. She felt pity for her friend. Jasmine had never really thought about how all this must be affecting Kathlyn. She convinced herself that her friend was fine since she spoke to her every day. Jasmine was a good friend but she was a bit slow in grasping and observing things. Her heart dropped and a pang of guilt flooded through her chest when she realized that her friend had not been entirely happy all this time. Instead of sitting around and guilt tripping herself, she walked up the stairs after Kathlyn. Kathlyn was lying on the bed when she entered. She had her arms wrapped around her and her body curled into a ball. Jasmine took off her shoes, got into bed with her, pulled the covers over both of them and wrapped her arms around her friend. The action made a few tears to drop from Kathlyn’s eyes before turning into a torrent. Jas held her as she sobbed, whispering soothing words into her ears and telling her how everything would be okay. The action relaxed Kathlyn and she felt like she had let out a huge part of herself. She sobbed till she fell asleep. Kathlyn woke up the next morning feeling like s**t. Her hair was in different directions while her eyes were puffed from all the crying. She did not feel like going to work as she was not willing to face Adam. However, she dragged her feet to the bathroom and eased herself out of the clothes. She stared at her face in the bathroom mirror and scrunched her nose in disgust at her ghostly expression. She looked horrible. She turned the faucet on, splashed some water on her face and sucked in a deep breath. She wiped her face clean with a paper towel before walking out of the bathroom. She strutted out of the room and descended down the stairs. The smell of wafers wafted through the kitchen and into her nostrils as she made her way down the stairs. She went towards the kitchen instead of the living room which was her initial destination. Her eyes almost popped out of their sockets at the sight before her. “Jasmine, what are you doing?” She said moving further into the kitchen. Jasmine’s face lit up with a bright smile as she saw Kathlyn. “You are up.” “Yeah” Kathie said pushing herself up the counter and taking an apple from the fruit basket which she took a bite of. “You should be getting ready for work.” Jasmine walked towards the sink and rinsed the knife in her hand before walking back to the counter. “I am thinking of calling in sick.” “What? You just started work” Jasmine chided. “I don’t feel like going in there and seeing Adam’s face. Not today” She said and took another bite of her apple. “I may or may not understand what you are talking about but do what you consider best for you” Jas said shrugging her shoulders. Kathlyn offered her a small smile and continued eating her apples. Kathlyn put a call across to the office much later. She was ecstatic when Jessica picked the call. After taking an excuse, she hung up the call and turned on her small television set. Jasmine was her cheer lady all through the call and it took great effort for her not to laugh at all the faces Jas was making. They both settled down to watch movies on Netflix after the call. Jas made pop corn which they both munched on. They spent the entire day on the couch, leaving only when they felt hungry or pressed. They talked about random things before moving on to other things like Jasmine’s boyfriend and how he had not called her since he travelled. They had their baths after realizing that they stunk like horses and it was unladylike. It was dark outside when they finished preparing dinner. Jasmine walked to the couch and picked up her handbag before turning to look at her friend. “It has been a really eventful day, Kathie but I’m afraid I have to go” She announced adjusting her Louis Vuitton jacket. “Why? You can stay a little longer. What will I do all alone in the house?” “You could come with me” Jasmine suggested. Kathlyn cringed and shook her head. “I will pass.” She twisted her fingers, balanced her weight on her left leg and stared at her friend with doe shaped eyes. She could not help the wave of sadness which washed over her at the thought of spending the night alone. All day, she had avoided thinking about Adam but that was only because Jasmine was there. She served as a really good distraction and leaving her all alone in the house brought back the gloomy thoughts she had tried to bury. “Well, do you. Just make sure to not sob about your asshole boss. He does not deserve it.” Kathlyn smiled smugly, nodded her head and gave Jas a small hug. She led her to the door, gave her another hug and pulled the door open for her friend to go through. As soon as she opened the door, her hand froze on the handle. Her jaw dropped at the sight in front of her and she made to speak but the words were stuck in her throat. Jasmine was struggling with her leather skirt which was the reason she had not noticed the hunk in front of Kathlyn’s door. She eventually lifted her head and looked between Kathlyn and Adam. She stared at him for a few minutes before she began feeling waves of hurt and anger flood into her head. She straightened up, crossed her arms underneath her breast and gave Adam what she referred to as the stink eye. “What are you doing here?” Jasmine said advancing towards him. “Jas, please” Kathlyn begged. She looked between Adam and Jasmine worriedly. Just this afternoon, Jasmine was talking about frying Adam’s balls and using it for the meat in burgers. Now, he was standing right in front of her. Kathlyn was afraid that if she did not step in, something terrible might happen. Jas looked at her and back at Adam who was staring unblinkingly at Kathlyn. “Call me if he does anything stupid. I will not hesitate to come castrate him” Jas threatened. Kathlyn stifled a laugh and watched as her friend pushed past Adam before making her way to her car. Before getting into her car, Jasmine turned around and shot her middle finger at Adam. Kathlyn shook her head at her friend and turned to face her boss. She was definitely in for it.
