“Kathlyn, it is so good to hear your voice” Kim’s voice said through the receiver. The phone was on loud speaker so Jas could hear the exchange. Kathlyn placed her head on her friend’s laps and wiped the tears which were dropping from her eyes away.
“It is good to hear yours too. How have you and dad been, mom?” She questioned in a small, sad voice. The line went silent for a while followed by the sound of shuffling.
“Kathie, are you okay? You sound sad, dear.” Kathlyn covered her mouth with her hand to stifle the sobs. She swallowed repeatedly before pushing her hair out of her face. Jas rubbed her head gently while cooing her.
“Mum, I’m good. I got a job” She said in a calm voice.
“A job? What happened to your other job?”
“I was fired.”
“Oh, dear!” Kim gasped.
“You have no need to worry, mum. This one is so much better. I am a personal assistant to Adam Smith” She said with a tint of pride.
“My goodness! That is awesome news. You always wanted to get close to him” Kim said excitedly. Her excitement filled Kathlyn with guilt. If only she knew that she was pregnant for her boss.
“Mom, can I call you back later?” Kathlyn asked. She rolled her eyes to push the tears back and struggled to keep her voice leveled. She ended the call cutting off Kim’s protest. The suppressed tears escaped as soon as she ended the call. “I can’t, Jas. I can’t” She said shaking her head and wailing. Jas heaved a sigh and continued patting her back in consolation.
“You have to stop crying, Kathie.”
“She will be so disappointed, Jas. She instilled good values in me. I can’t do this” Kathlyn insisted. Jasmine gently lifted Kathie’s head and placed it on the couch. She walked to the kitchen, filled a glass of water and returned to the sitting room with it. She handed the glass to Kathlyn.
“I am not thirsty.”
“Get your ass up and put some water in that system. Look, this isn’t your fault. You are a grown-ass woman with a good paying job. You can take care of whoever comes out of that belly, am I understood? So, put on your big girl panties and stop the flow of tears. This is something beautiful and magical. You are going to be a mom to an amazing human. You will be a host to some child who will revere you and love you with all its heart. That is not something to cry about” Jasmine educated.
“I’m scared” Kathlyn confessed. “I am not ready for this responsibility.” Her cries had subsided now but her lips still quivered.
“I am here. I promise to be the best aunty in the world to this little bundle of joy” Jasmine said sincerely. She wore a big smile on her face which makes Kathlyn smile too. Kathlyn pushed herself up and wraps her arms around Jas, squeezing her tightly.
“Thank you so much, Jas. I love you.”
“Of course, you love me” Jas bragged. They both laugh. “Now, go have a bath. You stink” Jas cursed. Kathlyn lifted her hands to smell her armpits making Jas laugh. She crinkled her nose in disgust and rose up from her seat. She walked to the bathroom to have a shower.
She felt a wave of tiredness wash over her as soon as she was done with her bath. She changed into a loose fitting shirt, stared at herself in the mirror for a while before making her way to the bed. Minutes after her body touched the bed, she fell into a dreamless sleep.
The sun had already risen when she woke up. She yawned loudly and looked at her clock to see that it was past nine in the morning. Tiredly, she pushed herself up from the bed and walked straight to the bathroom. After performing her morning rituals, she dragged her legs out of the bathroom and walked to her wardrobe. She lazily searched through the curtain of clothes and brought out a maroon colored dress.
She selected a gold shoe and a black purse. She wriggled her way into the dress and applied a maroon colored lipstick on her lips. Her hair cascaded in ringlets down her back giving her a bold and sexy look. She chose to not apply any make-up except the lipstick. She made her way down the stairs and walked to the kitchen where the smell of grilled chicken came from. A note which was posted on her mini refrigerator caught her eyes. She walked to it and pulled it out.
Breakfast for you and your princess is in the fridge. Heat it up before eating.
Her lips spread into a grateful smile at the note. She opened the refrigerator and brought out a bowl of pasta. She placed it in the microwave and waited for it to warm. She brought it out when she heard the sound that it was heated. She took the food to the sitting room and settled to eat. Regardless of the fact that she was late for work, she was not in a hurry. She was not in the mood to go to work.
She did not know how she was going to face Adam. She had no intentions of telling him about the pregnancy yet either. However, she would have to one of these days and that scared her. How would he take the news? Did he even want children? Would she have to carry the responsibility of the child all by herself? These thoughts turned in her head making her stomach churn.
Suddenly, she lost her appetite. She took her plate to the kitchen and dumped it on the counter. Exhausted, she walked out of the house locking the door behind her.
“Good morning, Jess” She greeted as she walked past her.
“Kathlyn” Jess called making her stop in her tracks. She lifted her eyebrows in question. “Adam wants to see you in his office.” Her heart skipped a beat at the information. She pushed her hair to the back and nodded. She walked towards Adam’s office, feeling nervous. As she got to his office, she sucked in a deep breath before pushing the door open.
Adam turned around in his swivel chair to stare at her. Her jaw dropped in shock and admiration when he turned around. His jaw was shaven clean and his hair was finely trimmed. He wore a black dress shirt inside his gray suit which complimented his eyes perfectly. Kathlyn searched for the appropriate word to use in describing his beauty but she was short of words. He stared at her, matching her gaze while studying her.
“You are late” He said breaking the silence and contact. She shyly averted her gaze and bit on her bottom lip. She flipped her hair to the side before nodding.
“I apologize. I was a bit sick” She explained. He continued watching her intently. Kathlyn bounced from one foot to the other nervously. She swallowed thickly and tried to think of anything but Adam’s piercing gaze.
“Have you seen a doctor?” He asked. He tried to keep his voice as leveled as possible but the worry in his tone could be heard. She thought about what to say. Was this the perfect time to tell him the news? What would he think of it?
“It was the drinks I took last night” She lied. Adam shrugged his shoulders and nodded in understanding.
“Great then. You should get to work. Send the files from the meeting yesterday” He ordered. She nodded gratefully and made her way out of his office. Once outside, she released the breath she had been holding and adjusted her dress before walking over to her office.
As soon as she got into her office, she walked to the dispenser and filled a glass of water which she downed in one go. She walked to her desk and settled on her swivel chair. Her mind went through the events from yesterday till this moment making her realize that she was f****d. She was pregnant for her boss who she was in love with despite having a boyfriend. Neither of the men knew her predicament and she had no idea how to tell either.
In sudden recollection, she rummaged through her handbag and brought out her phone. She stared at the missed calls she had and sucked in a breath before placing a call across to Tony. She had ignored his call on her way to work because she felt guilty and had no idea about what to tell him. The phone rang without being answered causing her to let out a sigh of relief.
Resolving to stop at his place after work, she opened her computer and delved into work for the day.
