CHAPTER 8: Embers of Fate

1180 Words
Kaelen’s hand shook as he reached out, his fingers grazing the edge of the altar. The moment his skin touched the cold stone, the world seemed to bend and twist around him. The Flame—no longer just fire—was a living thing, a torrent of energy, coursing through him, pulling him into its depths. The force of it nearly knocked him off his feet. His body burned with an intensity that felt like it might tear him apart, but at the same time, there was a strange calmness, as though something inside him was awakening. His pulse quickened, but it was no longer fear; it was something else—something more ancient, something powerful. I must choose, he thought again, the words echoing in his mind. The figure, now silhouetted by the pulsing Flame, stepped back, watching Kaelen with a mixture of expectation and contempt. “You think you can control it? You think you have the strength to hold what the dragons could not?” Kaelen swallowed hard, his entire being screaming in protest, but he didn’t pull away. He couldn’t. He had no choice now. Riona groaned behind him, slowly pushing herself up from the ground. Her sword lay beside her, forgotten for the moment. Her gaze fixed on Kaelen, a quiet, almost desperate plea in her eyes. “Kaelen, don’t let it consume you.” But it was too late. The Flame had already claimed him. Kaelen’s thoughts began to scatter, lost in a whirlwind of visions and sensations. The cave around him faded away, and he was suddenly standing on a cliff, overlooking a valley bathed in the light of a dying sun. The air was thick with smoke, and the earth beneath his feet trembled as if the world itself was about to shatter. In the distance, he saw a massive creature—its wings spread wide, dark and majestic. A dragon. But this was not like any dragon he had seen in the stories or the ancient texts. This dragon was covered in obsidian scales, its eyes burning with an ancient fire. “You are the one,” a voice whispered in his mind. “The last of the bloodline.” Kaelen gasped, his breath shallow as the vision shifted. He was no longer standing on the cliff but instead was kneeling before the dragon, its great head lowering to meet his gaze. The dragon’s eyes burned with an intense fire, and Kaelen felt a connection—a bond—forming between them. “The Flame,” the dragon spoke again, “is not just power. It is the soul of the realm. You, Kaelen, are its heir. The fate of the world lies within your hands.” The dragon’s voice echoed through Kaelen’s mind, and he felt an overwhelming weight settle on his shoulders. He was not just a survivor—he was a part of something much greater. The Flame wasn’t just a weapon; it was the heart of the world, the source of the dragons’ power, and it was his to command. But with this knowledge came the truth—the truth that filled him with both awe and terror. The Eternal Flame was dying, and it was up to him to either reignite it or watch the world fall into darkness. His blood—the blood of the draconic realm—was the key. The world around him shifted again, the vision fading as quickly as it had come. He was back in the cave, his hand still touching the altar, but now the power was almost unbearable. The Flame swirled around him, a storm of energy threatening to consume him whole. Riona’s voice pierced through the haze of power. “Kaelen! You have to fight it!” But Kaelen wasn’t sure what he was fighting anymore. The bond to the Flame was undeniable. The dragon’s words still echoed in his mind, and he knew, deep down, that he had been chosen. But what did that mean for him? For his future? For the people he loved? The figure in the shadows—this person who sought to claim the Flame for themselves—watched him, waiting for his decision. Kaelen could feel their eyes on him, the weight of their gaze pressing down on him like a physical force. “Don’t listen to it,” the figure hissed, their voice sharp as a knife. “You think you can control this power? You think you can save the world? You’ll only bring about its end.” Kaelen clenched his teeth, fighting against the overwhelming surge of energy threatening to take over. His mind was racing, but a part of him—something deep inside—understood. This wasn’t just about survival. It was about balance. The Flame needed a guardian, someone to restore it, someone who could control its power and use it for the good of the realm. And that someone was him. With a final, defiant breath, Kaelen stepped away from the altar, his body still crackling with energy. The Flame, though still burning brightly, seemed to acknowledge his decision. The chaotic storm of power within him began to settle, but the air was thick with tension. Kaelen’s grip on the Flame wasn’t just physical—it was a part of him, woven into his very soul. “I am the heir,” Kaelen said, his voice stronger than he had ever heard it before. “And I will not let this power destroy everything.” The figure recoiled, their expression twisting with rage. “You think you can stand against me? Against what is rightfully mine?” But Kaelen didn’t flinch. He had made his choice, and he would not back down. He would fight, not just for himself, but for the realm—the realm that was dying without the Flame, without balance. The figure stepped forward, their eyes glowing with fury. “Then you will fall, just like the dragons.” As the figure raised their hands, preparing to strike, Kaelen felt the power surge again, stronger than ever before. He closed his eyes, allowing the energy to flow through him, letting It guide him. For a brief moment, he saw Lyra’s face in his mind—her smile, her strength, her sacrifice. This is for her, he thought. For everyone who’s given everything so I could be here. The Eternal Flame, the heart of the dragons, was his now, and he would wield it. With a single, sharp motion, Kaelen thrust his hand toward the figure, sending a burst of blue fire that lit up the cave like a second sun. The force of it knocked the figure off their feet, sending them crashing against the cave wall. When the light faded, the figure was gone—vanished into the shadows. The cave was silent once again, save for the faint crackle of the Flame. Kaelen stood there, breathless, his body trembling with the aftermath of the power he had unleashed. He had chosen. And now, the real battle had begun.
