From rivals to lovers
Chapter 1 - The rival
Never let Lucas sterling beat her.
Unfortunately, lucashad made breaking that rule his favorite hobby.
“Congratulations, everyone,” Mrs. Angelina announced as she walked into the classroom. “The results are finally here.”
The classroom immediately became noisy.
Beatrix sat up straight.
She had spent weeks preparing for the academic competition, and she was certain she had done well.
Mrs. Angelina lifted the results sheet.
“In first place…”Beatrix held her breath.
“…Lucas sterling.”
The classroom erupted in applause.
Beatrix smile disappeared.
Across the room, Lucas turned toward her with the most irritatingly satisfied grin she had ever seen.
“Looks like someone needs to study harder,” he whispered.
Beatrix narrowed her eyes.
“Enjoy it while it lasts.”
Lucas laughed. “That's what you said last time.”
“And I'll keep saying it until I beat you.”
“Good luck.”Beatrix looked away before she said something she would regret.
She hated his confidence.
She hated his teasing.
Most of all, she hated the fact that he was actually good enough to back it up.
Mrs. Angelina raised her hand, silencing the class.
“There's one more announcement. The school is holding an inter-school literary competition next month. I've chosen two students to represent us.”
Beatrix immediately became interested.
“This is your chance to prove yourselves,” Mrs. Angelina continued. “The students representing our school will be…”
She paused.
“Beatrix sinclair.”
Beatrix smiled.
Then Mrs. Angelina added:
“And Lucas sterling.”
The smile vanished.
“No,” Beatrix said before she could stop herself.
Lucas looked equally shocked.
“You've got to be kidding.”
The class burst into laughter.
Mrs. Angelina frowned.
“You two are the highest-performing students in the class. You will work together.”
“Ma'am, I'd rather work alone,” Beatrix said.
“So would I,” Lucas added.
Mrs. Angelina folded her arms.
“Exactly why you need this assignment.Beatrix stared at Lucas .
Lucas stared back.
Neither of them smiled.
For once, they agreed on something.
This was going to be a disaster.
As the bell rang, Beatrix packed her books quickly.
Lucas walked past her desk.
“See you tomorrow, partner.”
She looked up.
“Don't call me that.”
He smiled.
“See you tomorrow, partner.”
Then he walked away.
Beatrix watched him leave, already planning how to survive the next few weeks.
She didn't know it yet, but being forced to work with Lucas sterling was about to change everything.
