Xander steers me into the cafeteria and the smell of food hits me. God! I want some, but unfortunately I already packed lunch.
My experience with cafeteria meals mostly ended with me in the restroom, retching embarrassingly or feeling weird all through the day. So, I backed off. There's no point in struggling to eat what's not edible when you can pack yours from home.
I'm nervous to meet his friends. I know I'll have to meet them too, but a part of me thinks they won't like me. If they don't like me, they'll make Xander stop showing me the strings and then I'll be back to being a stranger here.
A tall girl with legs to die for strutted towards us. She didn't look like she was dressed for school. She could have passed for a teacher if not that she looked young, like she was my mate.
"Hey" she greeted Xander and threw a playful punch at his shoulder. He winces like it hurts so much he's about to die then he turns to me.
"I leave all of my properties to you, Jane." Then he fakes a last breathe and we burst out laughing. The beautiful tall blonde looks confused. Her eyes rake my body and lingers on my brown boots. I knew I shouldn't have worn these.
"I love your shoes. Your outfit is...bold" I blink repeatedly, out of confusion and speechlessness.
"Uhm... Thanks" I reply and then Xander looks between us and clears his throat loudly. "Guess I have to do some introduction"
"Yep. Definitely" Hot blonde replies and tosses her hair over her shoulder and if it's not envy, what's this feeling? Her hair is beautiful. Her perfectly manicured fingers are beautiful. She.. she's beautiful. And I'm...well, you know it. Plain.
"Jane, meet Kylie. Kylie, here's Jane, she's new here. I've finally made friends from my class."
"Wait. You didn't have friends?" I ask and immediately slap myself for that. "Sorry. I didn't mean to..."
"I have friends. Just that, they're seniors. Kylie and the rest of the gang are graduating soon and they're all I've had here, so it's only perfect timing that you bumped into me and became my friend so I won't have to spend a whole year as a friendless loner."
Kylie laughs and hits his arm again. "You know you'd never be friendless" I think she likes him. The way she's hanging on to his every word and hitting him playfully makes it all the more obvious.
"So are we having lunch?" I ask, snapping them out of their little bubble. I don't know why I'm angry that he's paying attention to her and not me as we walk towards an empty table. Kylie also unpacks her lunch and I almost ask her why she's not getting lunch from school if it smells this delicious but I decide not to.
"Can I have some of that?" Xander says and takes my fork from me when I nod. He forks a load of pasta into his mouth and moans at how delicious it is. I keep staring at him then I realize one thing. He doesn't have a single bad boy vibe in him. He's nice and warm and charismatic not cold or standoffish like I'd imagined guys with studs in their faces.

After lunch, we don't see each other till the end of school. I wait by my locker hoping to see him or Kylie but I'm luckless. I head over to my truck and start the engine before pulling out of the driveway and right into another car. Gee! Perfect. Absofuckinglutely perfect!
I hop down immediately and come face to face with my new friend, Xander. I'm about to start apologizing when I see Kylie get out of the other side with a scowl on her face.
"What was that for?"
"It wasn't intentional" I reply, the same time Xander said it. She looks weirdly at Xander before her features relax back.
"I'm sorry. I'll fix... Oh my goodness" The car! It wasn't one of those you saw everyday or even once a month. It was one of those cars from the transformer, the kind of car you only see in movies. Xander drives this god?!
"I can't fix this. I won't lie and say it's okay. Even if you sold my car and all my belongings..."
"Chill out babe. You don't have to fix it. Kylie will go with her other friends. I'll find my way."
Kylie doesn't say anything anymore. She just picks her bag and leaves quietly. "Is she mad?" I ask, hoping she really wasn't mad at me because she seemed nice over lunch and even offered me sandwich.
"Nah. She just wanted a ride in my new baby" he replies
"It's... It's new?" I hold my hand over my mouth and start to sob. New? I feel so guilty. I was always a safe driver, I didn't mean to ruin our lives mom, forgive me but all of your savings for my college tuition is going to a car repair. And my stupid truck doesn't even look like it experienced anything. The vehicle's rugged and old too.
"I said chill out. I'll call Ben, he'll pick and fix whatever went wrong there and he'll deliver it before dad's back from France."
Figures. He's a rich kid. A spoilt and entitled brat. He had everything under control.
"You're giving me a ride home. Take that as you paying me back for the repair."
I'm so grateful I could almost kneel and hold his legs in gratitude but that'd be awkward so I let him in and follow his directions, driving him home.
