CHAPTER 5

EVE His words hit me like stones on my broken heart, each one resonating with the pain of the betrayal he had inflicted. I wanted to scream, cry, disappear and never have to face the cruel reality that awaited me. "Why, Adam?", I asked, my voice trembling with the pain I desperately tried to contain. "Why did you do this to me? Why did you destroy everything we had?" He looked at me, eyes filled with tears, mirroring my own. "I don't know.", he confessed, his voice weak and uncertain. "I was confused and lost. But I still love you, Eva. More than anything in this world. Please, give me another chance." His words were a distant echo in my ears, barely audible over the deafening roar of my own broken heart. I wanted to believe him; I wanted to believe that the love we shared could still prevail, but the trust I once had in him was destroyed forever. As I struggled to find the right words to respond, we heard Aurora's faint cry from the back seat, a painful reminder of the life I had to protect and preserve at all costs. "I can't anymore, Adam.", I murmured, tears freely flowing down my face now. "I can't keep pretending that everything's okay when it's all falling apart around me. I can't trust you anymore, not after what happened." Adam tried to approach, but I stepped back, keeping a safe distance between us. I couldn't allow him to hurt me again, and I couldn't allow him to deceive me with empty promises of love and regret. "I'm so sorry, Eva.", he whispered, his words heavy with sorrow and remorse. "I would do anything to fix things between us." But it was too late for regrets and too late for apologies. I knew what I needed to do. "I'm leaving, Adam.", I said, my voice firm despite the tremble in my hands. "I'll take Aurora and leave you. I can't stay here anymore; I can't be with someone who hurt me so deeply." Adam shouted my name as I walked away, his words lost in the cold night wind. But I didn't look back; I couldn't allow myself. I had to move forward. I had to find a fresh start for myself and my daughter. As I drove through the empty streets, tears continued to stream down my face, but this time they were no longer tears of sadness; they were tears of liberation. I was finally free from the weight of the past, free to start anew and find the happiness I deserved. As the city faded in the rearview mirror, I knew the road ahead would be difficult, full of challenges and uncertainties. But I was determined to face it with courage and hope, knowing that in the end, I would find the peace I had been searching for. And as Aurora slept peacefully in the back seat, I promised myself that I would do everything in my power to give her a life filled with love, security, and happiness. Chicago. Chicago was my new destination. I was destined to go there and start a new life away from the man I love, away from the billionaire who shattered my heart into a thousand pieces. I continued to drive down the road, lost in my thoughts, as the city lights faded behind me. The final destination was the airport, where I would board a flight to Chicago, where my family awaited me with open arms. Arriving at the airport, I parked the car and took Aurora out of her car seat, holding her tightly as we walked toward the terminal. Each step felt like a ton, as the weight of Adam's betrayal continued to weigh heavily on my shoulders. In the check-in counter line, I bought a ticket to Chicago, ignoring the curious look of the attendant as she asked if everything was okay. I nodded, forcing a weak smile, before moving away to find our boarding gate. Hours later, we finally boarded the plane, finding our seats in the quiet cabin. Aurora fell asleep in my arms, her angelic face bringing a welcome comfort amidst the emotional chaos consuming me. As the plane took off, I took my phone out of my bag, feeling the full weight of reality hitting me once again. With trembling fingers, I dialed the home number, hoping my mother would answer. The phone rang several times before it was finally picked up. My mother's familiar voice filled my ears, bringing a lump to my throat. "Mom.", I murmured, struggling to keep the tears at bay. "Eva? Sweetheart, what's wrong? Why are you crying?" My mother's words were like a soothing balm to my wounded soul, and the tears I had tried to contain began to flow freely. "Adam.", I started, my voice trembling with the pain I could no longer hide. "He... he cheated on me, mom. I caught him with another woman." There was a moment of silence on the other end of the line as my mother absorbed my words. Then, her gentle voice filled my ears again, full of concern and compassion. "Oh, darling.", she murmured, her voice choked with emotion. "I'm so sorry. This shouldn't have happened to you." My mother's words were like a comforting embrace, and I broke down even further, allowing myself to feel the magnitude of the pain I had kept buried inside me. "Mom, I don't know what to do.", I sobbed. "I can't stay with him anymore, but I also can't bear to be away from Aurora." My mother listened patiently as I poured out all my worries and fears, her words of comfort and support enveloping me like a warm blanket on a cold winter night. "Eva, my dear, you did the right thing by leaving.", my mother said gently. "Now it's time to take care of yourself and Aurora. We'll be here to help with whatever you need." "I'm going to Chicago; I'm going back home, mom." "You'll always be welcome here, darling. I'll be waiting for you." Her words were a balm to my wounded soul, and I felt a little stronger, knowing that I wasn't alone in this journey. "Thank you, mom.", I murmured, tears still streaming down my face. "I love you." "I love you too, darling.", my mother replied, her voice full of love and affection. "Everything will be okay. I promise." After hanging up the phone, I felt a slight sense of relief wash over me. I wasn't alone anymore; my family was by my side, ready to support me in any time of need. As the plane flew to Chicago, I held Aurora tightly in my arms, promising myself that I would do everything in my power to give her a life filled with love, security, and happiness. But I can only think of Adam, the love I feel for him, the kisses and touches, and the love he swore to have for me. I looked at my phone again, and a sigh escaped my lips as I saw his name on the screen of my phone. He was calling me, and for long seconds I just watched his name. My eyes were still wet with tears when I turned my head, watching the sky as the plane was flying. My finger pressed the green button, and I felt the tears wetting my face when I heard his voice again. "Eva, you don't need to say anything; just listen to me, please..." "I made a horrible mistake with our family, and I feel like you're going far away from me with our family, but I ask you to forgive me, my love..." "Forgive me, please. You can't take our daughter away; I won't be able to live without you two in my life. I'm begging..." "I won't take her away from you; you're her father, but I need some time away from you. Goodbye, Adam.", I whispered, ready to slide the call. "Where are you, Eve? Tell me where, and I'll be there now!" "I loved you more than anything, and you hurt me. I can't do this anymore. Goodbye, Adam.", I hung up the phone quickly, closed my eyes and cried again. I knew the billionaire I love wouldn't give up on us easily, but I needed some time. Chicago, I'm coming back...
