The Rest

978 Words

Kaelen POV And so I had one of the most comfortable rests I have had all my life. It was not even on a bed. No. I slept on my wife's chest. She wrapped her arms tight around me as I drifted off to sleep. She had tossed my jacket, loosened my tie, and removed my shirt. I felt very comfortable on top of her. I did not want to wake up. But the sun is rising. The light pours through the curtains. The events of last night – the shadow at the window, the open nursery – seem distant. Marco searched the grounds. Found nothing. No footprints. No sign of entry. Maybe it was the wind. Maybe it was nothing. I want to believe that. Naomi is still asleep. Her breathing is slow. Her hand rests on my back. Her heart beats under my ear. I do not move. I listen. Thump. Thump. Thump. Steady.
