Chapter 5: Secrets Unveiled

955 Words
Days turned into a monotonous routine within the grandiose castle walls. Each morning, I was meticulously dressed by my ladies-in-waiting, a lavish ritual that seemed to have no purpose other than to remind me of my impending marriage to the Alpha King, Leander. Emily, once so friendly, had become distant and refused to engage in conversation with me, leaving me with unanswered questions about my enigmatic suitor. Unable to shake my curiosity and frustration, I devised a plan. One evening, when the moon hung low in the sky, I sent my guards on a false errand, claiming to have a female emergency that required immediate assistance. It was a ruse, a desperate attempt to find answers about the man I was set to marry. As they hurriedly left to fulfill their fabricated mission, I tiptoed out of my room, clad only in my nightgown. With each step, fear gnawed at me, for I was defenseless without my family, without my clan, and without my wolf. I ventured through the silent, dimly lit corridors of the castle until I found myself standing before the library once more. This time, the door was slightly ajar, and the muffled sound of voices reached my ears. I hesitated, contemplating whether to press forward or continue my aimless wanderings. Just as I was about to move on, a high-pitched scream pierced the air, freezing me in my tracks. My instincts screamed at me to flee, to find someone to help, but another thud and what sounded like a growl propelled me into action. I pushed the door open and slipped inside, my hand trembling as I clutched a fireplace tool for protection. I cursed the absence of a full moon, which would have allowed me to call upon my inner wolf, but I was alone and defenseless. Another thud, followed by the woman's scream, made me gasp, and I mustered the courage to move closer. The once-darkened area of the library was now illuminated by a second fireplace, revealing a well-appointed office with a large mahogany desk. But it wasn't the furniture that startled me. It was what lay upon the desk. Leander was hunched over a beautiful woman, his lips on her neck as he kissed her. The woman's back faced me, and I felt rooted to the spot, unable to look away. My heart pounded in my chest, and my breath caught in my throat. When the woman moaned again, I started, and the fireplace tool slipped from my grasp, clattering to the ground. Leander's head snapped up, his dark eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that sent a shiver down my spine. He continued kissing the woman, never breaking eye contact with me. My shock and embarrassment reached their zenith, and I gasped audibly before turning and fleeing the library once more. The image of the Alpha King, locked in a passionate embrace with another woman, was seared into my mind, and I couldn't bear to witness any more. I left the library with a sinking feeling in my chest, my steps echoing in the empty corridor. For a moment, false hope fluttered within me, the naive belief that perhaps Leander would follow me, that he would have some explanation for what I had just witnessed. But there were no footsteps that echoed after mine, no sign that he had any intention of pursuing me. Home felt farther away than ever, and I was overwhelmed by a sense of longing. I should have not been surprised that Leander had mistresses, but I had assumed that he would, at the very least, engage with them in the privacy of his own chambers. The reality was far more disheartening. I walked aimlessly through the castle's labyrinthine corridors, my thoughts in turmoil. I had no knowledge of this place, and with each turn, I felt more and more lost. The dimly lit hallways seemed to stretch on endlessly, the stone walls and floors giving off a cold, foreboding atmosphere. As I passed closed doors, I hesitated to open them, fearing that I might intrude upon someone's slumber. I couldn't bear the thought of accidentally awakening a servant or guard who might report my unauthorized wandering to Leander. But just as I was about to turn around and retrace my steps, my curiosity got the better of me. There was one door that was slightly ajar, its darkness beckoning me like a siren's call. I pushed it open gently and stepped into the small, dimly lit room. The feeble light from the corridor filtered in with me, revealing a space that had clearly been neglected for some time. There was little to see – a small cot covered in dust and spiderwebs, and a sink in the corner that seemed unused. I wrinkled my nose at the musty odor that hung in the air. The cot seemed abandoned, like a forgotten relic of the past. I was about to leave when something caught my eye – a glimpse of brown leather beneath the moldy pillow. Curiosity piqued, I reached for it and pulled out a weathered, leather-bound book. Its cover bore the words, "The Journal of Magnolia," a name that sent a chill down my spine. Magnolia was the name of one of Leander's previous wives. My heart raced as I held the journal in my hands. What secrets might it hold? What could I learn about the women who had come before me and the man I was destined to marry? With trembling fingers, I opened the book and began to read the words of a woman who had once held the same position I did, a woman who had known Leander in a way I could only imagine.
